This is my daughter's favorite restaurant! I don't like sushi but ordered their rice and shrimp. Plenty of food served but I would have liked the shrimp larger than being so small that you couldn't even see them. Other than that, a pleasant lunch.

We used to come here regularly about ten years ago and thought a meal here would be good for old time's sake. Wrong. The two dishes we ordered were clumsily preparedand almost gross. My husband ordered Squid stir fry with vegetables and hot sauce. It came on top of a buried mound of rice and some rice noodles. Not only that, but there were mussels and shrimp in the dish. In this case it was fine, but some diners are allergic to shellfish. He would have preferred all squid. I ordered the H.O.T. Bento Box: Tempura thickly caked in batter, overly sweet chickenteriyaki, industrial seaweed salad, shumai, and gyozas. Portions are generous and prices are low. Therefore its appeal to students is understood. But for us, never again!

Delicious bowls of ramen with pork, chicken broth, kimchi, various spices; certainly enough for a meal. Kaiju also does very good chicken wings -- odd combination of cuisines. Service is very slow, & don't order the wine. Stay with beer or mixed drinks.
After many years working in Japan, Thailand, and East Asia, eating and learning about local cuisines, I know something about Asian food. Ichiban couldn't last a day in Japan or Thailand, even as cheap eats for students. The sushi is old, tasteless, and half the size of the regular fresher tastier sushi you can get at a local supermarket. We had to ask for miso soup because the waiter did not know it came with our meals. The soup was watery and tasteless, made without a hint of dashi or salt, the two essential ingredients that give miso soup its flavor. The tempura here is made with tasteless unseasoned batter and old inedible vegetables and bland daikon radish. The tiny tasteless shumai were also half the size of any I have had elsewhere. The sushi is served with artificially colored pink ginger and fake green wasabi, neither of which I would eat. These fake condiments and a restaurant's miso soup and tempura are good indicators of quality and culinary skills, neither of which are present at Ichiban. The decor is black furniture and floors with large garish prints of sumo wrestlers and Osaka castle with cherry blossoms. I would not eat here again, but fortunately real Asian food can be found in Amherst, just not at Ichiban.

I am a fan of Iya in South Hadley so I expected to like Iya Amherst. Unfortunately the waiter ignored us for almost 15 minutes and then was snooty and inattentive. We ordered ramen and the egg opened to a raw egg white interior. The broth was lukewarm and spiced with one tone. When we asked to have it heated more the egg was still closer to raw than cooked.I had nice wine but aside from that canât recommend this Iya location.
