Zhu features some really excellent dishes, all vegan, that even non-vegans can really enjoy. We tried a number of them: scallion pancake, ma po tofu, malaysian stew, eggplant and beans, singapore noodles, and their miso, and hot and sour soups. The eggplant beans dish was simply exquisite, and the malaysian stew was also very good. The scallion pancake was good, especially the relish on top added to the quality of the dish. The singapore noodles were also really well-prepared. On the whole, very flavorful and tasty dishes. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the service. The waitress seemed upset that she had to serve us, totally lackluster, and unenthusiastic about our order which was for a group of 5. She seemed totally uninterested in serving us. Another sore point that could easily be fixed: a using good tea in a pot instead of tea bags (though these were of good quality!) for individual cups.

This small East Arlington spot a block away from the Capitol Theater offers both a wide range of well-prepared standard Chinese dishes and the âhot potâ cook-it-at-the-table fare. In the several times weâve been there, we have sampled both. Weâve especially enjoyed the hot and sour soup, any of the Moo Shi dishes, and the Orange Flavored Beef. The quality of the ingredients for the hot pot is higher than other restaurants who offer this specialty. If the cooking liquid is flavorful, your meal will be, but if not, the result is almost tasteless. There are two other issues with the table hot pots. First. because the cooking bowl is very deep, it may be difficult to retrieve the individual items. Second, because the cooking liquid includes spices and flavorings, it can be difficult to differentiate the edible food from the seasonings. But definitely worth going to.

Had delivery from here twice this June, once from the Chinese menu and once from the Japanese (which is mostly limited to sushi and sushi go-withs). Both times the food was excellent, with interesting and subtle flavoring -- not bland sweet Chinese-American fastfood or boring supermarket sushi at all. The maki rolls are a highlight.

I had been thinking of trying their dumplings for years. I stopped in, early on a Sat. night and ordered the pork pan fried dumplings and some cold peanut noodles to go with them. The service is prompt and friendly, but the food was pretty bland. The sauce that came with the dumplings was tasteless. And the peanut sauce on the noodles was also quite unremarkable. Prices are very reasonable, but I doubt that I will return.

Two disclaimers before this tepid review. First, the Arlington location had been open only a week or so, which may mean the staff and kitchen are still working out the kinks. Second, we are not noodle restaurant aficionados, so our evaluation is based more on our experiences at other local Asian restaurants. That being said, we did not love our meals. We order pan-fried ravioli in every Asian restaurant that offers them. We enjoyed Home Tastesâ much less than almost anywhere else weâve had them, because the skins were very thick and the filling fairly bland. The quality of the meat in the beef casserole was terrible â gristly, fatty, and almost tasteless. Our other selection was chopped pork in fried bean sauce and shredded cucumber. The pork was actually ground, not chopped, and also almost tasteless. The noodles in both dishes were well cooked. We expected flavorful, subtle or otherwise, and we did not get it (and thatâs where our lack of noodle restaurants may impact the review). Regarding service, although the delivery of dishes was prompt, trying to get a waitressâ attention for something additional was almost impossible.
