Springfield is perhaps best known as the birthplace of basketball and home of the Basketball Hall of Fame. (The story goes that local physical education teacher James Naismith invented the sport to fill the gaps between football and baseball seasons.) But this historic town on the shores of the Connecticut River is famous for a few other reasons and definitely worth a quick jaunt or weekend away. Springfield was the birthplace and home of beloved children's author and illustrator, Theodore Geisel, Dr. Seuss. In fact, the Zoo in Forest Park, a sure hit with the kids, is said to be the inspiration for many of his wild and wacky tales. Wander through the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, at the Quadrangle, for a look at the Cat in the Hat and Yertle the Turtle cast in bronze. The city served as a major arsenal during the Revolutionary War, a role that is commemorated at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, which displays an enormous collection of small pistols. History buffs will also enjoy the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, a tribute to the ordinary people of the region who, during various periods in time, did extraordinary things.

We had a very good meal at the Texas Roadhouse. The salad was fresh and the rolls are bigger than the last time we were there. Always enjoy the cinnamon butter. The steaks were tender and flavorful. The staff were friendly and attentive as well. While the atmosphere is usually loud and hectic, this is what attracts some patrons.

MGM Springfield has raised the bar for fine dining in downtown Springfield.

First I will say that the bar has an excellent bourbon list with some reasonable prices and some very expensive pours. From there, dinner was very good. We started with oysters and the sushi roll and both were excellent. I had the scallops for dinner and they were also excellent. Service was also great. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was due to the extremely salty and over seasoned fries. Had they not been almost inedible, it would have been a great meal all around. The others at my table also very much enjoyed their steak and fish. Prices were in line with any other high end steak house.

Arrive hungry, sit at the bar, say hello to Janel, relax and enjoy consistently fast friendly service and reliably good food. I like their straightforward approach, serving satisfying freshly prepared, well seasoned, simply presented, good old meat and potatoes meals that won't break the budget. Janel makes everybody feel like a welcome regular and that makes this place worth returning to enjoy again and again.

LongHorn Steakhouse

We sat a the bar ordered a couple of drinks - Bartender - Dina, she was nice and very prompt. We ordered medium rare for both entries – Filet/Lobster tail and Ribeye with a side of asparagus. The ribeye was medium rare on half of it and well done. The manager brought out our dinners - he quickly left as you could see the ribeye was black on one end. We sent the steak back. He returned with a new steak. Cooked well but it was not a ribeye - they re-fired a NY Strip. I said - this is not a ribeye - he said "yes it is ... it's just from further down the loin". Well got news for the manager the "loin" is not part of the "Rib" - what an idiot. A Strip has hardly any fat and a Ribeye has fat marbling throughout. The Steamed Asparagus was covered in way too much seasoning - asparagus does not need tons of seasoning - a little butter and salt. The manager couldn't care less about us. They put the butter and sour cream in one small ramekin I asked for more sour cream - he said that I already had it - yeah - I wanted more - there was only enough to last for half of the potato. The manager made our experience terrible. We won't be back.
