Maryland, United States Food Guide: 10 Bar food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Baltimore

December 11, 2019 Jacquiline Delozier

Find out what Bar restaurants to try in Baltimore. Since the redevelopment of the Inner Harbor in the late 1970s, Baltimore has set the standard for urban renewal. While a good part of the city's action centers around the fun and festive Harbor area, where street entertainers, open-air concerts, fireworks and parades abound, the surrounding neighborhoods offer all sorts of interesting landmarks, unique shops and delicious restaurants. Wander around Fells Point, the oldest section of Baltimore, reminiscent of an old English village, complete with pubs and cobblestone streets. Take the kids to the aquarium and check out the imaginative creations at the American Visionary Art Museum. Or stop by the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum for an in-depth look at the Great Bambino's life. Baltimore is also renowned for its African-American heritage sites, plus festivals and cultural events that take place throughout the year. From historic places and harbor cruises to family friendly attractions and fabulous neighborhoods, Charm City is one of the top tourist destinations in the United States.

Upon entering The Abbey Burger Bistro, I was a little off-put by the abrasive service. And by abrasive, I mean we felt like we were a hindrance to the employee who "greeted" us, and our mere presence was doing them a disservice. Regardless, this place started a couple of steps behind a Rock Solid endorsement. After checking out their tasty beer menu, they started to climb a little out of the hole. The service beyond the initial interaction was friendly and accommodating, which helped climb a little further, but what about the food? The fried pickles and crab tots made strides towards recommending this place a Rock Solid option. The thin, crispy pickles and crab cheese smothered tots were the bomb if I do say so myself. Since this is a burger place, after all, we had to try a burger, or four...The burger trio made it easy to partake in multiple burger varieties, as well as overeat, but we also had to try one of their signature burgers, and what the heck, more tots! (We ate family style, so no judging) I enjoyed everything that laid in front of me and then some. I wasn't even that hungry! Anyhow, if you're interested in eating your weight in beer, burgers, and tots, GO HERE! And yes, I wrote burgers, with an "s."

Fast service, not formal or fancy, but the fish was excellent, both the fish of the day (mahi mahi) and the cod in the fish and chips. Tasty tartar sauce! Stunned by the low price.

We walked into Max’s and my husband wasn’t too sure we were in the right place. I looked at TripAdvisor to double check and we were. We ordered the Tots covered in pulled pork and cheese and the grilled chicken sandwich with crab and artichoke dip (I cant remember what either dish was called on the menu). The portions are HUGE, and the food was amazing! My husband and I split the 2 dishes and had lots of leftovers! The place is totally unassuming, but definitely worth a visit if you are in Fell’s Point!

Mama's on the Half Shell

In 2003, we opened Mama's on the Half Shell. Our opening day was the realization of five years of dreaming, discussing and collecting. As native "Baltimoreans," we felt Baltimore lacked a real seafood restaurant. Because of our love for the restaurant bus

Great happy hour. They crushed the crushes at happy hour prices. The standard shrimp evaporated as we ate them. I'll never clam up about the happy hour oysters. We snapped at the crab dip. Great place and will be back. Love the word usage, Steve! And the enthusiasm about how great your recent visit was with us at Mama's on the Half Shell. We could not be happier to read it, and cannot wait to see you again soon for more good times and great happy hour deals all around. Looking forward to it! Thanks again.

We visited Maisy's on our first visit to the Mt. Vernon area in February 2019. Our lunch then pleased us enough to return on this August trip for an early Saturday night dinner. Service was top-notch, although it was a slow weekend evening. Drink orders were quickly taken and delivered. I ordered the Maryland crab soup and, once again, it was lusciously wonderful! Spouse adores the crab cakes, not my personal favorite in the area. Overall, though, everything is well-prepared and fresh. Such a great spot for this area!

Made the couple block journey off the beaten path to try this restaurant and was pleased we did. Upon arrival for lunch we were the only ones there besides one guy at the bar. Worried us a bit but we went ahead. Small place with a quaint atmosphere.Server was friendly and quick. The crab cakes were delish and the pasta salad was a good side to have with. The only thing different had at our table was a meatball sub and my son said it was pretty tasty as well.Definitely make the stop!

Thanks to all the tripadvisor reviews we ended up going down to Baltimore for one night from Hershey, PA. Our quest was for the best crab cake and our mission was accomplished.Location is outside of Baltimore close to Morgan State in a little neighborhood corner bar. I love corner bars so it was right up my alley. Parking was hard to find - FYI.Now my wife and I lived in Delaware for a few years and would drive down to the Inner Harbor a few times a month. Love the Italian area and Fell's point. Have been eating Maryland Crabs and Crab Cakes for over 20 years. Used to go to Obrickys (??) before they closed down around 10 years ago, maybe more? Anyway, Koco's crab cakes are the best hand's down we have ever had. They are an 11 ounce softball size ball of 95% crab meat with 5% breaded filler to hold them together. Now they are expensive until you put into perspective:1 - they are huge and one crab cake is enough for two people. That said I would never share mine :)2- some things are worth and these are! My wife made a very good point when we were debating to order 6 to take home! She said you know you pay $25 for a lobster roll on a small hot dog bun and little lobster meat, so true. Plus we like Crab better then Lobster anyway. We were going to give two crab cakes to our neighbors across the street and two to the neighbors right next to use becuase we all have dinner/drinks at each others houses routinely. We ended up only saving 2 and when we had them over that week we just served the two as an appetizer. They could not believe how good they are.I will never go back to Baltimore again without a first stop to Koco's. In fact, I might look for a Marriott (my go to hotel chain) as close to Koco's as possible and go there both days and maybe go to the inner harbor :)
