Reviewed By tomnK5659RCThe Mardius is a time machine that took us back half a millennium to old Turkey, and we will never forget that memorable stay. Driving to the Mardius in the Old City of Mardin from the Mardin airport is like going about 600 years into the past to a time when people lived in houses of stone built into the mountainside overlooking a vast plain stretching across to Syria and the rest of the fertile crescent. Google directed us up an incredibly steep dirt road only to have it rejoin a paved road that we could have reached simply by following well paved roads. So ignore any Google direction to turn off into anything less than a paved two-lane road. But when we did get as far as our rented SUV could take us, we were greeted by a young hotel employee who directed us to park on the edge of a paved alley and follow him up a series of stone steps to the most opulent structure of Mardin's Old City. Today's Mardius was a labor of a love (and millions of dollars) by an old-line Mardin family seeking to restore and modernize a compound that had been the ancestral home to two dozen generations of ancestors. The upper two levels of the three-level compound affords panoramic views of the flat countryside to the south, as well as a partial view of some of a mosque and other structures built into the mountainside above to the north. We were lucky enough to get the central suite on the top third level. With our door open, and with the door of the salon open, we could lie in the king-size bed and gaze down at the lights of the towns dotting the plains. On our first night we also had a highly atmospheric light show courtesy of a thunderstorm, complete with marble-size hailstones. The Mardius's furnishings, fixtures and decor was kept faithful to the fashion of the 17th century while the rooms were electrified and plumbed to today's luxury standards. The result is a rather comfortable time-trip back about 700 years. The second level features a glass-enclosed dining hall that also affords a spectacular view as well as exquisite traditional dishes like those served to the family over the centuries. The Mardius's location at the south-central slope of the Old City affords a pleasant 10-minute, albeit strenuous, climb up stone steps and narrow stone-walled alleys through the local market to the main avenue lined with dozens of restaurants, cafes and shops. When we were there in late May the Old City was bustling with tourists and auto traffic, but our daughter (who had recommended the hotel) said it was quiet when she was there before the tourist season began.

All of the personnel are very helpful and try to maximize your happiness during the stay. The bed was comfortable and the room was spacious and clean. And then the staff: everyone - be it at the front desk, the dining area or your house keeping personnel are really fabulous, friendly and will always try to make your stay simply great. I stayed at this hotel in the "add-on addition" of the hotel which was clean and had a modern bathroom with plenty of hot water. There was Wi Fi, but I had to go outside for good reception. The amenities could use some improvement. There was only a soap dispenser at the sink & in the shower. No shampoo was provided and there was no drinking glasses in the room. Also,one day it rained and I asked if I could borrow an umbrella but they did not have one and istead pointed to a man that was selling umbrellas. The breakfast was adequate; cheeses, olives, fries, meats, rolls and fruit. I would probably stay at this hotel again because of its central location but the next time I would plan to bring my own toiletries This is just a suggestion, but perhaps the hotel could think about providing more amenities for their guests. All travelers love amenities!
