Shaded campsites close to attractions

Reviewed By mfsinmo

We tent camped for several days. Campsite was large, well-situated, and shaded by large trees. It was conveniently located to restroom. Restrooms somewhat muddy from rain and lacked hand dryers. Showers, available at a central location for $1.50 for 4 minutes, were adequate but small and lacked benches --still, happy to have them. Campground less than 2 miles from Visitor Center so good location for seeing the cave.

Fun times below the ground and above

Reviewed By Renea I

Our family spent two nights at the Houtchins Ferry camping area on the National Park grounds and capped our trip with the Historic Tour of Mammoth Cave. The camping area overlooked a pristine river and was a great set up for more primitive car camping. Each site had its own concrete picnic table and metal fire ring, however some of the campsites were laid out better for tents and hammocks than others. There was potable water available from a spigot and portapotties. There was no electricity or septic hookup, so not a place for RVs. But this was just what we were wanting. The port-o-potties were a bit dirty, but not too bad considering they’re in the middle of the woods. We did see a maintenance employee inspect them, although he really didn’t do much other than wipe down the seats and replace the toilet paper. The only real complaints we had about the camping area was that, like most sanctioned campgrounds, the campsites are pretty close to each other and not everyone there is going to be respectful of the noise they make. Also, there are a lot of walnut trees that were constantly dropping walnuts, and it was a little worrisome that a big walnut would drop on our heads or cars at any moment. The cave tour was great. The Historic Tour, led by Ranger Laurel, was exciting, informative and enjoyable. Her stories were fascinating and the sites she led us to were breathtaking. It was about 2 hours long and the hike through the cave was around two miles. It was fairly strenuous and a little slippery in places, but there were plenty of rest breaks and you can take your time maneuvering. If you have the chance, take it. We would do it again in a heartbeat.

Unfavorable sites for big rigs

Reviewed By 336jerryo

This is not big rig friendly! We have a 42 ft fifth wheel and the 50 amp full hookup sites were mostly located in a gravel parking area with no shade close to the highway. The amenities were not close by - a bit of a hike. Was very disappointed after seeing the shaded sites on their website.

Tent camping warning!!!!!!

Reviewed By C8488MFelizabethe

We decided to stay a night at the tent camp grounds so we could explore the caves. We set up camp and everything seemed great until.. we started find ticks EVERYWHERE!!! They were all over the kids and my husband and I. We ended up leaving the same night because we were getting Eatin alive! Also the green river fairy was closed so to get to the caves was a 45 minute drive. It was such a disappointment. Hopefully others do not make the same mistake!

5. Dennison Ferry Campground

Mammoth Cave National Park, KY

A small campground area.
