Near the southernmost tip of Peninsula de Nicoya, Mal Pais offers rocky coves, white sand beaches, waterfalls, rainforests, surfing, and relaxation near a remote fishing village and Cabo Blanco National Park. The prime attraction is surfing at beaches like Playa Mar Azul, Playa Santa Teresa, Playa Manzanillo, and Playa Carmen. Plus there is fishing, boating, snorkeling, diving, hiking, horseback riding, biking, and 4-wheel drive touring.
A 4-wheel drive vehicle comes in handy for navigating unpaved roads in this still mostly wild area, particularly during the rainy season. Though locals zip around on quad bikes and motorcycles transporting their surfboards. Allow the better part of a day driving from San Jose Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to Mal Pais. Budget extra time to board the car ferry from Puntarenas across the Golfo de Nicoya to Paquera on the Peninsula de Nicoya. Or take the short flight from San Jose to Tambor Airport (TMU), and be within an hour of Mal Pais.
Some Mal Pais beaches have little sand, and judging point break direction and swell size requires surfing acumen. A Mal Pais surf camp may be perfect for family members wanting to learn to read the surf better. Santa Teresa’s beaches have more white sand, and point breaks like Suck Rock are almost legendary among surfers flocking here when the seas around Playa Carmen get too rough. Playa Carmen has enough variety to accommodate all levels of surfers, but the swells can get too rough and too frequent to get out during the rainy season. A bit to the north, with waters calmed by a rock jetty, Playa Manzanillo is known for its annual sand castle competition.

Casa Chameleon is fantastuc. Our house was spacious and had great view to the ocean. The staff was simply amazing and the food served was top quality. Garden is amazing with really cute animals. If you go, i’d recommend renting a 4 wheel drive car as the road to the hotel is steep and bumpy

I called the reception to try to book a room, the lady (Curly hair probably Italian) couldn't make a sentence in either spanish or english, made me wait for a while probably 5 minutes and told me at the end that there was an available room. So, I head there and try to book it and She was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo stoned that couldn't even have even the minimun customer service to help me out, She tried to over charge me and didn't know how to use their booking system to tell me how much it was. There was another guy there (Jesus Christ look alike) He had to help me and at the end they ended up telling me that there were No rooms available. This is the worst customer service at a reception I have ever seen in Costa Rica The place looks nice but with this girl at the reception is going to keep loosing customer because She is way to busy smooking pot or whatever she was doing , acids maybe?

Feel the beat of the nature on one acre tropical gardens. The chant of colorful birds, the sound of the night wild-life and the constant waves of the Pacific Ocean. Let Ritmo Tropical be your host to make your holidays the best you ever had. Come enjoy Costa Rica with us!
Stayed here for few nights. The have few bungalows. In the Center of a nice garden is a pool. The furnishing is basic but enough. The location is central and luckily at the start of a not acceptable road/way (or whatever they try to call it). They main road is only a dusty, sandy and rocky way. Incredible and definitely not acceptable. But this hotel is like an oasis of calm, except if the big trucks passing the main road.

Terraced along a sun-kissed hillside and nestled just off the beach, Hotel Cielo del Mar or “Heaven by the Sea” is renowned in the Santa Tereasa area for its sweeping ocean views and spectacular natural setting. Formally Hotel Moana, Cielo del Mar has done more than just change it’s name, we have undergone renovations and enhancements to the services we proudly offer our guests. If you want a quiet and unique boutique hotel experience in the popular surf towns of Santa Teresa/Mal Pais – we believe you will find Cielo del Mar the perfect place to unwind and relax.
What can I say that hasn’t already been said. This is a really lovely place. Rooms are clean, well stocked with comfortable beds, nice towels, mini-fridge, coffee maker. They have perfect balconies on which to sit and enjoy the lush jungle surroundings. Moana is located just a mile from Santa Teresa and is much quieter than staying in the busy town. Breakfast is delicious and is served from a restaurant where the view is absolutely spectacular. The staff is out of this world. Led by the owner Jon, who is personable, available, and is just a genuinely good dude. Stephanie at reception took care of all needs, printed some Covid paperwork and booked me a transport to the airport. Zara, Diana, and Meli kept the room spotless and well-stocked. And William can help with anything you need, including fixing my bike for a ride around town. I highly recommend staying with this wonderful family-like team. Did I mention there is nature and animals abound?

Vista de Olas is a refined hotel in Mal Pais perched on top of a peaceful hill. From this vantage point our guests are treated to sweeping views of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa and watch the most memorable sunsets. The hotel offers 7 sumptuous, secluded deluxe villas each with ocean view, AC, open-sky bathroom, and private porch. Hotel amenities include free speed Internet in public areas, a luxurious infinity pool and jacuzzi, Swim up bar, pool lounge, free private parking. Vista de Olas also has two Restaurants. One with International Cuisine Called Sunset Lounge open for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner, then a Japanese restaurant Called Katsumi open for Dinner.
It's such a shame that such a lovely location can be ruined by terrible service. One of the members of our party is from Asian descent, they ordered food that never arrived. When he asked them what had happened to it, they had never processed the order and when he questioned this, the older blonde woman (we think she was the owner) launched into a tirade including the line "Do. You. Not. Speak. English?? KONNICHIWA??!!" (Japanese for hello in case you didn't know) On the other hand, maybe he was lucky not to get the food given my carbonara was (in the nicest possible way) complete and utter garbage. Nice view though.

Indigo Yoga Surf Resort is a boutique hotel in Mal Pais, on the southern-most tip of the Nicoya peninsula. Just 2 kilometers from the Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve and steps away from the Pacific Ocean, it provides everything a person seeking relaxation and comfort needs:our eleven spacious rooms and one fully-equipped villa combine warm colors and local materials with a modern design. They are located in a tropical garden, which iguanas, squirrels and many birds call their home. We also offer a fine-dining restaurant, a coffee shop, a pool lounge area, as well as our own spa and yoga deck.
I stayed at Indigo in February 2022. The room was very spatious and I really liked the bathroom that was half open and you could shower in the open air. The overall vibe was very quite because it is a yoga resort and there was a summit. The has the feel that you are withinin the jungle. it is not very close located to markets or restaurants, needed to walk 15 minutes to Malpais or 30 minutes to Playa Carmen so it is best to rent an ATV or car or a bicycle. The best thing about this hotel was Stephanie, the receptionist, she was almost always there, with a great smile on her face, helping to accomodate all my needs and requests effortlessly. Stephanie, you are amazing, I wish all the best to you!

Oasis is a cozy, friendly, family-owned hotel and restaurant in Mal Pais (or Malpais) on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is located just a mile away from the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, and steps away from the Pacific Ocean.Costa Rica’s famous Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa beaches are a five minutes walk away. Both beaches are considered some of the best surf spots in all Costa Rica.
Easy walking distance from the heart of Santa Teresa with its shops and restaurants, and a 5-minute stroll from the beach, this was an excellent location for our home base. It got so much better when we realized that the outdoor kitchen on our balcony was super functional for morning coffee, and even had a blender for smoothies! Cecilio was helpful at the front desk, and the recently upgraded Wi-Fi worked well. The freshwater pool was absolutely lovely for a getaway from the hot afternoon heat. We would definitely go back again!
