While staying in Hallowell, we ate here several times. The food is great, the prices reasonable and the folks who run it are friendly. I will go out of my way to stop here for lunch, we like it so much!

Texas Roadhouse is a steak restaurant providing legendary food with legendary service. Texas Roadhouse specializes in hand-cut steaks, fresh-baked bread, fall-off-the-bone-ribs, and made-from-scratch sides. We also serve ice cold beer and legendary margar
Like Road House as a rule but what we've discovered at all the Road House we've dined in, they chi chinged us to death. Once our bill was $20 over the price of our meals with taxes. Here comes the Chi Ching.......they charge an extra $1.99 here & there for a topping, a $1.00 extra for drinks on the rocks.etc. So be careful when they ask you if you'd like something added to the dish there's a chi ching to go with it. One waiter was bragging to us how he was their best sales person, this is the one that we spent an extra $20 buckaroonies. Beware, yes means a smaller wallet. I've never had a restaurant charge us extra for every little thing but last night the ice was an extra $1.00, come on...............we decided before we went to make sure not to say yes to any questions the wait staff asked so our bill stayed the same but the ice got us last night. Some don't care but I do........most places tell you there's an extra charge for add ons.....

We had avoided the old location due to the high level of noise, despite its generally good food. The new location is somewhat better for noise upstairs--insist on seating there when making a reservation--while the first floor remains noisy with patrons and live music that really isn't necessary. The food was generally good, and a pleasant change from the pub food in this area, but attention to detail is a must. Service was adequate and pleasant. One of the bus staff has a booming voice that is deafening, and when asked to lower the volume, he said that "this is just the way I speak." Slates strives to be a bistro with a broad menu with locally sourced food. Our plates were generally good, but all lacked attention to the detail of plating. My steak au poivre was prepared perfectly and was tender, however, it was drowned in a good sauce that flooded the vegetable dishes; ¼ of the sauce would have been sufficient. The vegetables nonetheless were nicely prepared. A stuffed fish dish was served with stuffing cold and mushy, and suffered from similar problems of details. A dinner burrito was just OK. The desert was super rich double chocolate that we shared and thoroughly enjoyed. One could say, "This is Central Maine where everything is relaxed," including food preparation and presentation. Could but shouldn't. Slates could be a far better dining experience with attention to detail, beginning the kitchen. Strong in its favour is dining where the meals are "real" meals with a main and sides, as well as first course and deserts, instead of annoying trendy small plates. We will try again.

I visited the Maine House last week while traveling through the area. The place was clean with a nice vibe and great service. The cocktail menu offers unique concoctions with excellent presentation. I had two cocktails and they were both excellent. Apparently they have live entertainment but I was there before this began. Highly recommended.

Was formerly the Bond Brook Pancake House, Mt Vernon Ave, Augusta, ME. Owners had an opportunity to move into a restored, historic building in the heart of the downtown business district. Even managed to preserve a stained-glass storefront-wide window adv
The setting is loaded with classic blue-collar New England History. Located right by the river and in a downtown setting, the parking is limited so look for the parking around back. The service is brisk, professional and somewhat indicative of Maine's surly stand-offish style but it is slightly warmed up here because it is clearly a place for regulars. The Corned Beef hash is seared nicely but bland, the toast is outstanding and so are the breakfast sandwiches which have a homey quality being made with sliced sausage links instead of patties. With all of the skill and experience they have, they should add a bloody Mary or Mimosa for the weekend and think about reaching outside the box with a shakshouka or scotch egg.

Indoor and Outdoor Seating on two levels overlooking the Kennebec River in Historic Downtown Hallowell. Casual Dining with a full menu and Daily Specials. Full Bar. Function Rooms Available.
I met friends for a late lunch and since it was a beautiful day, we sat out on the deck overlooking the river. Lovely! We shared the grilled shrimp cocktail kebabs with 3 dipping sauces (cocktail sauce, spicy Thai, and garlic aioli). Very tasty! I ordered the crab cakes with green goddess sauce ($14.99). The two large delicious crab cakes came with a salad. Great cocktails, also, albeit a bit on the pricey side. Friendly service! We'll be back!

Great beer selection, great food. But....and I can't stress this enough.....Hallowell, Maine is as close to being Derry, Maine as any town. It looks so much like the town in both movies and for goodness sake - The Quarry? Tap room? There's even a quarry. I was there in July and the only things missing were a giant statue of Paul Bunyan and a pesky clown. Loved this bar and grill. Great warm decor and creative use of old beer kegs in the men's room ; )

Long before I visited this area I enjoyed seeing my friend's Facebook posts about this quaint local establishment. A few days ago we reconnected for a delicious Sunday breakfast here. My friend enjoyed her eggs benedict while I gleefully devoured the home-baked French toast with a generous raspberry compote with a side of bacon. Service was rather slow on this busy Sunday, yet always friendly. Slate's has a full bar which neither of us was ready to take advantage of this particular morning, yet it's nice to know it's there. If you want to truly experience this funky little town that is chartered as a "city," experience Slate's.
