The Boston Butt is Indiaâs 1st Smokery, Charcuterie & Bar. We are influenced by Texan and American Smokeries which are the best in the world. We also specialise in pre-prohibition era and signature cocktails which are made with the help of special ingredi
Was a nice Saturday evening on which I hoped to have a good meal and drinks with my wife at the Boston Butt. We did everything right; made reservations for 830pm, and turned up on time. The restaurant was reasonably empty, and after checking for whether we had reservations, we were seated. The first words that our hostess says to us is âI have given you a table, but we need the table back within an hour and a halfâ. Not âgood eveningâ, not âwelcomeâ, not âas a person in the hospitality business, I hope you have a wonderful evening with your wifeâ, but a statement that exuded a sense of generosity on her part to grant us a table, with a threat that it needed to be vacated at a said time. I politely asked to speak with her supervisor, who told me that âall restaurants have a seating policy, and thatâs just the way it isâ. When I explained to him that a) this needs to be mentioned at the time of reservation, and b) such a threat could wait at least till a patron settles in, I was made to feel that I was being unreasonable. Finally, his supervisor seemed to realize that it was possibly not the best approach, and apologized. By then, my evening was no longer the pleasant one I had anticipated it to be, and we walked out, and will never return. The Boston Butt used to operate in much bigger premises at Kala Ghoda, and one would have imagined that not being able to succeed, and having to move in to a new smaller space would have taught them a lesson in being nice to customers. Unfortunately, we live in a Mumbai where restaurants like these continue to believe that being perceived as being busy and being a place where reservations are difficult to get is way more important than truly being busy (this is evident from the number of vacant tables that you will see around in a small space). I wish them good luck.
