The Museumsgaststaette restaurant is found in an attractive old building in the main square of Zellerfeld; the interior is cosy and divided into smoking and non-smoking rooms (there was certainly no sign of anyone smoking in the non-smoking area during any of our four meals!). The restaurant in clearly popular with both locals and tourists, generating a friendly and buzzing atmosphere. Cuisine is described as 'German' and 'Croatian', but the menu is dominated by traditional German choices.Front of house is run solely and charmingly by one waiter who dashes around making sure no table is neglected. Each main meal (prices from around 8 euros) includes a help yourself serving of the impressive salad buffet (German Rohkost variations, selection of beans and dressings), along with complimentary home-made bruschetta. The meals themselves are very generously portioned- the 'Hirtenteller' includes pork cutlet, a couple of Croatian pork concoctions, liver and feta cheese, along with home-made tzaziki and a fiery tomato salsa. For the less hungry, a range of main course salads (8 euros) or fresh fish (from 9 to 15 euros) are available, along with venison and wild boar (11,50-12,50). Each meal comes with an enormous helping of some variety of potatoes; however the waiter was very accommodating when we asked for substitutions. Overall cost of a meal for two is exceptionally reasonable; we paid around 25-30 euros for main meals and drinks (including a delicious 'lieblich' Croatian red wine). The food is not fantastically complicated, but is freshly prepared using good quality ingredients. An excellent choice when eating out in Zellerfeld.

Tuesday seems to be restaurant owners Sunday in the Harz region. Most restaurants were closed. So we ended up in Zum Kachelofen which actually is in Hahnenklee. From the outside the restaurant looks quite nice, as well as from the inside, cosy wood everywhere. The waitress was attentive and we enjoyed her service. The price for half a liter of beer was stiff with 3,95â¬.Having been told by the waitress that the Schnitzel is frozen, we went for something else and ordered a steak â which was huge and not too bad â and a Hirtenpfanne, shepards pan. This is the dish that defined the poor rating I give this place. The Hirtenpfanne is a fried meatball on vegetables, potato, peppers, onions. The vegetables, especially the peppers, were ok. Nothing to kill for but ok. The shepard himself must have been a pretty old chap. The meatball was dry and of age. Nothing to be recommended. So one dish (steak) was ok, the Schnitzel is pre-processed and my Hirtenpfanne was absolutely not to my expectation. I very much regret that this experience nurtured my prejudices about Harz hospitality.

In a small town like Buntenbock, you cannot believe that restaurants can exist. But then again, here's Michael. The owner is a great cook, with tons of experience in bio and slow food! We had a great evening, lovely food and drinks! Dont go to big cities, discover local Harz food!

We have just returned from five days in Hanenklee and found this place by chance first for just coffee then for some Goulash and finally a full meal on Christmas night. On every occasion the service was good and the meals were excellent and well priced. I thoroughly recommend it and would return again.

..Good service..good price...good food. My boss and I were pleased with their service and is so easy to locate along the city center.

More often than not, croatian restaurants tend to have a rather "rustic" interior, as if that's what people expect from them. The Ratskeller is a nice and stylish exception, the decor is just as tasteful as the food. Service is friendly, attentive and personal without being too much around ;)

We went with friends. English restaurants in general could learn a lot from such as this one. Very clean, tidy and comfortable with charming decoration in the local vernacular and very good mood-lighting. Relatively inexpensive.Staff were polite, welcoming and efficient. The dishes offered tended toward the (very) large and were plainly cooked. I chose a half-kilo schnitzel simply because I have never had one this big before and it was to be an experience. The resaurant's reputation is built on big portions. Served with chips and a token salad It was OK. No more, no less.Looking back on my previous reviews I note that I normally only mention outstanding establishments. Outstandingly good and outstandingly bad. This is my first review of an establishment that I found to be average. I review it mainly because of the ambiance . Nice venue - average food. (To me, average doesn't mean bad. It means : average!) A very pleasant place to dine with friends but not exactly fine-dining.

This restaurant has a gorgeous setting, with a nice interior and a lovely quiet terrace. Imaginative menu, with local trout (but not available that night, in spite of being advertised on the day's special) and venison. But it was all very disappointing : slow service (only one young friendly man, but definitely not in a hurry), and the wild boar medaillons or mini-steaks were dreadfully overcooked. What a pity. To finish on a positive note: very good organic house wine directly sourced from Weingut Hermann und Bianca Schneider from Landau (Pfalz).
