Although it's only a 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches clustered around Castro on the island's east coast have UNESCO World Heritage status, and traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. We stumbled upon this place as we were walking around Castro looking for a good and affordable menú to eat for lunch. We immediately liked it because of its ambiance â colorful, good music and full of artisan wooden carved furniture and shelving. The food matched the atmosphere, as it reflected the local flavor by using fresh and indigenous ingredients, and adding a neuvo twist to the dishes making them unique and fun to eat. The bread that was served as a starter was full of whole grains and nuts, the perfect combo with butter. Our starters (salpicón de mariscos and seviche de cochayuya) were both served cold and packed full of fresh onion and herb flavors. The main dishes (asada de vacuno and luche con sesamo) were each served with three boiled potatoes, making them filling but not huge portions. The dessert included in the menú was simple slices of fresh pineapple with a cinnamon/cayenne mixture. The service was friendly and prompt. Overall, we highly recommend 43 Blanco Encalada for an affordable and deliciously fun lunch experience.
We were desperate for a proper coffee after 10 days of Nescafé and came across this cafe on our tour of the wooden churches. It was closed for a private kidsâ birthday party, but the owner asked the mum in charge if we could come in and she said OK. He has a real coffee machine and we enjoyed americanos with a little milk in the side. There were nice-looking tarts and the speciality is pancakes. There is Wi-fi and very clean toilets. A real gem in Chiloe!

This cafe is like Paris in the middle of the Palifitos in Castro. It offered a free breakfast to people in the Palifito next door. Although it was only a continental style breakfast it was more than adequate and done with style and flair. The owner Francisco is generous and kind and makes cakes to die for. Worth dropping in here for a great cup of coffee.

Sometimes life brings you amazing experiences completely by accident. This perfect palafito pizza place was one of those memorable gems. The pizza menu changes so the ingredients were fresh and seasonable, the interior was beautifully designed with a great view (the bar is classic boat hull!) the host was very pleasant and spoke excellent english, the wine generous, and Oh the pizza! Absolutely delicious - a place I would frequent if it were back home in New York, for both the pizza and the stylish surrounds. I donât normally eat all my crust but I didnât have a choice here, so flavorful. Best pizza in Chiloe with the best atmosphere too. Gracias!!

Cafe del Lago Huillinco is open only in summer time, wich is january, february and march.
We stopped on the way from Castro to the Parque Nacional. A very nice location along the lake where they prepare an excellent capucino with delicious cakes. Aldo they prepared very tasty sandwiches we took along to eat during our walk in the national park. The interior is nicely decorated and it is really worthwhile a stop. You need to pay in cash.

A lovely place to stop for a snack and the view. It was also a relief to find such a clean place after the rather grubby outskirts of Ancud. We also had a great welcome there.

We visited Chiloé for the day and tried to make the best of our time there. Being low season, there weren't many places open along the route to stop by while visiting the island, which forced us to skip lunch. We were beyond hungry when we returned to Ancud. Using Tripadvisor, we managed to get to this tiny place. It was time for taking ONCE, so we ordered some SELLADITOS. All of them were great but the one with salmon was fantastic. After an hour and a half, it was time for SUSHI. The owner makes the rolls himself. They were perfect: fresh, a good size, and some of the best I've eaten since being in Chile. The atmosphere is so nice with blues and old rock and rolls playing in the background to seal a fantastic meal.Dear Majo, it's a great pleasure for all of us read a review like this and give us the most powerfull fuel to get better day after day, thanks a lot and we hope that you come back again.
