The Cardenal Hotel is a quiet place, comfortable and full of peace together with nature. ¡I love this place!... I can walk or cycle along the river, breathe fresh air. Everything is near like banks, shopping centers, market, restaurants, parks, mountains and rivers. ¡Awesome!
I was in Loja to visit my son. I stayed at Hotel El Cardinal for 4 nights. As noted by earlier comments, it is not convenient to the city center. It is located on a dirt street about midway between the center and the university. There are no restaurants nearby. Remind, the owner, was always available to call a taxi. About $2 to the city center. There is a nice riverside park very nearby with a great walking path that is approximately 5k. The owner Remi is very nice. The room was large but very sparcely furnished. No bedside lamps or tables. I asked that a lamp be brought into the room so I could read. The lobby area is kept dark but that may be the result of very few guest due to the pandemic. In order to leave or return, there is a locked gate and locked door that someone needs to open for you. It was never a problem, but no key is provided. All in all, it was fine for the price.

The location is nice and the staff is kind. Our window overlooked Sucre and it was VERY loud at night. The WiFi was spotty and didn’t work at all in the room, but worked in common areas. No telephone in the room, which is frustrating when you run out of toilet paper. TV is mostly static. The hotel is clean and that’s about it. Breakfast was ok, nothing special. Wish the coffee wasn’t instant. Didn’t really feel like I got my money’s worth. I’ve slept in similar quality hotels in Ecuador for cheaper.

Stayed here two nights as we were waiting for a retreat. Slept really well in a big comfortable bed for only 10$ a night. Small but clean room with a nice bathroom. Close to the old (historic?) city centre with restaurants and cafés. Would recommend anyone who wants a cheap stay for a couple of nights.

This is a good, clean cheap place to spend the night. We live in Vilcabamba, and when we have an early appointment this is our place. Service was OK, staff is friendly, and we appreciate the parking garage.

Hotel San Sebastian.
I booked this room in advance and then confirmed about 3 hours before arrival. I received a confirmation email 2 hours before arrival. When I arrived, my wife and I had no room. We were not the only ones. The manager told us there were no other hotels nearby except one. That, we found out the next morning, is a lie. There are several within a two minute walk. He said he could get us a room at his other hotel but we would have to pay before he would take us there. It turns out he did not have any affiliation with the other hotel and he charged $25 over the normal rate. Beware. I ended up spending a week in Loja and realized that the San Sebastian is far more expensive than other hotels of similar quality. We found a comparable hotel for $40 per night a few blocks away (Prado). We were very happy there.

Comfortable rooms, luxuriously furnished, hot water service, cable TV, private bathroom, safety deposit box in each room.Suggestive panoramic restaurant with national and international dishes.Reception hall.Business Center.Room Service.Laundry (washing in water and dry).Telephone service.Internet access.Parking for guests at no additional cost.
The staff at the hotel overcame the only obstacle for us by turning to the Google translation app for help in getting us a taxi tour and a taxi to our ultimate destination of Vilcambamba. The hotel is centrally located but not in the Centro Historico but very close. Rooms were clean and the breakfast was't great but more than adequate.

We had a long and fairly nerve wracking bus ride to Loja and arrived around 11 pm. We saw the lights of the hotel and it looked very nice. So at $60/night we were glad to have found it within walking distance from the bus terminal. We asked for a king bed and when we arrived at the room, were given a full size. Too tired to care, we got ready for bed. The bed was so so extremely hard. Please be sure to check the bed to see if you can handle it before you accept your room. Other observations..the room was very clean, but also small. There was no window to outside, but instead a window to the hallway. If you are claustrophobic, that could be an issue. Unlike other reviewers, we did not have hot water in the morning. Barely lukewarm. We decided to just get up and leave after trying the breakfast. Breakfast was interesting. Wonderful juices hat seemed fresh squeezed. Eggs were good as was the bread, butter and jam. It also included this thing that reminded me of a tamale but extremely dry. See photo. The breakfast service of the waiter was very good. We were the only ones having breakfast. Actually, we did not see any other guests at all. Very strange. Would we come back? Absolutely not. The sleepless night on the hard bed itself was enough to keep that from happening. Instead, we would probably try one of the hostages outside the bus station and see if it were any better for our needs.
