This coffee house/cafe is a great spot! It's worth the trip into the downtown area from the interstate -- only an extra five minutes of driving and it is soooo worth it. Expansive coffee drink menu, divine bakery (including gluten free offerings!), lovely salads, quiche,...MoreSo kind of you to review us! Thank you. Glad that you enjoy.

We live about 10 to 15 minutes away from Lake Mills and make it a point to stop here a few times every summer. Sadly, we don’t get here more often, as it’s not in a direction that we normally travel, otherwise we’d be here much more!
The sandwiches are fantastic! The bread is always fresh, and there are good amounts of all the ingredients. They’re always made when you order, so it takes a bit longer, but the wait is worth it. Each sandwich comes with it’s own special set of toppings, as well as some standard toppings, so be sure to read the menu description carefully to make sure you order it how you want it. Omissions and additions have never been a problem for us, even for my sometimes picky-eater kids.
The ice cream is absolutely delicious! They have around 15 to 20 different flavors (rough estimate), and we have yet to find one that isn’t great! My favorite is the Fat Elvis, and last night I converted my oldest daughter to that flavor, as well! My wife loves the Birthday Cake flavor, and my younger daughter can’t get enough of the Blue Moon! Our two year old boy will eat anything, so long as it’s ice cream.
We’ve never had the pizza, but, having working in a pizza restaurant for nearly 10 years when I was younger, it certainly looks good and like they’re know what they’re doing.
As some other reviewers have noted, the service is a little slow at times, but while that’s the case, I’ve never seen that to be for any reason other than they’re busy. The staff is always friendly and busy, working as quickly as they can to get the food prepared and out to the customers. To me, the wait is worth it.
They have a decently sized dining area, with high and low, "timber" style tables, and some nice nature themed murals on the walls. They also do a good amount of carry-out business. They also have kids sizes of sandwiches and ice cream.

We stopped for dinner on a Thursday night. I had an excellent Mushroom-Swiss burger. The burger was very flavorful. My husband had the brisket dinner. He meant to order the brisket sandwich, but not realizing that there was both a brisket sandwich and entree (he didn't look any farther on the menu), he didn't say the word sandwich when ordering. He said it was very good and he may have to go back soon to compare the sandwich. The draft beer selection was interesting - breweries we were familiar with, but not necessarily the most popular beers from those breweries. Service was friendly. Our server kept our water glasses full, which is always a plus. The restaurant is in an old historic building and is very attractive. We chose to sit at a high top table in the bar rather than in the dining room. Our only complaint is that the stools don't have backs, so they weren't very comfortable.

I have this a 5 because the pizza was amazing. This place has old beer stuff on wall. The pizza are rectangular and fire oven. So good!!! Waitress was so good and friendly. When we come back to ride bikes next year-we will be back.

We made our 1st visit to James J today and it was delightful! We were offered tastings so our first sample was the chocolate covered potato chips. Oh my goodness! Sweet and salty all in one bite. Delish! The clerk took plenty of time to explain the chocolates, the history of the recWe shall ripes, and much, much more. We left with about $35.00 worth of deliciousness to enjoy later! Great place. We shall return!

We drove past Doyle's about a hundred times before we were smart enough to stop for lunch one day. We shouldn't have waited, and we will visit again. Great atmosphere, color, ambiance, camaraderie--and pretty good sandwiches to boot. Obviously Doyle's is a seasonal opportunity, so go while it is warm out. No winter dining. We will visit again, or maybe I already said that.

I ate here due to the #1 status in Trip advisor. Service was poor, but the restaurant was quite busy. The chips were quite good. However the burrito was almost inedible due to the crazy high salt content. I would have sent it back but I was never asked how it was. Terrible food, a disgrace to Mexican food.

When traveling between Milwaukee and Madison WI, I try to stop here for breakfast. Two persons can get a hearty breakfast of pancakes, eggs, hash browns, toast, and decent coffee for around $20 plus tip. It has a a true small-town feel with many historic properties. The people are exceptionally nice and very forgiving if you do something awkward like spill your glass of water.

My wife asked me where I'd like to go for lunch on my birthday, and having heard about Hering's from a friend we decided to give it a try. We arrived about 1 p.m. and all the out side tables were taken so we waited inside with a vodka Mt.Dew. We ordered our food and it arrived in no time, both the bartender and waitress were very polite and were right their to serve us. Shortly after our food arrived a table opened up outside and we took it. Sitting by the water on a sunny Labor Day was very nice. Lots of people using the lake one more time before cooler weather sets in.
I had the smothered chicken w/chips and my wife had a cheeseburger and fries. Both were done perfectly and we were full when finished.
Fair prices, GREAT service and wonderful views will bring us back again next summer.
Starting Labor Day they are only open weekends till next summer.
