On the south side of the Alps, Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy. Since the climate is mild year-round, the area is filled with Mediterranean vegetation and exotic plants. Lake Maggiore was featured in Ernest Hemingway's infamous novel, A Farewell to Arms, when the protagonist and his lover must row across the lake in order to escape the Italian Carabinieri (think police in military uniforms). Here's hoping you won't have any run-ins of that nature.

We found villa pizzini walking around mottarone and it was immediatly love at first sight for this stunning building from 1880. The villa was initially built by a wealthy family and used as hunting mansion until, in 1952, it was donated to the church by the mayor of stresa, donna maura, with the intention for it to be used as a summer holiday house for children. The mayor also named the villa after his little nephew edoardo pizzini who tracically died at the age of 8. Since we first saw it we decided to convert this villa, surrounded by hundreds of beech trees in a intimate and cosy restaurant and to make the 5 rooms available to our guests who wanted to fully experience the beauty of this mountain and our food. It was then that we decided to move up on mottarone, leaving london, uk, after many many years spent there. When we first found the villa though, it was abandoned and so was the wood around it, although, we seen the potential and we decided to start the the renovating process who lasted 9 months. The result is what you see today, a restaurant room, small by choice, so we can treat our guests in the best way, 5 rooms, dedicated to those who wanted to enjoy not only the homemade food, but also the mountains, the lake, the islands, the sunrise and sunsets that this beautiful mountain has to offer.
I've read several of the other reviews and am bewildered as to their generosity. Then I looked at the dates. I can only conclude that Villa Pizzini has got a bit above itself and thinks a tiny bit of deliciousness on a plate constitutes a meal. It doesn't. And it especially doesn't when you've walked up the mountain to get there. We stayed overnight as part of a walking tour from Lake Maggiore to Orta. This was supposed to be the highlight as regards the hotels. It fell well short on several scores: room was chilly as the heating was turned off after their lunch guests had departed and didn't go on again until the evening. We went out for more walking to keep warm. Second: the bed was tight against the wall so my husband had to climb over me to get in and out. Funny at 24; not so much at 74. Third: my towel stank of the damp. I should have complained but only discovered this while in the shower and just used my husband's instead from then on (another couple said their whole room smelt horribly damp). Finally, and most important, the restaurant: walkers are hungry. They are also a sociable lot so putting three couples as far apart as possible was not a good start. Liz from Glasgow soon dealt with that and we ended up in a row. Could we have one long table? No - because my hubby wanted the tasting menu, Liz was vegetarian and the others wanted à la carte. So a space between each table was insisted upon and if I wanted to sit with my husband I had to have the same tasting menu. Style over substance is the only way to describe it. Tiny tiny tiny portions. First course, salad leaves, to be eaten with your fingers to fully appreciate the different flavours. I haven't recorded in my diary the exact content of every dish but it's safe to say it was an expensive and very disappointing "meal". One thing I did record is that saffron risotto with liquorice is disgusting! The rest tasted fine but was so tiny it was lost in the plate. Our fellow walkers were shocked - not that they got much more on their own plates. Being hungry, my husband had ordered the cheese course (extra of course). Teensy weensy again - and no choice at all. Simply brought to the table on the plate. I'd given up by this stage and was just glad that our previous hotel had given us a good breakfast and insisted on us taking the packed lunch which we normally decline. We'd finished it while waiting for "dinner". Was there anything good? Yes, the bread was lovely and the wines surprisingly reasonably priced. And the waiter - not the owner but the other chap - charm itself. Breakfast was completely different: a truly fabulous buffet spread, including a platter of cheeses. Why can't they offer the same generosity to their dinner guests? If you can't avoid going there, don't order the meat tasting menu and take plenty of snacks .

We were here with friends for drink and food and the service was absolutely terrible. Our waiter was rude and the boss was aggressive and wasn’t wearing a mask. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. Was a mistake coming here

Overall we had an okay stay there. We only stayed 1 night and it was okay for this short time, but I would not have enjoyed staying there for a longer period of time. The main highlight of this place is obviously its location: at the heart of Stresa. Strengths: (+) location: in the city centre of Stresa, at a short walk from restaurants, shops and the lake. (+) decent wifi (+) decent accommodation for a short stay (+) free public parking at a short walk Weaknesses: (-) Check-in and check-out: check-in was really weird as you have to enter the bar and you don't really know who to talk to behind the bar. I felt very uncomfortable, especially because I don't speak Italian and the faces were not the most welcoming ones. In the end, it was a nice young woman who took care of me in English and I felt better. She showed me the room and explained evrything there is to know. Check-out was also weird as you need to go again to the bar -the nice lady was not there. (-) elevator: very tiny elevator only for 2 people max., you can easily feel claustrophobic in there, but at the end, it is still working and doing the job. (-) the main door of the apartment cannot be locked, only the door of your room, so it can feel unsafe at times. (-) Kindly note that breakfast is Italian-style, so very light with a coffee, a juice and a croissant. If you want more, you need to pay extra.

We booked this for a one night stay because it was cheaper than staying right near the airport as we still had a rental car. It is about a 20 minute drive to MXP airport. The hotel is old. Dark. The back parking lot has no lights. The carpets are old and dirty. We had to pay $10 to get a controller for the air conditioning. No fans in our room was really hot. Couldn’t leave the windows open as it was a balcony with no screens. Wi-Fi worked, beds were OK. Shower was decent. Don’t stay here unless you are passing through and are trying to save money

A simple but very convenient place to stay (we stayed for 2 nights). Short distance to Malpensa airport and to sites on Lago Maggiore and Lago Orta. We had a lake view from the room and the lake is just opposite the entrance. Free parking on site was nice.

Simple, quaint villa on the hillside overlooking Lake Maggiore. Within walking distance of the lake and ferry. Basic but spacious accomodation, with a a selection of options for breakfast. Parking right out front.

Don’t book this room!!!! It looks nothing like the pictures!! Unfortunately our stay which was supposed to be for 3 days was horrible. When we first entered the room there was a terrible smell and it was not clean at all. On top of that the airconditioning wasn’t working and it was very dirty. There were stains on the couch and it smelled very stale. To be able to sit outside on the shared balcony I had to clean a table since it was very dirty. It was really smelly outside and I soon found out that it was because of dead bird in the flower box. We had had enough: the room didn’t live up to our expectations at all , there was dirt everywhere, it was really hot in our room etc. so we decided to call booking.com. There was no possibility to inform the hotel first since there was no one there. Booking.com called the manager and he agreed to come over to check the room. He never came, so we decided to go downstairs to look for him. He was angry and didn’t want to talk to my boyfriend at all. He started yelling and began to bring up things that didn’t have to do anything with the room at all. It was supposed to be our fault. He told us that we weren’t allowed to check in before 18:30, but when we just walked by we were given the key and they didn’t mind us checking in at all. According to the manager us checking in earlier was the reason why the room wasn’t clean?! While we were told that the cleaner was supposed to be finished with our room when we came by. I called booking.com again and they tried to talk to the manager. We booked a room with airconditioning but booking.com told us that for some reason the airconditioning was no longer on the list of facilities, so they couldn’t do anything for us. The manager didn’t want to return any of our money so we paid 240 euros for 3 days and we stayed for not even 2 hours (1,5 hour calling with booking.com). Please don’t go here!! I know that some of the reviews might look pretty good that’s why we booked the room, but our 2 hour stay was awful.
