Labuan Town Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Labuan Town

April 10, 2018 Velvet Champine

Victoria (Malaysian pronunciation: [vikˈtɔriˈa]) or Victoria Town (Malay: Bandar Victoria) is the capital of the Federal Territory of Labuan in Malaysia, an island group off the north coast of Borneo. It is located in the southeast corner of Labuan and its Malay name, "Bandar Labuan" is more commonly used by the locals than Victoria. The town is an urban district within the wider city limits of Victoria which includes Labuan Port, a sheltered deep-water harbour which is an important trans-shipment point for Brunei Darussalam, northern Sarawak and western Sabah.

I’ve written good reviews about this restaurant and in fact had recommended it to friends. Today I need to share my latest experience:
We came and occupied an unreserved table. Usually a waiter or waitress would immediately attend to our table to take order. But surprisingly that evening nobody came. I rose and came to the place where fresh fish is stored and tried to call a waiter/waitress but nobody came. Tried the payment counter but can’ get attention too. Spoke to a waitress to call the captain to take our order, no response. So after sitting down for some time, we decided to move out and went to another restaurant where we were welcomed and our food order taken.

Blue Whale Coffee House

Reviewed By lovestravel0 - Singapore

While preparing for my recent trip to Labuan I was surprised by the scarcity of information on the island.
Luckily, there was no lack of eating places here. But the one which caught my eye was the Blue Whale Coffee House which sports a cute logo of (what else??) a whale. It occupies the corner lot on the ground floor of the building and is a short walk away from the Labuan ferry terminal. Just the place for breakfast or lunch since it opens at 9am and closes at 5pm. Most importantly it is clean, bright, airy yet quiet; very conducive for a spot of conversation and relaxing over a cup of Hainan teh tarik (RM3.00) or Segafredo’s best coffee latte (RM5.50).
My husband and I love to try local dishes on our travels and the Blue Whale offers a bewildering array of tempting choices. We asked the affable owner, Bryan to introduce us his house specialties (normally a safe option). His suggestions of Sambal fried beehoon (RM7.50) and Singapore fried mee (RM7.50) met with our hearty approval. Both dishes were well cooked, not overly oily and very tasty. But we expected nothing less since the cook was none other than the owner’s wife and a certified chef to boot. There were several dishes on the menu that looked interesting but we were already full and we had a ferry to catch. Perhaps if we pass this way again….?
Tip: Get Bryan to tell you the location of the best satay stall in Labuan, maybe Malaysia!

Heard lots of good review and recommendations. Came here and ordered prawn, fish, vege and seafood food. Prawn served are pretty small and taste is just OK. Fish taste is OK. Nothing much to brag about. No live fish in tank to be chosen. Will not return if there is better dining place. Paid RM76 for the above dishes, fit for 2 persons.

Always good green seafood selection, from fish, prawns, crab and shell fish, like scallops. Reasonable and probably best price in Labuan.
Ambience is basic chinese coffee shop style restaurant, then again you're there for the seafood.
The Slipper shrimps or "Satak" local name, best in set fried. This time the drunken prawns was over cooked, a shame.

When in Labuan your choices are rather restricted and for a place serving decent quality food this place fits the bill.
Whilst located in the Tiara Hotel itself which is very ordinary the restaurant caters for small to larger dinner sessions
You need a car to get here or a taxi so factor that into account.
Beyond that worth a try.

The Grill at Tiara Labuan

Reviewed By D_Jekyll - Malaysia

Located inside Tiara Labuan Hotel, The Grill doubles up as the hotel's 24hrs coffee house. The menu is huge with a blend of local, asian and western fare. The Tiara Laksa is the arguably the best Sarawak Laksa available in Labuan. The Hainan chicken rice which came highly recommended, was pretty decent but I found the rice to be a little too mushy.
Other dishes we had was:
1. Nasi Goreng Kampung - Fried rice served with a fried egg, satay on skewers, fried chicken & prawn cracker. Overall taste was good but the chicken was over fried & bone dry
2. Seafood Tom Yam - The seafood was fresh but the tom yum soup tasted rather average
3. Prawns & Scallop - 2 giant prawns & 2 medium sized scallops served along with jacket potato, corn on the cob, cauliflower & canned button mushrooms. The prawn was frozen and not live/fresh while the jacket potato had no dressing (ie. Sour cream, bacon bits etc). But other than that, a pretty tasty treat
4. Deep Fried Mushroom - Tasted a bit weird because they used canned button mushrooms instead of fresh ones like swiss brown, white button or portobello
5. OX Tail Soup - Very tasty soup with a generous chunks of tail bone & meat
6. Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab - Soft shell crabs deep fried till crispy. Delicious but a tad too oily
7. Lamb Shoulder - 3 huge chunks of lamb served with fries, vegetables, canned button mushrooms & corn on the cob. The lamb was pretty good, juicy and tasty but the portion was just too huge for one person's consumption
8. Sirloin Steak - Ordered medium well and was served medium. Taste was good but texture was not impressive as it was coarse
9. Fillet Mignon - Served with sliced canned button mushrooms, mashed potato & a toast. Ordered medium well and was served almost well done so the meat was coarse, dry and flaky
Overall, The Grill serves up a pretty decent asian or local fare but falls short on the western fare. So order the correct food and enjoy the lovely ambience both indoor or alfresco. A good point to note as well that the price starts from as low as RM10+ for an asian dish, all the way up to RM220 for the wagyu steak.
Also, the serving portion here is huge and definitely a good value for money. For people with small appetite, order one serving and share.
