Toto

We visited Toto during our stay in Coroico and were treated to a delicious home made pasta meal. The welcome was extremely friendly and the pasta dish was the best we had in Bolivia. The home made dulce de leche helado made by the owner`s son was particularly delicious. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a great Italian in Coroico.

El Cafetal

Reviewed By verdegirl

On wed. July 16th, 2014 we went to Cafetal for dinner – we were the ONLY people in the restaurant. Their menu looked good, so despite the terrible reviews regarding this hostal/restaurant’s service, we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. I wish we had not, an had instead listened to our instincts and the reviews of others. I am a vegetarian so finding veggie options in Boliva can often be challenging, this menu did have a few – a vegetable curry, cheese quinoa dish and a veggie curry crepe were two that caught my eye. Since I had just eaten quinoa for dinner yesterday, I wanted to try the veggie crepe, however, I thought I would ask if they could add cheese or egg to it so that I would have some protein. I asked the waitress, who said that she would ask the chef/owner. This woman came out, spoke quite sternly to us and explained that she had studied food and so she would NOT under any circumstances change her menu – and that furthermore, cheese/egg would not go good with curry. This tone caught us quite off guard, as we were paying customers making a very simple request. Interestingly enough as well, the quinoa dish that she had suggested came with just that – cheese, curry and vegetables … the combo can’t be too terrible after all seeing as how it is actually listed on the menu?! So I decided to get a soup and the vegetable crepe (without protein), and my husband got the Chinese curry rice dish – we ordered and proceeded to be amazed. Our waitress came to our table to bring condiments and cutlery, first with her cell phone in pocket, then next with her cell phone in her hand. Then we sat there at our table and watched as she made calls on her cell phone in the restaurant across from where we were sitting … not really what we are used to in our dinners out. Soon the food came and it was very good, which we had heard about the food, however, I decided to only eat half of my crepe so that we could share dessert. The waitress came to our table ON her cell phone this time and asked in Spanish if she could take my dish and I said “si, pero la comida para llevar.” This has a pretty clear meaning – “yes, but the food to take away (take home).” She took my food with out saying anything and then we ordered and ate dessert. When it came time to pay the bill we asked where my leftovers were and she said that she threw them out !? Half of a huge, beautiful crepe ?! How, why, I asked ?? She said that she didn’t understand that I wanted it to go. Well, I don’t speak perfect Spanish but I know that I was pretty clear in saying that I wanted it “to go”, NOT thrown out. Although I suppose requests can easily become confusing when you are not actually listening to the customer because you are talking on your cell phone - SERIOUSLY! So I asked to speak with the chef/owner again, thinking that she would try and straighten this out somehow and she came out to speak with us again. I explained what had happened and she told us that the girl misunderstood what I had said. I mentioned that she might have better luck understanding if she wasn’t on her cell phone while she was serving us and the woman asked the girl if this was true. Of course she said no, that she used her phone after serving us … which was a total bold faced lie, although still ridiculous to suggest its ok to be talking on your phone anytime while you are working. Anyway, the employee then did offer to pay for my crepe herself, to which chef/owner replied absolutely not, that the employee had only been working there for 2 days, had misunderstood my request, and that was that! Hence, why for the first time ever, I am reviewing a restaurant on Trip Advisor. The French owners of this place must either not need the money from the restaurant/hostel or just simply DO NOT CARE AT ALL about their customers satisfaction or their reputation. I would NEVER under any circumstances recommend this restaurant or hostel to ANYONE. There are plenty of wonderful budget places to eat and stay in Coroico like: Carla’s Pub, Sol y Luna, Pizzaria Toto, Café Almendras, Café Bamboo, Café Arco Iris, Coroico Star, Hostal Uchmachi,Villa Bonita and Hostal Chawi. If you are staying long-term, a family just up the road from Hotel Bonito Paraiso, on the lefthand side (past the hospital) rents out cabanas and have a Spanish school as well (you will see the small wooden sign). We can also recommend our Spanish teacher Siria Leon: [email protected] for private classes. Sadly though, I CAN NOT recommend Cafetal for staying or eating, as I deeply regret spending our money there and supporting a place that treats people like garbage and has standards such as this for service.

Back-Stube Konditorei

The Backstube is very well located just beside the main plaza of Coroico. They have a beautiful terrace with a gorgeous view. The pepper steak with Spätzle (60B) was excellent. The Kässpätzle (German noodles with cheese, 45B) had far too little cheese (only one layer on the top) and far too much pepper (burning away my mouth). The cheesecake (13B) was dry and tasteless. If all the food had been convincing, the prices would have been alright. They are higher than in other restaurants.
