Had a drink here for our last night in kumamoto. We knew kyushu is known for shochu so we decided to come here to learn more about this Japanese drink. The owner Nori san is Very polite, welcoming, knowledge and is very enthusiastic about shochu. We ordered the tasting of traditional and trendy to taste and see the difference of the shochu. It was a great and educational experience. We also met some locals who were very friendly and enthusiastic as well.Over all great place. Check this bar out. Highly recommended. Saitama Prefecture, Japan Food Guide: 3 Asian food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Wako
On the exterior, Onion looks like a quiet litte Japanese cafe on a busy street. The inside is cozy, full of natural lighting, and adorned with works from local artists. I would describe the style as modern, but homey. It's quite charming. My wife and I stopped by for lunch. Our server, the chef's daughter, apparently studied abroad in Australia, and speaks English perfectly. She offered to explain the menu, if we couldn't read it. We can both read Japanese well enough, but it was helpful for her to offer.Lunch had, I think, different set meals: chicken nanban, beef curry, or hamburger steak. My wife got the hamburg, and I got the beef curry. The chef makes everything to order, so while we had to wait longer than many lunch restaurants in Japan, it was still less of a wait than a restaurant in America. It was definitely worth the wait. The beef curry was quite good, but the real star was the hamburg. It was juicy and the sauce was very flavorful. Next time I will definitely order it for myself. The sets came with rice, soup, salad, and a drink. The server brought our coffees to us at the end of the meal, which was a perfect finish. If your Japanese skills aren't great, or you just need to take a break and speak some English while having a great meal, Onion is a good call.
