Wakaba Ryokan is a small and friendly,family-run Japanese- style inn near the centre of Kurokawa
A very cosy ryokan just beside the river and close to the centre of Kurogawa old town. We stayed in room 105 which was at the end of the ryokan and very quiet and private. They have a public and family onsen. Need to reserve the 50-min private onsen in advance and it is open until very late. The public onsen opens at 6.30am so if you are there early, you will have the whole onsen overlooking a bamboo forest all by yourself. Very therapeutic. Fantastic breakfast too.

We stayed at Aso Farmland in October for one night and would not recommend it to other travellers. The layout of the hotel domes feels like you are staying in some sort of dystopian suburb. The reception, parking and hotel rooms are all very far apart and require a lot of walking in a boring asphalt jungle to get between various locations. The room itself smelt damp and, while spacious, was just not very pleasant to stay in. Food at the buffet was poor compared to the standard in Japan. The onsen was decent and is the only reason we would give this place more than 1 star. The check in opens late and most of the farmland activities closed early the day we arrived. They also only give a 10% discount on activities to hotel guests. Seeing as this place was several hundred dollars (AUD) for a night this was definitely not worthwhile. Stay elsewhere.

It’s an iconic ryokan located at the heart of Kurokawa onsen and surrounded by the hill and forests besides running streams and waterfalls. The design of building and the decorative traveled me back to the ancient Japanese era. Every corner of the ryokan is a photo taking point. We arrived around 12.30pm and kept out luggages at the ryokan as the check in time is 3pm. Upon checking in, the friendly and helpful staff show us around the dining area, the onsen area and brought us to our room. Our luggage already inside our room. We’re served for the green tea and snacks. There are 4 onsens at the ryokan for the guests to explore, including the most famous cave onsen! Kaiseki dinner was served in the dinner room. Good spread and very delicious. Breakfast was served in the dining area at ground floor. The ryokan was kind enough to send us to the bus station on the day we left. I had a wonderful time at this lovely onsen ryokan. We will come back soon!

Well renovated hotel with nice onsen and facilities. It is only 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from Fukuoka airport. Breakfast is Japanese style and should also be a good tourist experience. Can also explore walking around the town and along the river. However, the hotel hotspring footbath was not very hot.

Our facility is not new, and there are some steps but we make good use of that geological features. We are particular about serving cuisine one by one, and you will see how fresh our cuisine is! We serve free coffee and tea at our lounge. You can also enjoy 3 different types of family hot springs for free while you are staying.
This is an old onsen as they describe themselves, but not with traditional over the top service as you might expect. We paid a premium for a private bath that was lovely with quite a large room. We were glad we had it because when we went to the communal hot bath you had to wait on line to use one of only 3 places to wash. Lightning is an issue if you want to read anything other than a backlit device. The food was average for a ryokan and served so quickly that dishes piled up on our table getting cold before we could eat them. When we asked them to please slow down, they simply let the food get cold in the kitchen. Our biggest complaint was the attitude of the English speaking hostess. She was abrupt, pushy and really made us angry when she demanded we pay in cash even though our confirmation clearly stated Visa. If you have never had a ryokan experience, this would give you a chance to experience an old one with pretty gardens but don’t expect more.

Hotel located 1000 - 1200 m from Aso-eki (no shuttle), I enjoyed my western-style room with the view on the volcano. However, the room needs to be refreshed and have better curtains. The onsen is average in quality. The food buffet is large and you can find all you want for dinner but breakfast has less choice.

This is the second time we go to this outstanding Ryokan and it was another amazing experience. Its location within the centre of Kurosawa is perfect and allows you to walk to the other onset. There is poking available if yo come by car. The rooms are typical Japanese style with the comfort you need as well as privacy. The onsen is magnificent, next to the river and you can relax in the bath while listening to the water fall. What makes also this place unique is the delicious dinner and breakfast, where every details and taste are amazing. And if there is something you don't like, the ryokan will send you an email before to ask your preference. Finally, the manager was so nice and made us feel valued. She remembered us from the year before, helped us find great places and explained the best way to make tea after giving us as gift one of the finest tea from Kyushu. we will come back for sure!

Well we certainly had a unique experience at this fine Ryokan. Our room was very nice with comfortable double bed (western style) but with a tub / shower outdoors on our private porch. Tub supplied by local hot water (but no too hot). We were prepared delicious and gracious vegetarian meals. (Eating Japanese style). Very welcoming staff and with decent English. Free WIFI in bar. Free parking. Very special.

Hot SpringOutdoor Hot SpringsOur alluring outdoor hot springs, which provide you the luxury of being one with nature along side a beautiful natural mountain stream, lush with trees is an experience worth encountering. The sound of the water trickling through the mountains while soaking in the hot springs is such an enriching experience that you will never want it to end. Enjoy the splendor of “Yamamizuki,” a symbol that cherishes nature and comfort.
Words cannot describe this heavenly Ryokan. Exceptionally clean rooms (take this for granted as you travel in Japan but here it is another level), amazing 10 courses breakfast and dinner (maybe more) with chef's special menu each time I revisited, and the top of the world indoor /outdoor onsen....it is my third visit and will come back one day. This is the place where true luxury is, surrounded by kind people, culture and nature.
