Kitzeck is the central settlement in the Sausal mountain range in Southern Styria, Austria. It is the highest-altitude wine-growing community in Central Europe. Kitzeck is home to the first wine museum that was established in Styria (1979). Besides wine culture, tourism has become a pillar of the local economy and obviously both are pursued on close combination.

Came to this restaurant by accident. It was Easter time and most of the restaurants in the area were closed, but this one was open. We were surprised by the quality of food as well as by the size of the portions :) Kitchen is Austrian but not greasy. You can share main courses and Deserts - both are huge!

Perfect place if you are looking for authentic Styrian pub. I recommend to try Brettjause - plate with meat, wurst & cheese.

We have been visiting this place the second time in for years and since we were do much excited the first time we looked forward to explore the art of cooking and hospitality again. But , unfortunately the owner decided to expand and in or opinion this had an effect on many things compared to times when the place was much smaller. We missed authenticity , we missed the nice and causy atmosphere , we missed time from the owner for chatting
Of course out it is still one off the best places you can find on this area but unfortunately it has "grown"from excellent to very good and in our opinion not deserved the two hats anymore like some years ago.

Worth the drive to enjoy this restaurant. A charming Styrian delight...great view, sit outside if weather is nice. I recommend the fried chicken, just excellent. And a salad with pumpkin seed oil. Fabulous.

Also listed in Gault Millau, Austrian Edition .
I just came back from my second dinner at the Kirchenwirt Heber and – once again – I am left feeling completely happy and satisfied, and would like to finally leave this restaurant a 5-Star Rating.
The location of the Kirchenwirt Heber, in Kitzeck im Sausal, means it is cropped high up on a hill, offering stunning views of the valley from the outdoor Terrace (where we had dinner on a Friday night this August). The waitress is a lovely, friendly young woman and the head waiter is also friendly, polite, and helpful.
The food is, seriously, to die for. Kirchenwirt Heber was the last leg of a two-week holiday in Italy where we ate in predominantly excellent Italian restaurants.. but it was, without a doubt, the Kirchenwirt that was the culinary star of the whole vacation!
We ordered the Chicken Liver Paté, Pumpkin Paté, Sautéed Chicken Liver with Warm Tomato Salad, Cured Salmon and Chanterelle Mushrooms, Sautéed Calf's Liver with Baked Potatoes, Nougat Semifreddo, Chocolate Mousse, and Selection of Three Local Cheeses. Honestly- I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the service, the quality and taste of the food, the wines (which were wonderfully paired with each different course by our waitress), or the location.
We love Kirchenwirt Heber and can’t wait to be back again soon!
P.S. Last year we travelled through Kitzeck im Sausal a little later in September, so the menu was a little different (a lot more pumpkin dishes!); if you’re there this or next month, and you see the “Pumpkin Carpaccio” (“Kürbis-Carpaccio”) in the menu – you must try it, it was INCREDIBLE last year!

Seating area outside and indoor is very large and spacious.
Children's play area outside.
Service is polite and quick however the Delivery of food is very very slow. Correction of mistakes to order takes the same amount of time as the original time which is very long.
Standard brettle jaus is below average quality but at a reasonable price.
The soft drinks that are produced on site are if a high calibre which also goes for the wine.
I wouldn't go again.

This is a great place for a traditional Austrian lunch. The Backhandle and Schnitzels are excellent. Salads have of course the wonderful Steirisches Kurbis Kern Oil. If it's just a coffee you want that you can of course do after lunch time and enjoy a great selections of cakes. Very friendly husband and wife team run, cook and manage the place. Slight drawback is its proximity to the road. The passing card are not too bad but the infrequent lorries are very loud. Not a problem if you are sitting inside.

A very cozy and traditional place to visit If you are looking for great wine and a nice ambiance. The wines of Grengross are highly recomended and have won several prizes. I hope to be able to drink this wine again!
