Kirkwall (Scottish Gaelic: Bàgh na h-Eaglaise) is the largest settlement and capital of Orkney, an archipelago in the north of Scotland, as well as the most populous island settlement in Scotland. The city is first mentioned in Orkneyinga saga in the year 1046 when it is recorded as the residence of Rögnvald Brusason the Earl of Orkney, who was killed by his uncle Thorfinn the Mighty. In 1486, King James III of Scotland elevated Kirkwall to the status of a royal burgh; modern roadsigns still indicate "The City and Royal Burgh of Kirkwall".

After missing the morning ferry (on a Sunday!) my friends and I searched around Kirkwall for somewhere to have breakfast (around 9am). Everywhere we tried either didn't open until 10/11am (by which time we would be on our way back to St Margaret's Hope for the next ferry), or turfed us out like wet, homeless cats because we weren't guests staying there. The woman at the reception at The Shore said the same, 10am opening on Sunday's. We then went back to my car, desolate and hungry, agreeing it would need to just be a tesco job, until the most compassionate and friendly woman (possibly that I have ever met) came outside (in the rain!) to my car and told us, "Don't sit in your car, never mind the the opening time just come in the warmth and I'll get the Chef to cook you up some breakfast." Cold, tired and hungry, we could have cried. The woman gave us menus for cooked items and invited us to help ourselves to the array of continental breakfast items available; four different kinds of fruit juices, cereals, white and brown toast, jams, fruit, yoghurt... The Mocha she made me was to die for, and my French friend wanted to know which teas were available, so the woman kindly brought out a variety to show her. Off the cooked menu, I had an omelette - with Orkney cheese of course - which was excellent. All of this for £8 a head and you could have as much as you wanted. I cannot give this establishment a good enough review, and it's down to the woman who served us. Her exceptional customer service and genuine human kindness was second to no other service I have ever received. I would absolutely recommend The Shore and hope karma one day rewards this kind woman. Unfortunetely, I never got her name, but she is credit to Orkney. Also thanks to the Chef for starting his shift early for us!

Our breakfasts were all good with good service. But, our one & only dinner was terrible. Between four of us, not one person enjoyed their meal & I might go as far as to say mine was un edible.

Award Winning Restaurant. Recommended by the ‘Which? Good Food Guide 2011’ FOUR years running!! & “WINNER of Best Take Away in Taste of Orkney Food Awards 2007”. Our Executive Chef Moina Miah has cooked for Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay and Actor/ Comedian Billy Connolly. Our diverse menu is packed full of flavours from North India and Bangladesh. Each dish is always thoughtfully prepared with locally sourced produce.
I popped in here for a meal on the off chance while waiting for the ferry to Shetland. I ordered a drink while checking out the menu. The waiter came to take my order and like I do in many Indian restaurants I ordered two side dishes instead of a main dish. That along with rice chapati and the drink would have come to £13, but I was rudely informed by the waiter that I could only have a side dish if I ordered a main. I paid for my drink and left. Probably a bit childish, but it had been a long day.

Firstly it is important for any new visitors trying to book or visit Helgi's to know that we are an over 18's only bar. That includes throughout the building and at all times. Helgi's is a small cosy pub overlooking the harbour. We serve good pub food of the home cooking variety, trying to use local produce where possible. We have a great selection of local ales in bottles and three Rob Hill ales on draft, we also have a good selection of Orcadian and Scottish whisky, and our wine list has been selected by our local wine expert, Duncan McLean from Kirkness & Gorie. We also offer a great selection of cocktails, beers and spirits. Please be aware that we have an over 18's only licence, which means that we cannot allow children, even for meals.
Friendly place with good range of drinks and cocktails. Good atmosphere. Had dinner which was grim. A mountain of smoked salmon which was tasteless and served with hard biscuits. My husbands food was all deep fried and tasteless. The spicy cheese fondue was too hot to eat, and I liked spicy food. Couldn't fault the service though.

At the Foveran, you can enjoy the finest Orkney produce in a relaxed and comfortable setting with stunning views across historic Scapa Flow. Superb seafood features strongly on our menu along with prime beef and lamb. We work closely with local livestock farmers, fishermen and growers to select the best seasonal produce for our larder ensuring we obtain the highest quality. We strive to create dishes from the freshest, local ingredients. Our philosophy is about using the elements of Orkney's natural environment to produce dishes which are tasty and memorable. We also offer a wide range of carefully selected wines, liqueurs, local craft beers, gins and malts. These can be enjoyed at your table, or in the more relaxed setting of the lounge. We're really proud to have been four times winner of the Orkney Food and Drink 'best evening meal' Award Winner of Best use of Orkney Food and Drink products 2016 Award and the first 'Orkney Masterchef 2014 title.
I recently visited Foveran with my fiancee in order to celebrate our anniversary. Unfortunately, it did not live up to our expectations. First of all, we felt very rushed by the staff since 3 different waiters came up to us while seated in the lounge to 1. take our drink order. 2. rush us to order food. 3. rush us to order wine. We got our drinks and then got rushed to our table. (we felt as if we were on a conveyor belt!)
Restaurant mostly empty, but we got seated right opposite the door of the kitchen and right next to another table. Starters served hastily while we were still sipping our pre-dinner drink. Gin & tonic and scallops? What was the rush? Oh. Music blaring out the speakers, terrible music (stressful) choice and no ambience what so ever. Waiters running in and out the door to the kitchen as if it was rush hour. Main course… pheasant which was dry and served with some kind of very bland and pale sauce which didn’t lift the dish in the slightest, it didn't taste of anything either. Boring potatoes and boiled vegetables with it, (at this moment we realised it was all very overpriced).
To end it all, the waitress came and took our plates and dropped lots of dirty cutlery on our table. Yay, my dress got stained as well. Fun times. The 100 pounds spent felt like a waste. Next time we will… no, there won't be a next time.

The Reel In 2002 the Wrigley Sisters returned to Orkney to live and set up their business, and in 2004 The Reel was established, allowing them to ‘put something back into’ the community of Orkney.’ "With both lasses having now settled back in Orkney their attention has turned to managing the ‘Reel’ – the sisters’ Centre of Music on Broad Street in Kirkwall. The centre has experienced phenomenal success in the few years it has been open, to the extent that it has recently moved to the building formerly occupied by VisitOrkney, next to St Magnus Cathedral. "Aswell as a being home to many folk & blues sessions and the Orkney Strathspey and Reel, The Reel also holds various classes in many different instruments taught by a wealth of talented teachers. The Reel offers and encourages a fully ‘inclusive’ approach, catering for all members of the community, especially families, and all age groups. The existing aesthetics, atmosphere and management approach fully encourages, supports and positively impacts upon this ethos. The management’s existing attitude and approach to providing a high quality and friendly customer service is also considered exemplary.

Welcome to Lucano – restaurant - cafe - pizzeria - bringing you freshly cooked Italian food for all times of the day. Whether you just want a cappuccino or three course lunch you’ll find it all here. Children's menu and also a full wine list available from 11am.
Who would have thought that a wonderful Italian restaurant could be found in a small village on Orkney Island?
We spent 11 nights in Orkney and ate at Lucano's 4 times. There are excellent choices for vegetarians as well. From wonderful mussel appetizers to delicious desserts, this restaurant could easily be successful in any 'Little Italy' neighborhood in the US.
We went there for my birthday and Lucanos personnel made it a genuinely fun experience.
I easily could have eaten here even more than we did.
Dish to savor: Mussels!!

We are delighted to annouce that we have just received an award from the scottishhomebakingawards. We will be taking part in the national finals for 2013.
Popped in here for lunch when working in the area. Independent cafes can be a bit hit and miss, but this is definitely a hit. Warm welcome from girls behind counter and fantastic tasty bowl of home made soup. Coffee was good too! Unpretentious cafe that seemed to be a hit with locals and visitors alike.

We were recommended to try the Ayre Hotel for a meal. Food was lovely - could not fault anything we had. Staff were very good, friendly and very efficient. I would recommend eating her if visiting Kirkwall. Booking would be advisable too. We had booked earlier in the day.
