Reviews on Japanese food in Yakushima-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Seize the beautiful day on the Osumi Island of Yakushima-cho, covered in gorgeous and dense forest that’s said to have inspired the classic anime film Princess Mononoke. Frolic with native deer, red-bottomed monkeys and migratory sea turtles (as much as you can frolic with a turtle, anyway), while you breathe in the sweet scent of ancient Japanese cedar. Yakushima’s unique eco-system is simultaneously subtropical and subarctic, an environmental anomaly that only enhances the unique and special properties of the island.

We hit this place up after hiking to Taiko-Iwa rock in Shiratani, and we were starving! I got a cutlet and our friend got Udon and it was all delicious. What was even better though is that it has its own gift shop full of yakusugi trinkets and the visitor center is right next door and that place also has its own gift shop. I brought back the most adorable little charms from here. It's a great place to eat and buy gifts for family and friends back home.

Your stay/hotel can order a 500yen bento a night before to be picked up for Jomon sugi hikers before the first bus (4:49am) leaves across from the shop at Anbo bus stop.
The place is gorgeous, it is yet simple but very traditional and cosy! The food was really good and the service delightful. Last but not least it is insanely cheap for the quality offered. It was something around (1000 yens) 10 dollars for a full set!

Our expectations for food in Yakushima were not high having been told by friends that it was hard to find somewhere good to eat. Jiijiya proved those expectations wrong and turned out to be a really excellent Japanese izakaya. They serve a wide variety of quite reasonably priced dishes and it is clear that the staff take a real pride in the food. The staff are young and the place has a modern feel with cool music playing giving the place an atmosphere somewhere between a wine bar and a more traditional izakaya. We were a hungry group of 5 who normally eat enough for 10 and we tried a wide range of the menu items, many of which taste much better than they sound. For example the slow cooked pork cartilage rice bowl was absolutely delicious as was the bonito rice bowl. The sashimi selection included flying fish and broken-neck mackerel and was superb. We also tried the local speciality, something I've often seen and never fancied trying - a hot-pot (nabe) based on intestines and vegetables. It was delicious, especially when the residual soup is mixed with rice to create a kind of Japanese risotto. There were many less exotic and equally delicious items on the menu too and it all washed down very nicely with glasses of draft ichiban shibori. Lots and lots of food for about JPY3000 per head, and you could easily eat for a lot less. Excellent value, good service and really great food.

This is a great ocean front restaurant just a few min. walk from the Anbo port. It opens at 11am. They specialize in Udon + many different combination options, flying fish, shrimp tempura, curry, etc. etc. (no soba). The soup is so so but adding spiced hot Yuzu oil becomes delicious. They also have wasabi oil. The prices are a little higher than other places but it is made up by the view from the restaurant. This place also have a camp site (800yen a night). They have covered BBQ pit and benches. It looked great for snorkeling among the rocky and clean and clear blue water.

We had a very enjoyable dinner at this small-ish seafood restaurant owned and run by a local fisherman, so you wouldnât be surprised that the sashimi was very fresh and tasty. They have an english menu and some flipcards showing the different fish being served so between that and their basic english and our abysmal japanese we did pretty OK.We had a medium sashimi which had 6 different local fish. The flying fish and the snapper were probably our favourites but they were all good.We also had tempura sweet potato and baked eggplant. Both delicious. And more than enough for us. About Â¥40000 without drinks which seemed pretty reasonable value to us.Everyone was very friendly and helpful including some of the guests. There are about 8 seats at the bar and two tables on the tatami. We booked and that is probably best but you may be fine as a walkup.

This place has delicious karage, very crispy and big pieces and for an additional price you can make it a set to get tofu, miso soup and rice. The restaurant opened a bit early just so we can have dinner there. Excellent service

In 2016, we opened Restaurant Panorama after renovating a 50-year-old hardware store. Since then, it has been the neighborhood hub for Yakushima locals and travelers from all over the world. Using locally grown vegetables and fresh caught Yakushima seafoo
There was this restaurant's business card at our accommodation, it looked good, but we were not expecting THIS good!!!!The chef suggestion were fabulous! You have to try the sashimi. We had the bonito and it was flawless. The squid and zucchinis is amazing too. Nice wine and beer selection. Great staff. Very friendly.

Really enjoyed the meal at Shiosai. I had the sashimi and tempura set meal and it was delicious. Since I ordered from the set menu, it came with miso soup, steamed egg custard and rice. There was a lot of food. Everything was delicious and it was fun sitting in the tatami room. If you want good food, you should come here.
