Arai Ryokan

Izu Peninsula, the nation's largest hot springs resort, is about 2-hours train ride from Tokyo. Shuzenji Hot Springs is the oldest resort in Izu. River and its traditional Japanese style wooden structures are scattered in the large garden of about 5,000 ㎡. There is more than 140 years history. Many celebrated writers and painting artist, including Yokoyama Taikan and Kawabata Yasunari, are among the frequent guests. It is located at the center of Shuzenji Hot Springs, a short distance from sightseeing spots. Arai Ryokan is the inn where you can certainly enjoy the every essence of Japanese nature of four seasons, the traditional culture, art and architecture. All guest rooms are the traditional architecture and the rooms themselves overlook either the Katsura River or the garden or the courtyard with its large pond full of carp to enjoy the beauty of each season. Among the main attractions are the baths. The main bath, the Tenpyo Dai Yokudo, are built in 1933, with all cypress, by Nara Era(the 8th century) architectural style. The outdoor bath is located in Japanese garden and the family bath can be reserved for private use. All bath are the natural hot springs. The meal is kaiseki cuisine featuring the local fresh sea food and vegetable. Both dinner and breakfast are served in guest rooms. Meat dish or vegetarian meals are available for dinner also we can serve a continental breakfast. Please make request upon booking. The Bamboo Lane which is ranked ★★ in Michelin Green Guide Japan 2009 and 2011, Shuzenji Temple of 1200 years' history are short distance from the ryokan, 3-minutes walk. Also, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and the Suruga Bay from the peak of Mt. Daruma which is 20-minutes drive from the ryokan.

Classic beauty

Reviewed By 106christie

We stayed one night. The ryokan is everything you’d have dreamt of a traditional onsen experience. Our room is a river-facing, the river is literally flowing next to the room. The bamboo trail is directly opposite making an impeccable view. We suspected in autumn the room will also see an abundant maple trees. There are 4 free baths, the outdoor and ‘big bath house’ are the best. The free private bath is a very nice touch, good for family and couples. Food is very good as well, filled with some many delicate touches and seasonal picks, if you eat too fast or too big a mouthful it’s likely you’d have missed a few good things without realising. The ryokan’s size and setting is most enjoyable. Inner courtyards and ponds are beautifully curated adding to the aged beauty of the buildings. Aged trees and streams, every corner, indoor or outdoor, it’s a delight to discover. The neighbourhood is a nice little pocket perfect to explore for a good day/half-day. Will recommend arriving a bit early to explore the vicinity including Shuzenji and it’s back-hill area. The Main Street along the ryokan also offers some shops to explore for a snack or souvenir. Would highly recommend to all who crave a serene onsen experience. Note: the river could be ‘loud’ for some as it is not a small stream but a constant hush of water. Some will consider it sounding like white noise. If you need to sleep in absolute silence consider courtyard-facing rooms instead.

This place offer high value for money! Recommend Pro: - Big ryokan, room is very spacious (in Japan standard) - 2 private onsen room (no extra cost), you can just use it when the room is free - Outdoor onsen and indoor hotbath available - Food is decent - Offer daily lounge for drink, and late night ramen snack (very yummy) - Service is nice - Location is great, right outside bus stop and you can walk around Shuzenji easily Con - You may hear the room next door as the structure is old, but we are feel it is acceptable

Hidden gem!

This hotel offers a 5 stars service at a price of 3 stars hotel I would say. Location is quite good since it is just a few minutes drive from the infamous Joren Falls.Hotel staffs provide the greatest level of omotenashi. Room is nice and cosy with private onsen in every Western style room or suites I think. The room view overlooking the river and myriads of autumn colours is just breathtaking. We stayed there during weekdays so probably that is why we got the deal at a price where no where else could give with such services. Didn't try the meals though. We really cherished every second spent there and would love to come back again. Recommended to all!

Pretty nice hot springs, but for the effort to get there...

Reviewed By Canmaninjapan

It was our second time to the area. When we arrived, I was impressed with the entrance, although there wasn't any warm greeting. We had a car, so it was not too bad to get there. Getting there by any other kind of transportation would have been a hassle. There is a wifi hotspot near the lobby, but other than that nothing. Why not??? The room was nice, with a wooden sunken bath overlooking the river. The lobby is on the 5th floor, which is the top floor. Everything else is down and the hotel runs along the river. There are four private baths that are quite nice, although they close at around 11 pm and do not open again until 3 pm the next day....again...why??? Some of the waterspouts for the showers do not work or have extremely low water pressure. As for the food, maybe a 5/10. It is a half buffet, with some food already on the table (sashimi...standard and nothing special), with a couple of table with salad, fruit, a few kinds of cake, tempura (not hot), etc. Nothing memorable. Breakfast was similar but I think I wasn't the only one who wanted a cup of coffee...too bad. There wasn't any. They should invest in a machine. The English instructions around the hotel are limited and spotty. There should be more consistency with that due to the obvious large number of foreign guests. Although I really enjoyed the outdoor baths, I don't think I would make the effort to go again. If you can get a cheap rate, enjoy.

Comfortable hotel with hot spring. Free wine at dinner time.

Perfect Ending to A Trip to Japan

Reviewed By alexr123456789

My boyfriend and I visited Sagasawakan for three nights and had the most magnificent stay. The warm service and meticulous attention to detail went above and beyond our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we knew the reviews of this place do not do it justice. We stayed in the Western-style room with private onsen and we highly recommend it. The meals here were exquisite and in many cases, better than $200 omakase experiences in Kyoto and Tokyo. Although most of the staff do not speak English, this was no problem at all and we were able to effectively communicate. On our last day, it was raining as we were planning to leave to catch the bus to the train station. Despite the fact that we left an hour before the complimentary daily shuttle bus, the manager insisted we be driven in her personal car to the train station to avoid getting wet. She even gave us an umbrella to take. I cannot recommend this hotel enough - we will definitely be back if we ever return to Japan!

Large, yet lovely Ryokan

Reviewed By Vieltraveller

This Ryokan has more the size of a hotel, but it never feels like it unless in the hallways. Otherwise, it's always private, including dining (not in the room, tough). We had our personal server so to speak from arrival to departure. There's also an onsen which was the only thing not feeling really special. The room was large and nice and during dinner, the beds were made. The Ryokan is kind of far away from the last bus stop.
