SAKAEYA has been in business in the onsen town of Ousyuku, nestled in the heart of the Morioka region of Iwate Prefecture. We strive to provide our guests with a nostalgic guesthouse with a retro feeling, which has been loved for many years. In addition to relaxing in the natural waters of our onsen, we invite you to enjoy our expertly prepared cuisine with ingredients sourced from the local Shizukuishi area, while experiencing the beauty of Japan's four seasons. We look forward to your visit!
The Minshuku is hidden behind a big hotel, it was quite a bit hard to find first time. The owner was very nice, although she doesn't speak English but her son helped her. The onsen was nice but the facility inside wasn't, (I don't use soap for shower). I booked 2 single rooms, the room for my friend, it had toilet but my room hadn't. Dinner was nice it costs 2500yen but breakfast was so so and costs 1000yen (not a good value)

* Japanese style 11 roomsb(6 to 12 tatami mats, without bathroom) * Room facilities: TV, bathtowels, facetowels, toothbrushes, razors, and yukatas are provided in the guest room. * Guests are expected to lay out their own futon.
I find it difficult to give a rating for this place, as there were some highs and some lows during our two-night stay. First of all, I expected a small, friendly homestay, but in reality it felt more like a rather impersonal youth hostel with quite a few rooms sharing very limited toilet and bathroom facilities. Our tatami matted room was large and pleasant enough, but having to brush your teeth in the tiny sink in the toilet area (for women there was one western, one squat toilet) made the experience less delightful than it could have been. The bathroom seemed to be either occupied or being cleaned (at 9 in the morning!) and when I managed to get in there eventually it smelled mouldy. Having said that, the dining experience was the complete opposite of what I have just described - the food was truly excellent. We had notified the staff that we didn't eat meat so they prepared some lovely fish dishes, one of which was roasted fish in the hearth in the middle of the very beautiful dining room. It has been mentioned before but you have to try the unfiltered sake, it's very good. If I could, I would give my overall experience 3,5 stars, but that's just because I am particular about bathroom facilities. By the way, there aren't many restaurants in Tono as far as we could see, another reason to have dinner here. Note that there are no locks on the doors (not uncommon in Japan) and there is no wifi. The inn is not in the centre of town, you have to walk around the station to cross the railway tracks. As Tono is mainly about the countryside, you might also want to stay outside town. The valley is fantastic to explore by bicycle.

My husband and I stayed for two nights in a Japanese-style room. The room is very large, very comfortable. The entire place is spotlessly clean, (brand new?) with wonderful touches like coin-op washer and dryer, toiletries of all sorts, shared fridge and a hangout room. There are two showers and male/female toilet rooms. Since there are few rooms the shared bathroom is not at all a problem and it’s all so clean and beautifully set up! The host is very kind, with great communication before and during our stay. He speaks great English, albeit shyly :) He went out of his way to arrange an advance request for us which made our stay in Hiraizumi incredibly memorable. He even has a 15 min or so DVD for guests to watch about the town and attractions. This is truly a “grown-up” shared accommodation that’s comfortable and welcoming. And did I already say CLEAN???? You simply can’t beat this, especially for the price.

Takakin is not far from Kamaishi station located in a small street, less than a 10 minute walk. I was given a lovely traditional room at the back with a futon bed. The room was very light and spacious and very quiet. There are shared toilets and bathroom all spotless and well maintained. I had a lovely Japanese style breakfast. The ryokan is run by a family and the staff are friendly and provide a wonderful low-key service for guests. I would definitely recommend this place as a nice place to stay. Close to shops and supermarkets.
