Listened to the waitresses yakking about a customer that called to complain. He said he had been coming here for years but will never return. The waitresses and the owner said they didn't recognize him. As I sat at the counter waiting for my breakfast for over a half-hour I watched all of the waitresses grab water cups and drag their dirty hands through the ice chest to fill the cups instead of using the nice ice cup that was just sitting on the chest as required by the Iowa Health Department. I won't be coming back for their way over-priced food that I can get cheaper and faster at Perkins. They don't even give a military discount like the 20% off that Perkins does. They are slow at coffee refills even when you're sitting at the diner counter. It was a slow day at the end of summer with very few customers so there was no reason for the slow service.

We don't like posting negative reviews. The restaurant business is brutal and anyplace can have an off night. However, there were some real problems with our recent dinner. Ate there on a Saturday night when the place was busy, but not packed, and every table in our section had to wait forever for service, drinks and food. Our entree arrived an hour + 10 minutes after ordering. In the interim, I had to wait about 30 minutes to get a cocktail, and our bread wasn't refreshed. In fact we felt abandoned - no apology, no check-in, no bowl of chips or extra bread while we waited. And no warning about the expected delay. Again, we understand things happen but a nearby table was offered 2 rounds of drinks on the house for their wait. Another table had a manager visit to apologize. Another was given their food to go after the long wait. In our case - no acknowledgement except a brief apology when our entrees finally arrived. We certainly don't expect to be comped, or to receive any extras, but the inconsistency in how various tables were treated was noticeable. It shouldn't be too difficult to establish a consistent policy when things get off schedule. Thank you.Hello - My sincere apologies for the lack of consistency. As a leader in the industry we strive to be the best at great food, great service, and creating that one special memory while dining with us. We will apply your constructive criticism into our front of the house training to be very transparent with everyone moving forward. Hopefully we have the opportunity to serve you again and make it a special experience. Once again, I apologize for the service and thank you for the observations.

Great place to relax, watch boats go by, and listen to live music. Scott & Keifer played the day we were there, and they were great! The food is always high quality and very consistent each time we go there. Wait staff is always right on the ball. Our favorite place to go when we're at the lakes.

We have eaten at Maxwells in the past and have always been pleased. A nice menu with pasta, seafood and beef entrees. This time of year the new waitstaff are still figuring things out. We had reservations on a Thursday night and were warmly greeted and seated promptly. Our waiter was on the spot and brought us water and drinks in a timely fashion. Then, things kind of fell apart. We had hoped to have a leisurely dinner and spend some time enjoying the view of Lake Okoboji. We ordered appetizers, salads and entrees. The salads came out rather quickly and they said they were checking on the appetizer. Then when the entrees came the appetizer came with it. This is usually a kitchen problem. Hard to blame the food runners who are told to take this to table âXâ. Overall the food was excellent, my wife had the scallops and pappardelle pasta and I had the rack of lamb. We took the appetizer home. Weâll still go back to Maxwells, but will give our waitstaff a little more guidance on timing. We could have refused the salads and insisted on the appetizer first, but our entrees might have been held under a warmer for who knows how long. Okoboji is a tourist town and the restaurants count on high school and college students for staff. They take a little time to get the hand of things.

Really bad experience this time a great place we have gone to for years. New server never checked on us once for drink refills or how the food was. She was too busy cleaning the other tables and bagging the garbage. The other server was too busy talking to her friends at the bar and the other server was having a smoke outside. It's Saturday night ladies serve the few patrons that you did have. Bummed!
