History and monuments dot this landscape almost as often as the golden farmlands. Learn about America’s 31st president at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch. In northeast Iowa is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a group of prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds. This part of Iowa is also home to the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage. The 37-county region tells the story of American agriculture, agribusiness and farm life and is affiliated with the National Park Service. In addition, there are five national wildlife refuges here.
If you love history, imagine seeing the Amana Colonies, consisting of seven historic villages in 1855 by German immigrants as a religious communal society. Here you can also buy antiques, hand-woven baskets, furniture and clocks and locally made wine and beer. In Ames, take the family to see the Christian Petersen Art Museum, a newer structure that exhibits works of art by Christian Petersen and contemporary artists. You won’t want to miss the state capital of Des Moines, home to Blank Park Zoo with its naturalistic exhibits and more than 800 animals from five continents. You also should enjoy the Brenton Skating Plaza, an outdoor family entertainment venue.

We had a really great three night stay there recently. The house is absolutely beautiful. I literally felt like I had stepped back in time. Simon and his wife are great hosts. Very friendly and personable. He did a great job filling us in on the history of this house. The breakfasts were amazing!! We met some really nice people on our short stay. We stayed in Anna’s room only because it was the only room available when I booked. The room itself is very comfortable. The only drawback was the shower or maybe I should say lack of. However, we were fully aware of this when we booked so it was no surprise. They had some really nice books available for reading in the parlor and a mini kitchen for guests to use. It came in handy for warming up our leftovers. It was hard to leave such a beautiful and comfortable home.

Noise every where in the public areas on main floor - typical casino. Title says everything regarding the room. Would stay here again if in area. The balance of this is satisfying the nonsense of the review being a minimum of 200 characters. This is a wonderful Victorian Style bed and breakfast that is reasonably priced, close to the downtown area and all the major sites of historical Debuque Iowa. The Hosts are very knowledgeable and it is evident that they love don't just manage the property. They are still in the process of restoration but they definitely care about doing it right and keeping the house true to the period. The breakfast was tasty and very well presented (more than enough to fill you up). Our room had stained glass, beautiful woodwork, a fireplace and a private bath. It was laid back and very restful. My wife and I will definitely stop by again when traveling through.

We wish we could've stayed longer. We had to visit West Point, Iowa for a purchase. I looked around for a place to stay and this one has great reviews. We understand why now. Our drive took longer than expected because of severe thunderstorms. The hotel called us twice, mostly just to check on us. They really do care. They made sure we knew how to enter the hotel and our room at such a late arrival time. I was afraid the rooms might be dated. They are not. They seem to be recreations of the vintage style, with antique furnishings but fresh wallpaper and such. Everything is in good repair. The room was cooled, waiting for us to arrive. We would be happy to visit the area again. Don't miss The Fort Diner for a quick, inexpensive, delicious breakfast. The loaded omelet, and hash browns, with toast, was just $5. We tipped well.

Perfect location. Quaint setting with wonderful guests and great amenities. It was a little noisy, especially near the stairway, but that's expected given the age of the building. We plan to return with a few other couples to make it a "thing".

We stayed at Mont Rest Oct 9th-Oct 13th, 2021. The Inn is beautifully furnished in antiques. The food is awesome. Of course breakfast is included every morning and is hot and delicious. In addition we did the murder mystery dinner and the steak lili is amazing. The murder mystery was so fun and entertaining. We also did the wine paired dinner and it was the fanciest dinner I have ever had. It was also served on very beautiful antique china. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you have anything you might need or want. Highly recommend.

We spent our wedding night at the Redstone 34 years ago, and it was spectacular then. We have been back several times since, and it was generally well maintained and an enjoyable place to stay. This weekend, we were so sad to see how far it has deteriorated. Water damage to the bathroom vanity, wallpaper taped down in several places, a layer of dust on the quilt, musty smell in the room, dusty fake plants... We still slept well, and the main part of the house, including the sitting parlor, is pretty. The host was gracious. Same simple, but lovely hot breakfast both nights. Loved the fresh fruit, coffee, and pastries. Sure hope someone with a love for architecture/history, and money to invest, buys this grand dame and brings her back to life!
