Runcible Spoon Cafe and Restaurant

While we were visiting Bloomington,The Runcible Spoon came highly recommended and it lived up to the recommendation. The restaurant is in a renovated home, with eclectic decor. There's outdoor seating in nice weather and inside seating, which takes advantage of every inch of space. The place is busy and servers are attentive and helpful. The food is the star with a focused menu and everything prepared perfectly. The weekend special offers you choice of 2 eggs, French toast or pancake, and bacon or sausage. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and topped with cheese. The pancake is huge - and delicious. It had a slight crispy exterior and fluffy inside. The omelette was flavorful. The coffee treats are delicious and beautifully prepared. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and look forward to our next trip!

Village Deli

Reviewed By bornthatway_traveler

The Village Deli has served as Bloomington’s most famed breakfast joint for a very long time—I don’t memorize dates, but it had to have existed before 2000. It survived a destructive fire and continues to survive weekend masses and hundreds of all types of tourists. I assume some food magazine has featured it somewhere at some time. Village Deli is an incomparable place to fuel up in the morning, because it is NOT a Denny’s or IHOP but it’s not a small cafe either. There is no spot like it anywhere in Bloomington as far as I can tell...it is hearty, affordable, and a must-eat for all in Bloomington. As with many other establishments in Btown, I have paid countless visits over decades. I’ve obviously had vastly different servers here, but Brandon delivered very efficient, professional, friendly service on my most recent experience. I am college-aged, but I am an extremely atypical college kid (lol), so I tend to notice service at some restaurants to resemble more of a “stereotypical” college vibe than others possibly. The Village Deli definitely has that college vibe in its staff, which can be good; the service can be hit or miss, however, so keep that in mind for folks troubled by that. Generally, do not get me wrong: the waitstaff are outgoing and attentive!Special emphasis on the food, can’t forget! The institution is renowned for what have to be the largest pancakes by area in the entire city. Probably the entire state. I wish I took pictures...I’m so used to taking it for granted! They come in servings of single cakes, they are THAT big. All menu items are freely customizable, so rightfully so, there are options for what to add in your pancake (I am likely notorious in the kitchen, and they can identify me, for ordering extra chocolate chips ). Waffles, toast, eggs, potatoes (which I will force myself to try next), and various classic breakfast meals are available. There are plenty of generous, fresh, delicious choices. I can really only recommend the pancake, but I have considered topping a waffle with fruit on several visits before...don’t let me encourage you to eat unhealthily! All in all, I very much recommend Village Deli for everyone in the mood for a unique, Btown breakfast! Locals will ignore me because they know about it, but travelers not from the area, take note! Before I forget, the value received for your meals is very reasonable, and again, the portions are huge compared to your bill. Free WiFi and a walkable Kirkwood location should be noted. Recommended!

Stopping at Stefanos was a real treat. The cob salad was very fresh and well presented with a whole bunch of ingredients This restaurant is a well kept secret in Bloomington. Has breakfast lunch and dinner. Open til 7pm. Has a very wide variety of many different items on menu. Located on lowest floor of downtown mall Fresh home made chicken soup. U name it and seems Stefanos has it. Parking is a problem but if u enjoy looking thru a mall that has been top notched refurbished by Cook with nothing spared to bring it to highest level of beauty.

La Vie En Rose

An authentic French cafe just two blocks from the square in Bloomington. Enjoy fresh quiches, croissants, and other delicious French pastries! Stop by on the weekend to grab a freshly baked long baguette, or check out our website to pre-order whole cakes

Reviewed By cheesqueen

Bloomington now has two French restaurants within a block of each other. La Vie en Rose is more of a cafe/bakery and is open with much more regular hours. After a couple visits, I haven’t found anything I really love, but it’s the sort of place I’m willing to keep trying. Baked goods include fresh baguettes (full-sized and personal), croissants, macarons, and a variety of miscellaneous desserts. The large baguettes must be baked with a starter because they taste somewhat sour to me, but the minis are better. The croissants are very buttery but a bit heavy. Lunch options are fairly limited—quiche, soup, charcuterie, and savory loaf (light bread with savory additions like pesto and olives). The quiche slices are very large, but the rest of the dishes aren’t. With entree, drink, dessert, and tip, lunch cost about $20–a little high for everyday but worth it for something special.
