Things to do in Melrose Park
When my father took my brother and I to the movies on Wednesday afternoons when we were growing up in the 1940s and 1950s, we'd always stop to eat at a hamburger joint afterwards. "Greasy spoons" is what my father called them. They also had another common characteristic. They were operated by World War II veterans. My father always chose those places to eat because, as a war veteran himself, he loved to swap old war stories. My brother and I just loved the burgers. Harlo Grill in Melrose Park, east of the intersection of West North Avenue and North 25th Avenue, is a "greasy spoon" without the war stories. And the guy who's working the grill didn't land at Normandy or fight at Bastogne. Opened in 1953, it's a no-frills, no-thrills. short-order, 24-hours-a-day, counter-and-grill operation that has made a reputation out of its signature patty melt on rye and chocolate banana malted milk shake. The menu, such as it is, is on the wall, not on the Internet. Eight out of 10 customers order double or bacon cheeseburgers with grilled onions, usually with a side of''/ cheese fries or chili cheese fries. My father would love this place. It has thrived in good economic times and survived in bad economic times as many local businesses have closed or moved. But Harlo has maintained its blue-collar mentality and changed with the times, still offering all-day breakfasts of skillets, omelets and waffles to truck drivers and burritos and quesadillas to its fast-growing Latino community. But I'll settle for the double cheeseburger with grilled onions. So would my father.
