Looked for a lunch spot with other than burger and have a beer. There were several "family restaurants" and a few taverns (burgers and fries) so we stopped at Applebee's. Typical chain food. Servers polite and efficient. Beer selection above average. Stir fry was good. Price as you would expect.

No menu. The waiter had it in his head and did good job with all of it. The men had steak and were very pleased. I had chicken Oscar and it was delicious. Never have had better. Excellent service throughout the evening. Personable waiter. The meal was top notch.

Having been gone from the area for several years, I missed Raymond’s in Sesser, IL. And like Robinson’s Steakhouse, now on the bottom of Rend Lake, it is gone. Lamenting that loss, friends told me about Jack Russell’s located in downtown Benton and a block east of the Square (the Square is a round-about of the Courthouse) Raymond’s tavern was well known in this area for their fish. The batter was more tempura than meal and flour! Just a big hunk of fish on a bun with all the fixin’s you want!Thank you Jack Russell’s for picking up that fish concept. Do enjoy visits with friends when at Rend Lake or the trip just for fish!If camping at Rend Lake do the short drive into town and you will be very pleasantly surprised with their menu offerings and full service bar and Patio and most friendly greetings! Likewise if you are cruising I-57 get off and give yourself a treat of So. IL

I didn't know but I came in right before they close and yet everybody was cheerful and helpful and made me a smoothie and a salad quickly with a smile. I got an acai Pomegranate Smoothie which comes out a really weird color but is so tasty while seeming healthy. The salmon Caesar was a lot of lettuce with Parmesan and tomatoes and of course salmon with a pepper Caesars dressing. The dressing is what made the whole thing. I don't know if it's homemade but it seems higher quality than most Caesar dressings I come across. The only issue I had is they give me my water in a styrofoam cup

We have been here before when we have travelled through the area. The service is always good but sadly the atmosphere has not improved much. That aside the food is usually very good. One of us had a filet and two scallops - the scallops were delicious, cooked to perfection as was the filet. The other person had a rib eye steak, cooked to temperature and a good flavor but not a good cut of steak, it had a lot of grizzle. We each ordered mushrooms to compliment our steak and were charged two dollars each for very few mushrooms. The bread that was served with dinner was stale.Salad was average and dessert was good. Parking can be an issue here. When I went to the bathroom, the hall is very unfinished and there were three people coming down the hall and discussing whether or not they should stay for dinner. It was their first time and they were not impressed with the lack of décor but I told them to stay, the food was worth it. I hope they enjoyed their evening. We will come back next time we are in the area, but we wish they would finish their renovations. Also there is no good place to wait for your table. We wish we had the funds to finish the renovations too.. unfortunately we’re just a couple of young people trying to survive in an economically depressed area with a small, private business, in a building that is over 100 years old and has been neglected for many years before us. We just put in all new kitchen equipment, had to remortar the front of the building, got all new lighting for the downstairs dining room, and put on a new roof in 2018. Money is being invested, just not in ways that you may notice. The floors are next on the long list of needed improvements. We’re really lucky to have a supportive local community that stand behind our efforts. We’re doing the best we can with what we have! Passion can only take you so so far. Thanks for giving us a chance!

Mike's Drive In

When I travel, I love these types of places. Mom and Pops with some considered being dives. This experience was very underwhelming and quite disappointing. My family and I were travelling through town heading to another restaurant when we saw this place on the side of the road. Mike's got our attention as a hometown favorite drive in restaurant. We literally made a U-turn and went back to try it. Our server was a high school girl who was very friendly which got us off to a great start. She recommended the home made root beer. Glad she did as it was good. I asked her what the restaurant was known for and I should have listened more carefully to her response. She said "we aren't known for anything". She was right again. We ordered 2 cheeseburgers, a tenderloin, onion rings, fried cauliflower and fried mushrooms. Where do I start? Both of our burgers were very small, dried out and had no special flavor. The tenderloin, cauliflower, mushrooms and onion rings were obviously frozen from a bag out of the freezer. Certainly not what I expected from Mike's Drive In, especially when the ticket was almost $30. I guess I should go ahead and tell you that we also waited almost 40 minutes from the time we ordered to get our food. This was definitely not a good experience. Of note, the staff was friendly, which made me decide to give more than one star.
