Wood Fired Pizza, Pasta & Spirits.
I make semi-annual trips to Carbondale, this was my first time eating at Fat Bottom Bettys. I was there on a Thursday night, first night of baseball playoffs. I had the Thursday night lasagna special at $9.99, plus an extra $1 for the caesar salad. Both were large portions of well made food. I especially liked that they had both sweet and usweet iced tea, all the other places in town were unsweet only. The place was clean, the service was prompt. The bartenders and servers were friendly. My phone had suggested I eat there, and told me it was nearby. The building color is dark and the signage is minimal. I was in the hotel for a day before I saw the place. I said locals at the top, but there were no speical events in town so I suspect locals were everywhere. I did not see any guests from the two nearby hotels.

Your average hometown burger joint. Nothing that really stands out but nothing that will make you wanna leave besides the early morning service. The breakfast is mediocre and trying to get the attention of a waitress is almost impossible. Dont be in a hurry if you decide eat here

Energy, Illinois, is a tiny village of 1,145 people located on Route 148 south of Herrin in southern Illinois. What is it famous for? Nesler's Polar Whip, a fast-food, cash-only, open 10-to-4 daily restaurant that dates to the 1950s. The Whip, as it is referred to by locals, is a tradition in these southern Illinois surroundings, famous for its double cheeseburgers and fries. My father used to call these kind of places "greasy spoons" and they usually were owned and operated by World War II veterans. There used to be three or four of them on the South Side of Chicago and my father would take my brother and I to one of them every Wednesday after going to a movie, usually a western or a World War II film like Battleground or Iwo Jima. We called them all "shoot-'em-ups." But we always looked forward to going to one of my father's favorite greasy spoons. The hamburgers were always tender and juicy and the fries were hot and crispy. That's the way it is at the Whip. Order a double cheeseburger and double BBQ sandwich with fries. The menu also includes onion rings, chicken strips, mushrooms, fried pickles, triple burgers, triple cheeseburgers, double hot ham sandwiches, double hot dogs and fish, chicken and steak sandwiches. Wash it all down with a cherry Coke or two. Nearly everybody who walks into the Whip seems to be on a first-name basis. Which only proves if you put out a good product, the people will keep coming back for more. Makes me wonder how they celebrated at the Whip when Herrin won the state high school basketball championship in 1957.

Food still generally good. The drive through is very slow and like previous visit need to check food order for accuracy prior to driving away. Not good for other customers on line, but better to find a wrong order before driving away.

One of Southern Illnois' only fine dining restaurants, located in one of Herrin's historic 120 year old homes. Full bar and winelist available.
No menu. The waiter had it in his head and did good job with all of it. The men had steak and were very pleased. I had chicken Oscar and it was delicious. Never have had better. Excellent service throughout the evening. Personable waiter. The meal was top notch.

Outstanding 5 star restaurant located just minutes north of Carbondale at the new Walker's Bluff Winery. This is now the finest restaurant in Southern Illinois!
Just had our daughter's wedding and reception here and we just can't say enough good things about this place. From the first meeting to the Sunday following the event, the staff was friendly, courteous and accommodating. Food was excellent. They made some specialty drinks for us since it was St. Patrick's Day to add to the festivities. Catered to our younger guests with chicken fingers and fries. Kelcey and Kathy went above and beyond to make sure this day was perfect for our daughter. Our guests could not stop raving about the cave and tasting room.
