Idaho Campgrounds | Places to Stay in Idaho

April 18, 2023 Leonarda Pillsbury

A mixture of forested mountains, alpine peaks, wildflower meadows, deep river canyons, and high plains deserts, Idaho is a paradise for golf, skiing, fly fishing, and river rafting. Boise, the capital, is the state's largest city and airline hub. North of Boise are golf, lake, and ski resorts from McCall in the south to Sandpoint and Coeur D'Alene in the north. East of Boise are the ski slopes of Ketchum and Sun Valley. East of Sun Valley are Craters of the Moon National Monument, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, and the small town of Island Park just across the border from Yellowstone National Park. Boise's Basque Museum and Cultural Center reflects having the largest Basque population in the U.S. Reflecting Idaho's diverse heritage, near the Idaho Historical Museum in Boise's Julia Davis Park is the Idaho Black History Museum's chronicle of the slave York who served the Lewis & Clark Expedition. After a family visit to the Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey and an outdoor performance at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, the next stop after Boise is likely to be Payette Lake in McCall or Sun Valley and Ketchum. About 100 miles north of Boise, past Cascade Lake, McCall takes you to the shores of Payette Lake. Go golfing, fishing, hiking, biking, waterskiing, sailing, boating, or whitewater river rafting. Ski or snowshoe Brundage Mountain or Tamarack Resorts, as well as Ponderosa State Park in winter. Ice skate year-round at Manchester Ice & Event Centre. About 450 miles north of Boise, there are resort lakes near skiing and golf at Coeur d'Alene, Hayden Lake, and Sandpoint. Golf, tennis, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, rafting, and hunting are popular in Sun Valley and Ketchum. Sockeye salmon may no longer do much spawning in Redfish Lake, but the boating and mountain scenery in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area make the short trip north to Stanley worthwhile. When the snows come the whole family will head for the slopes of Soldier Mountain, Bald Mountain, Dollar Mountain, or the Sun Valley Resort. A tiny forested town of about 250 people, Island Park has a large reservoir with fishing and boating, as well as Henry's Fork of the Snake River for fly fishing. It's only 15 miles from Yellowstone as well.

Wander Camp Yellowstone

First timers

By all intensive purposes, it could be a great experience. I've seen others and this does not compare. The ride up the camp is very, very bumpy and dirt road. We were grateful we had an SUV and felt bad for those that drove up in cars. The host who greeted us was very nice. In fact, his car was parked up front near the sign/entrance. The bathroom facilities that appeared on the web site are not what is on this site. There was an elevated facility/trailer that had six individual/small rooms that had a toilet (think airplane), small sink (just big enough to wash your hands and nothing else) and shower stall with curtain. Three pegs on the wall. No place to store extra rolls of toilet paper - so be sure you check this before using. Garbage cans were overflowing and because it rained the two days/nights we were there - this was filled with dirt. No one on site to maintain/clean toilet/showers. There was a line both mornings. The second morning the drive out/in was so bad that individuals were driving on the grass to bypass the potholes/small ponds that developed. Rather placing pea gravel, which driving an SUV - no traction. They should use RCA and compact it. The tent itself, it was cold and a dew developed on our stuff/blanket. So overall damp inside the tent. I don't know, if you are into this, good for you this is the place to be. Just wasn't our cup of tea. Bring clorox wipes to wipe down the bathroom. Other people are not so clean in their habits and you will get some surprises. It was an experience. But I wouldn't repeat it. For a bit more, I could have stayed down the road at the hotel with a private bath.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights. It was cute and mostly clean (I say mostly because our socks captured some hairs that seemed to be dog hairs). We would have enjoyed it more if we had slept comfortable. Our mattress was VERY uncomfortable. I would say it was an older mattress because it was obviously more worn on one side then the other. As if that was the side mostly used. My boyfriend ended up having to sleep on the couch so I could sleep on the lower side, so I wouldn’t feel somewhat lopsided while sleeping and could be more comfortable. When I replied to the email from the manager asking how our stay was, I explained this to him. He came off as being offended and upset with me about my response, saying they had “just spent $30k on new mattresses” the previous month and that you “can’t find a bed that works for everyone”. I feel IF this was true, they were not quality mattresses due to it being so worn in just one month. Unfortunately I will not stay there again due to his response and our uncomfortable sleeping conditions.

Great place to stay

We enjoyed our 4 nights stay in their cabins with our 3 year old daughter. She loved to interact with their horses and I am sure their horse riding packages would be fun. 2 things to remember: Their office closes at 8 so call them beforehand in case you are reaching late. They will leave the keys for you outside the office. Also, You need to bring your own supplies for food, even coffee. Rooms had a rustic feeling and were pretty spacious for small family. It’s a good 40 miles from West Yellowstone in case you are planning to visit. We visited everyday of our stay and had no problems with the drive. Staff is helpful. It was a good stay for us. Enjoy!

Camp Coeur d'Alene

Camp Coeur d'Alene is a destination campground with lake access into Lake Coeur d'Alene. Wild and remote, yet only 15 minutes from the heart of Coeur d'Alene. Resident wildlife sets the scene with the lake and mountain for a backdrop. Cabins, RVs and tents make up our campground along with many other amenities.

Nice Spot in Coeur d'Alene

Reviewed By Annabell O

Being on a long camping road trip, we enjoyed our stopover at Camp Coeur d'Alene - our son especially liked taking a quick dip in the pool. The staff was very friendly. The only drawback was how little room there is between the RV campsites, providing very little privacy. We were traveling with a 12' Aliner pop-up trailer, so sadly the tent sites weren't an option. Bathrooms and showers were very clean - we would stay here again if in the area.

We stayed at the RV park for 6 nights and after the first 2 nights of no sleep due to loud diesel motors running on two sides of us, we complained about the noise and no response from front desk folks. It then rained on and off over 2 different days and the entire park was under water. I think they built it below the flood plain and our site was under water by 8 inches, the dog walk area was under water by ankle deep and after I ruined 2 pairs of shoes, I walked up to the front desk again and they said that they couldn't do anything to raise the level of the site. That they would add more gravel to the gravel pad after we depart, lot of help for the remainder of our stay. The Cable TV connection never worked, the pool was closed, even though weather had been in the 80's prior week, the sauna didn't work, the hot tub was cold... I asked if they could take care of us somehow and they said that all of my concerns were due to "acts of god" and that they knew they had elevation problems, but nothing they could do. No credit, no compensation and no sorry...just tough luck! Not a very compassionate place and all about the money. Don't think this is any way to treat customers. I've stayed at much nicer places at 1/3 the cost. This place is high price for what you get and did not feel like a resort with all of the full-timers all around the perimeter
