The chef really knows how to grill fish to perfection. The only problem is many of the tastiest fish are seasonal. Ask the chef what's best, and he'll fix it for you. Tsubodai is excellent here. Hakkaku is good if they have big ones in about February. Onigiri rice balls are good. I heard a rumor they went out of business.

This kaitensushi is located approximately 15 minutes from JR Wakkanai station. It is popular with many locals with many people patronizing it when we were there. The nigiri sushi sizes are fairly small with thin cuts of fresh fish slices. A specialty of this restaurant is the whole anago (braised sea eel) nigiri sushi which is served on top of two pieces of rice. Another popular dish is the tamago (egg) nigiri sushi which is lightly flamed and served with mayonnaise on top. Probably the best tasting dish here is the chawan mushi (steamed egg custard with chicken, shrimp and oyster).Prices are quite reasonable and reflective of what you would expect to pay at a similar kaitensushi in Japan.

It's just a Japanese dining room type restaurant. The menu is mostly uninteresting, and the food is mediocre. The only dish I can even remember eating here was something floating in a bowl of melted butter.

This seasonal restaurant is known for it's scallop ramen. The scallops used are actually pulled right out of the water in Soya. The menu is small, but the walls are lined with the signatures of famous people who have come through and liked what they saw.Warning: This restaurant is seasonal, so when the weather gets cold and the tourists dry up it closes.

Dining at Takechan, you can taste the most popular Wakkanai Japanese dishes with good quality and reasonable price. My recommendations are: crabs, kinki (valuable and famous fish in Hokkaido), Wakkanai beef steak and sashimi. Located in city area with easy assess, walking distance from Wakkanai JR station.

This was one of the best meals we have ever had of any type of food. The restaurant shares premises with a seafood packing and processing warehouse and specialises in Robatayaki. We were given a full tour of everything possible with seafood and a grille. We arrived back in Wakkanai from a day walking across Rebun Island. tired and very hungry, and decided to find this restaurant recommended in a Chinese guide book. We walked South from the ferry terminal on the very dark seaward side road beside some very closed warehouses, and just when we thought we were in the wrong place saw a flashing sign announcing the end of the wharf area and the restaurant, which sits at the South side of the main wharf, a good 15 minutes from the JR station. We arrived unsure whether this really was it, and met a suited man leaving the restaurant. He assured us we were in the right place. This proved to be one of the owners. The other owners were sitting inside the now empty restaurant at the end of a hard day sorting and selling fish. We chose three Robatayaki sets. The staff had to confirm this a couple of times, and we later realised why. The sets are huge, and run through the whole selection of local produce, from seafood to steak, all cooked in front of you on an open grille. The prawns and crab legs were huge and the local steak was the softest and most delicious weâve had in long, long time. We left the restaurant totally stuffed, and gave well deserved thanks to the staff and owners for an excellent evening. Superb !
