PROS: - A MUST for soba-lovers: superb noodles and dipping broth, even the soba-yu. - Choose between two types of soba noodles (inaka or sarashina), or have half and half. - Reasonable pricesCONS: - Lines at lunchtime- Chaotic kitchen- Menu only in JapaneseBuckwheat thrives in the cold climate of Hokkaido, so it's not unusual to find excellent soba restaurants here. But even for Hokkaido, Kakitsubata is exceptional. For most dishes you can choose between two kinds of noodles: inaka and sarashina. The rustic inaka noodles are thicker and darker, made from soba kernels with less of the outer layers polished off. The refined sarashina are thinner and lighter, made from highly polished soba kernels. My personal favorite is the inaka, but both have the firm texture and nutty aroma you expect from excellent soba. The soba is grown in frigid Horokanai, the most famous soba town in Hokkaido. Recommended: Orishi soba (850 yen), a plate of cold noodles garnished with bonito flakes and served with ground daikon, wasabi and cold dipping broth. Kenchin soba: Two kinds of soba noodles served with a hot, slightly thickened dipping broth seasoned with dried shiitake mushrooms. The service is friendly, but although the kitchen is large, it's chaotic. It took a bit longer than expected for our orders to come. They need to refine their system. The menu is only in Japanese. The seating area is small relative to the kitchen size, so you might find a line if you arrive at lunchtime on the weekend. But if you're in the area and not in much of a hurry, DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!

Great Seafood and Teshoku lunch sets. The food is well made and fresh. Lunch sets are really large. I've had the Tonkatsu lunch, Curry and rice, Fish of the Day and many other sets. I have not been disappointed with any of them. Great place for lunch or dinner. The downstairs of the restaurant is also a fresh fish market, with excellent options for buying locally caught seafood.
