Daunted by the expensive buffets of Rusutsu resort we sent our most intrepid traveller through the driving snow in search of food. Luckily he found cleared sidewalks, little traffic and about 4 small restaurants popular with locals. This restaurant is the last in the little enclave before you hit the big lunch time diner. Its traditional Japanese. Most seating is on tatami but there is also one table. We had excellent hot pot, scallops in butter and cheesy potato goodness. The waiter spoke good English and both he and the chef did their best to accommodate our group which had some allergies and a vegetarian. Excellent value for money.

We had dinner two of the five nights we stayed in Rusutsu. First, because most of the family loves izakaya dishes, but second, we also have a young picky eater. Kakashi has such a huge menu, there were items everyone could enjoy.Every dish we ordered, and we ordered many, were excellently prepared. We also ordered the largest sushi platter they offered - and all the items were fresh and delicious.I could go on and on about skewers, fried items, and yakiniku, but to save you time, everything was exceptional. All their food is prepared to perfection. The service at the restaurant is also exceptional. If you are looking for a fun and casual evening with great food, Kakashi is the place to go. Even if you are not a fan of some traditional izakaya items, there's enough on the huge menu to suit everyone's preferences.
Just down the road from Rusutsu ski resort, Miyuki has a basic one page menu . Having eaten there for three nights, I can vouch for the fact everything is freshly prepared and delicious, and very good value for money. The couple who run Miyuki are warm and welcoming . It seems to be quiet early in the evening, no reservation required, but later hungry skiers and travellers start to appear. A quick, satisfying Japanese meal which is easy on the budget.

I am about a month late in writing this review. And while staying at the rusutsu âDisneyland Hotelâ which is a culture shock, We looked for a nearby restaurant to have a great mealI scouted This restaurant from the trip advisor reviews and I went right after skiing to get a reservationWe got seated late, and though a month has passed and I canât even remember what I ate, this was definitely the best meal of the trip. The food was great, the seating is very cramped and small, however the overall experience was magical and our group of 3 loved every moment. This appears to be family run and there is so much pride in everything that they prepareA warning though, on the way out I bang my head on the entranceway which left me in discomfort on my plane ride home. A small price to pay but please Watch your head because all the doorways seem to be very lowThe ski hill was amazing and I will definitely return and go back to this place

Not only are the people wonderful and friendly, the food is fresh, hot, creative and tasty. The braised pork belly with sweetened soy sauce and the spicy grilled smoked chicken were probably our favorites, closely followed by the spare ribs and pastas. Delicious starting salads. Good wine list. What more can we say - went back for more a couple of days later.

We had our lunch at this cozy, seemingly family-run restaurant. Itâs located on the ground floor of a building, just next to the building entrance. We had curry tonkatsu, their specialty steamed pork (canât recall the exact name), tonkatsu belly and tonkatsu loin. Three words to describe: tender, juicy and yummy! The steam pork was a little too salty for my liking but my niece liked it!

This unassuming soba place serves excellent soba. The menu selection is small and simple. Love the simplicity of its preparation The place is always packed especially on weekends.

This shop is about 3-4 km outside the town of Makkari. About 20 minutes drive from Kutchan. It is a business that makes and sells many different types of tofu. You can see it being made through glass windows. There are about 30 different sorts of tofu that you can try. It seems to be very busy with local people buying baskets of different varieties- the soft smooth silky tofu, firm strong tasting tofu, some with black sesame, etc etc. There are also a whole range of fried tofus. And two creamy ones, made somehow with a mixture of tofu and milk. If you're passing by, its well worth taking a look and sampling the tofu. There are no seats. It's not a restaurant. The nearest toilets are in Makkari and are very clean and modern.
