Dating from at least the 10th century, today Kassel is most famous internationally as the home of Documenta, an every-five-years exhibition of modern and contemporary art. In the late 17th century Kassel received a large influx of Huguenot refugees from France. During the 1800s, it became the capital of the Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tale Route. In 1943, the city was virtually razed by British bombers, leaving few old sights, but the 18th-century Wilhelmshöhe Castle overlooking the city remains.

We ate here as a couple before visiting the opera. The menu was very rich and the dishes were extremely delicious (while also being huge). The staff was very friendly, nice and charming but also absolutely unobtusive and in no way superficial. The place itself is really beatiful and the atmospere is cozy without being too kitschy. We will definitely come here again; and next time we will also bring the kids because it seemed also very good for families.

If you are lost in food choice, then, don't waste your time and go directly to Gusto. Very nice atmosphere, busy, but not noisy. Somehow, I felt very much like at home and food is absolutely delicious (recommend their soups!!!). Quick orders, self-service and fresh food! What can be better?!

My husband and I were in Kassel for Documenta from Canada - our Airbnb host recommended this restaurant, and it was so good that we went twice during our very short stay in the city. The owner and staff are so kind, the food and beer is delicious. On a trip to Kassel my wife and I wanted pizza. We walked into San Marino and could also bring our dog with us. Ordered one small and one big Calzone. Took a little time, but our beer came very quick, and that was some good brew. Best Calzone in years. Nice restaurant and friendly staff.
