Havana Hostels hotel | Places to Stay in Havana

April 23, 2023 Sheron Bogner

A city trapped in time, Havana captures the imagination like no other. Faded glamour meets careful colonial-era reconstruction with a backdrop of irresistible color. Walk El Malecón, the walkway bordering the ocean; visit Old Havana and the Catedral de San Cristóbal; and listen for salsa music, open-air bazaars and parties that last all night.

Beautiful House, great area and wonderful host family..

If you are looking for a special hostel in Cuba.. Stay at Marquais de Liz.. The house is full of character.. The accommodation varies from a traditional room to studio apartments.. Everything is finished to a high standard. Each room has a small cooking area and a refrigerator.. Although not needed.. There are plenty of eating options within 5 mins of the house The best bit is, it's a family house. The family go the extra mile to help. The sons both speak English if you require that.. We have travelled all over the world and met many kind people.. However The Marquais family are top of our list for hospitality.. They will always have a place in our hearts.. 5 star stay.. Enjoy a chat on the terrace with the boys and their friends.. Or take a trip in "Herbie" 50 year plus car.. Not forgetting Stu the little dog who keeps an eye on everyone..

Casa La Floridana

Perfect Location but vary of the hard sell

Reviewed By Olivia B

We stayed there in Mid March 2019 for 3 nights. 4 of us all in separate rooms. I really did love this casa. High ceilings, Air Con, en suites, balconies. Very Clean, great showers - no problem with water temperature or water pressure. Breakfast was included and I very much enjoyed all the fresh food and juice every morning. Location was perfect as it was only 3 minutes walk to the revolution museum (very central) A lot of lovely restaurants and bars just meters away. The only negative I have is the hard sell that was put upon us by the day manager. We did feel like we were ripped of on 2 separate occasions. The first incident was when we need to exchange currency. I had changed my Euro to CUC at the airport and got a good rate. The manager brought my friends to the nearby hotel and got an awful exchange rate. 100 CUC in the difference. We were informed by another traveller that there was a currency exchange meters from the hotel that had the same rate as the airport. The second incident was when the manger told us he would book us tickets for the Buena vista social club. I realise that there are a lot of these type of venues around Havana - but we were shown a particular leaflet for one particular venue and we naturally assumed that was where we were going, We spent money In a taxi to this location only to be told that we were at the wrong venue. So we had to spend more money to get to the new location and were late to the show as a result. When confronted the manager the next morning, his answer was that the leaflet he has presented to us was just to give an idea what the club would be like. None of us where happy with this explanation, as at no point did he mention this to us. He never told us where the actually location was. Other than this I really enjoyed our stay as the casa la floridana. I'm giving the service a bad review only because of the manager, the other staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Casa Susana

Una experiencia maravillosa!

Reviewed By Raf V

It has taken me about 4 months to write this review, but not writing it would do these fantastic people wrong. So here it goes! We started planning our 2-week trip (24/8-9/9) to Cuba in January 2017 and the idea was to make a tour made up of Havana, Viñales, Playa Larga, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, possibly a town on the north coast and back to Havana. Don't worry, I am not going to bother you with all details... Based on some nice reviews, we booked our first 4 nights with Casa Susana in Centro Habana. The rest of the trip we'd book as we went along. Ariel and Susana, the owners, were so kind to arrange a taxi to collect us from the airport. One less thing to worry about! Having arrived at their home, we were greeted by 2 fantastic, lovely people. There was a bit of a language barrier, but all in all it worked out fine and it was largely compensated by their hospitality. In fact, we decided there and then that we would come back to the same casa on the last day of our trip, before flying out again. They even let us leave some stuff there (laundry and things we figured we wouldn't be needing)! No more excess luggage. After 4 days of sightseeing and loads of walking, it was time to set off to the next destination. As said, I'm not going into detail about the other places, but going to skip right to the stay in Trinidad. It was there that we first heard that hurricane Irma was making its way towards Cuba. Over the days, the cyclone grew to be the biggest and severest one ever recorded and we were kind of starting to get a bit worried about our return journey on 9/9... Seeing as to us it made sense to be close to the airport (hence, in Havana) before Irma would really strike, we got in contact with Susana and Ariel, asking if it would be OK to come back to theirs two days earlier as planned. Having met 2 lovely Spanish (Catalan :-)) girls on the way to Trinidad, we also asked if it would be OK if they'd join us. This was not a problem and arriving back in Havana, once again we were greeted by our lovely hosts. And then, along came Irma... So this was the fiercest hurricane ever recorded to date and Cuba had never been hit so hard either. Power was cut off on the 8th as a precaution the day before Irma would hit Havana, my birthday 9/9, and would not come back on until the 10th, when slowly parts of the city regained electricity. It took another day for all to be more or less restored. One cannot imagine the consequences of having no power at all for days in a row. The first days are OK (though extremely hot an humid without A/C this time of year), but after a while it becomes very hard to find any more fresh or frozen food. Susana and Ariel went to all lenghts to made our stay as comfortable as ever, though. Having seen our flight on the 9th cancelled and not being able to fly back to Belgium until the 14th, we cannot imagine a better place to have been stranded. Five extra days, which we've thoroughly enjoyed. Susana and Ariel, you are FANTASTIC! All our love, Raf and Nadine

Below expectations

Reviewed By ullabee

When I'd booked this casa I was under the impression that it was located in the Old Town, although I wondered why I could not find the address on the regular map (it seems that Hotels.com have now changed the map location and description). When the taxi dropped us, I was obviously disappointed to find myself so far from where I'd expected to be. It is almost a 30 minutes walk to the Plaza Vieja, partially through unlit, derelict streets. Bici drivers will try to scam you for CUC10-20 for this ride, be firm and you shouldn't pay more than CUC5, even at night. The room was another disappointment, not what we had expected from the description - the stuccoed ceiling was nice though. The room was very small, the mattress was totally worn out, the bathroom was tiny and required some acrobatics to get in and out of the shower, but there was always hot water. Oh, we had a balcony, wow! It was a tiny space between the house and the surrounding wall, like a cell! There seems to be something like a carpentry workshop in the same building, and the noise started from early morning until evening. There is simple dining room of sorts, and for breakfast they offered a basic one for CUC3 or a buffet for CUC5. Well, the buffet is of course no such thing, it is the normal breakfast that every casa offers for a similar price: juice, coffee, fruit, some bread and jam. The promised Wifi only worked on the balcony at the front of the house where it picked up the signal from the nearby park. There are some common rooms beautifully furnished with antiques, but far too stuffy for anyone to ever use them. The staff were mostly distant and not very friendly, apart from one young lady. We stayed in eight different casas and B&Bs during our three weeks in Cuba, and this was the only one that really disappointed.
