The Crocker House Country Inn

The whole experience was great. A nice quiet small intimate place. Greeted warming by the hostess and our waiter. Waiter was very informative about everything and was on top of everything without have to ask twice. Started with drinks (blueberry margarita), soft shelled crab for an appetizer, followed by veal with bernaise sauce and shrimp. The bread btw was also very good. All was very good, as a matter of fact. Decent amount of tender veal, sauce was good, but I could recommend this dish to be with either crab meat or lobster meat - just feel that this would be a better flavor with the dish (scallops wouldn't do it either). Bill was on the high end with the drinks and food, but it is one of those cases where we were not disappointed by the food at all or the wonderful service.

Morton's Moo

This place was recommended to us by my niece who lives in Ellsworth. Unlike some ice cream places around that serve Gifford's ice cream that you could just go buy at the grocery store this place makes their own and you can tell the difference. My only complaint would be that I decided to get Ginger Beer that they sell on tap. This is a soda made with ginger that is spicy and has a little kick. I had recently tried Maine Root Ginger Beer and loved it. This was Captain Eli's and it was flat as a pancake and awful. Not sure if it is just that bad or they were serving flat soda.

Franklin Trading Post

Reviewed By hanusa2 - McLean, VA

It's hard to find the Trading Post, partly because it doesn't even have a sign! I am including a picture of the Citgo gas station where the diner resides. It's the first gas station south of Franklin on Rte. 182. Karen welcomed us to choose any of the five tables and equal number of booths. We were able to make our 94-year-old mother comfortable at a round table, and soon our little group became a member of the community that gathers at the Trading Post regularly. (Think "pub" in Britain, or maybe "Cheers.") One of Karen's specialities is a blueberry pancake the size of a plate, smothered in butter and Mrs. Butterworth syrup. Bacon comes in crisp rashers of 4. The menu is limited but everything is good. You will feel that you are one of Karen's special guests. We look forward to future visits to the Trading Post!

Union River Lobster Pot

Reviewed By overthehill2

We ate here while on vacation back in 2011 and have been waiting to come back again. Glad to have made it back in September of 2017. It is almost worth the trip from Indy just to have dinner at Union River Lobster Pot. You have to eat here if you are in Bar Harbor or Ellsworth Maine. The service is excellent and they serve up some of the best lobster you will ever put into your mouth.

I don't like giving 5 star reviews because I think too many will give a 5 star when the establishment is not really deserving BUT this place deserves 5 stars.

We ate here the first night of our stay in the Trenton/Bar Harbor area and were not disappointed. The line is often long, but moves quickly. The staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming, and the food was terrific - great value for the money. We had whole lobster, corn, and lobster bisque. We picked out the lobsters ourselves and they were taken outside to be cooked upon ordering. Everything was fresh and cooked just right. Simple, high-quality food.

Salt Box

Reviewed By PodgeH - Manassas, Virginia

I wanted desperately to write an outstanding review for The Salt Box because our previous experience when they were in Hancock, Maine was excellent and a review of the present menu showed great promise.

The Salt Box is located just across the street from the harbor in Winter Harbor in a large post and beam building that was home to two previous restaurants. If you are fortunate enough to get a window table, there is an excellent view of the harbor. We arrived at 4:30 PM on a Wednesday and were promptly seated and presented with the menu and asked if we would like a drink. My wife order a Bombay Gin and Tonic while I had a Gibson with the same gin. Both were very good. We decided to plan our dinner in four courses, a shared appetizer, a second small plate, the entree, wine and dessert with coffee. Our cocktails arrived and almost immediately our first course arrived. Our first course was the Peekytoe Crab and Cheese Dip, which was served with warm baguette slices. This was very tasty but its quick arrival should have been a warning. Perhaps two bites into the dip and our Cheese & Charcuterie plate arrived. This consisted of Red Dragon Cheese, a Spreadable Salami and Olive Medley. Red Dragon Cheese is a Welsh Cheese containing ale and mustard seeds. The salami was cold and unspreadable and the Red Dragon Cheese was also cold. Both suffered by not being at something approaching room temperature. Again, a sign of the rushing that went into the presentation of the meal. As to the Olive Medley; well olives are olives, perhaps a half dozen ripe and green olives, nothing to write home about.

We were looking forward to our main courses, which arrived while every thing else was still on the table. My wife had the Homemade Semolina Pasta with Free Range Chicken and Tarragon Cream Sauce with Asiago Cheese. She said her entree was very tasty and the chicken was nice and tender. I love rabbit, therefore I ordered the Rabbit Pot Pie with Carrots, Parsnips, and a Flaky Pastry Crust. What the menu didn’t mention was there would be lots of carrots and cloves of garlic. By the time I got to the rabbit, my taste buds had been overwhelmed by the garlic-lots and lots of garlic and so the rabbit was just mystery meat, tender but with little taste.

Dessert-my wife had the Mount Desert Cocoa and Caramel Ice Cream while I had the Sour Cherry Sorbet, both were delicious. We also had freshly brewed coffee.

At this point let me say that during this whole meal, we were constantly rushed to finish a course, which we were never able to do without the next course arriving. This should have. been a leisurely, middle of the week dinner in a fine dining restaurant but we did not find that to be the case.

The tab: $208.01, including tip. Fine dining but rushed like a fast food restaurant.

Will we come again the next time we are in Maine? I’m not certain but perhaps we will since fine dining is a rarity in Downeast Maine. But we will certainly be more circumspect about what we order. Sorry Chef Mike Poirier but this was a bust.

Rustic flair perfect place for a lovely dinner. Daneen our waitress was very knowledgeable and needing a break from the Maine lobster she suggested the Ribeye. Absolutely mouthwatering one of the best we've experienced. The homemade mashed potatoes to go with it just topped it off. Definitely a must stop to enjoy quite times and enjoy excellence. We always stop at Tracey's for lobster rolls when we are driving by. They are freshly made to order and delicious. But not huge. One thing to mention is that if you don't ask for mayonnaise on your lobster roll it will come out with a toasted bun and plain lobster. No dressing. So we always has for mayo- even some extra on the side. We have eaten in our car or inside at a table and had good food each time.

Finn's Irish Pub

Reviewed By muddyhikinboots - Lagrange, Maine

We recently got the opportunity to stop in for lunch, but I have been going to Finn's for a long time. I love the atmosphere, with a delightful interior and fantastic live music when you're lucky enough to be there for it. The menu is great, with something for everyone and the specials are often some delicious off menu dishes. My favorite menu items are the Fish and Chips (homemade chips), The Reuben Sandwich is one of the best around (which is fabulous and usually the first thing I try at any restaurant offering it) and any of the burgers on the menu. I also particularly enjoy the Blackened Salmon Sandwich and dinner options. They cook a perfect burger here. And don't forget the dessert menu! The food is also very consistent which I always appreciate and their seasonal cocktail menu is always worth a look. The service there is always very good, and the staff are always warm and friendly without being overbearing. It can get busy so its always a good idea to call ahead or do reservations when available.
