Perhaps the dishes are adapted to local tastes or maybe I had wrong expectation however the food has nothing to do with Italian cuisine. Very disappointed especially because I was told there was an Italian Cook.

In the inner parts of Fredriksten fortress we find Vertshuset Curtisen, a small restaurant (46 seats) with a fantastic kitchen on historic ground.Curtisen has won prices for the best regional restaurant in the south-east of Norway, 2006 and 2008.Good local food, good wines and waiters with good knowledge give you a great experience in historical surroundings.Open all year, book in advance.
I will view this restaurant in comparison with other high-end restaurants. I have been dining on both one and two star Michelin restaurant. The chef Sebastian Engh presented us for a brand new menu. The menu did not stand back for any Michelin restaurant I have been attended. In addition to exquisite food, Curtisen has one of the cosiest and friendliest atmosphere in any restaurant I have been fortunate to visit. This was very much due to both the chef and the attentive staff. I highly recommendable restaurant.

Great place for pasta, fish and pizzas. They do takeaway for pizza, but recommend to eat at the restaurant. They are friendly and the restaurant has a modern look. A place to visit just for the food, or for a romantic evening.

Grensen is such a nice place! They are renowned for their delicious burgers, which are homemade and on the verge of experimental (brie, pesto and sweet chili sauce isn't something everyone puts in their burgers - BUT IT WORKS!), and the portion sizes are well worth the price! They are served with amazing fries, or wedges if that is to be preferred, and if you want something sweet for dessert, the milkshakes are a treat for the tongue! They are also kind enough to put a "little something extra" in the shakes if you're there in the evening! Still delicious!
The staff are friendly and helpful, and are always keen on knowing their guests are happy!
Grensen also have "themed" nights of the week, which spices up their reputation, with "Wine Thursdays" and "Record spinning Fridays".
10/10 would recommend.

The local with a heart. The Pub for music and meeting people. Wide selection of refreshments on tap.
This is a small pub in Halden, a very special place, and if you enjoy beers or drinks this is a must-do.
this is a place you can visit with friends or just by your self - the people here are very nice and often interested in talking to new people.
I usually end up sitting on all the tables, one at the time of course, when I go out.

fabian was a very nice experiment. The restaurant is furnished with very nice old furniture, and can remember elder people of days passed by.Walls are very nice decorated with paintings witch you also can purchase if you like them.
We ordered ovenbacked cod with a pea puree, which tasted exquisite.
Very polite waiter who look after you.
Sorry to say that we paid too much. The small piece of fish, was it 125 grams or 150 grams was not enough ,so we had to visit a sausage stand to get satisfied.
Nok 680,- for two plates with cod and two bears is simply more than we are filling to pay another time! If you have no hunger this place is advice able. After christmas the menu was very reduced, but this did not effect us as we had what we wanted but unfortunately more to look at than to eat!

A blustery cold wet evening, wandering round Halden in December dark, trying to find a restaurant that served vegetarian food and........ this restaurant popped out at us. It was just what we needed - warm, welcoming, smart casual, and not too expensive.
My wife and I both had the vege ravioli in a cream sauce. Delicious. My son had a steak, which was much to his liking.
We'd easily go back there again.

This is a micro-brewery situated under the old police headquarters in the southern part of the town, where the owner/brewer is not afraid of trying new tastes. In addition to offering their own produce, they also collaborate with other micro-breweries to offer an even broader range of tastes. Friendly staff, excellent atmosphere, Seating inside, and under tarpaulins outside. Recommended.
