Established in 1982 the Bonzai has been under new management since June 2015. Now known as the Bonzai Cafe, it still provides all the old favourites, great pizza's and some of the best coffee to be found on the Coast. We've been continuing to improve the range of food available and extended our evening dining menu. We pride ourselves on excellent house made meals and good old West Coast service. All our produce is freshly baked and prepared on site. We make all our own cakes, pies, breads and savouries.
The Four Seasons pizza sounded like a great choice since you could choose 4 ingredients to your liking. After eating some fabulous pizzas in NZ I did not expect to be eating one that used some kind of weird cheese and looked like they forgot the tomato sauce base. I did not eat much of it before leaving the Bonzai behind in search of some dinner elsewhere. Also, I am not sure why the servers have to be reminded of your order with such items as a glass of ice for your drink or a straw. Poor service, bad food - - - two clues that you should dine elsewhere.

Stopped in for lunch en route and found this in amongst the central area of Greymouth (not a lot here)
Very country atmosphere and hubby had a mixed roast which was impressive! As a coeliac there were no GF options which is always disappointing but after discussing I decided on nachos as they appeared safe. Delicious! Best nachos I've had in ages albeit a little different from the norm.
Don't be put off by the exterior go in for a delicious meal.

Pouring great ales and serving good wholesome food everyday from 12.00pm.
On a wet dreary day in Greymouth we found Speight's Ale House. It was near the hotel, and it looked “decent”
It fits the bill, it has an excellent range of (good) beers, straightforward, nicely good food, good sized portions, reasonable prices, and (very) helpful staff.
It's not going to win awards as the best restaurant in New Zealand, that's not what it about - it's good food at sensible prices.
What more can I add ?

Ali's is a relaxed, welcoming cafe with a great toy box. Check out our specials board - it changes daily. We are famous for our Pie Day Friday! Our menu is family friendly and affordable. Atomic is our coffee of choice.
We are open Mon-Sat 9am to 8:30pm (our kitchen is closed 3pm to 5pm)
Sunday 9am to 3pm.

Come and say hi!
Ali's is a modest, friendly restaurant that opens out onto Greymouth's new town squatre.Decor is comfortable, not upmarket. My brother and I ate there in March 2018 for his birthday. Wine list adequate but not exciting.
My smoked chicken pasta with sun-dried tomatoes was excellent, but my brother said the Thai seafood green curry he ate was one of the best dishes he had ever eaten, anywhere - and he has lived many years in Melbourne, Australia, with it's wealth of good restaurants. So, yes, if you are in Greymouth, try Ali's and you are unlikely to be disappointed.

located in Union Hotel
We stopped in while staying in Graymouth, during our drive. It's a buffet style and some items on the menu the cook to order. My medium rare steak was well done. On the bright side the price is right.

Came here on a whim after being disappointed with another restaurant around the corner.
Good service overall and good prices also. I am always keen to try new paneer dishes and tried a Shahi Paneer which was delicious. we also had bhaji’s and poppadoms to start which came with a good amount of sauce for each.
It’s a bit dated and could do with a little bit more modernising but nothing to worry about.
We finished with the mango ice cream that was actually only vanilla ice cream with a mango sauce - would have liked the actual flavour of the ice cream to be mango but still yummy.
Would recommend for anyone visiting.

Buccleugh's On High is a stand alone restaurant but part of the Recreation Hotel. Diners can eat in the restaurant but also have the option of eating off the restaurant menu in our lively and clean bar.
Visited with a small tour group for dinner and also breakfast while staying at Colerain Motel across the road. The group had a pre-dinner drink at the bar and all enjoyed themselves. I had steak for dinner and thought it excellent. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very good while the service was excellent. Staff were polite and professional. My continental breakfast the following morning was equally enjoyable although more subdued. A great place to dine.

The whole experience was chaotic from start to finish.
I asked what vegetables were in the Veggie soup and the answer "veggies" came back from the server. Not helpful.
Long story short: ordered food, restaurant had around five or six other people in it, waited half hour for food, saw others take their hot drinks, which were cold, back to the girl to remake...
Then I caught a glimpse of the kitchen as the door was propped open. Dirty, used tea towels strewn about the place and litter on the floor.
We left having paid 30aud for our food. There was no way I was eating anything out of that kitchen.
Felt like a bunch of amateurs were running this place. We went next door to another cafe.
