Tbilisi (English: /təbɪˈliːsi, təˈbɪlɪsi/ tə-bih-LEE-see, tə-BIL-ih-see; Georgian: თბილისი [tʰbilisi] ( listen)), in some countries also still named by its pre-1936 international designation Tiflis (/ˈtɪflɪs/ TIF-liss), is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of approximately 1.5 million people. Founded in the 5th century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, since then Tbilisi served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Between 1801 and 1917, then part of the Russian Empire, Tbilisi was the seat of the Imperial Viceroy, governing both Southern and Northern Caucasus.

This is the worst supposed restaurant I have ever visited. It involved struggling three hundred yards through rubble and demolition works to an underground damp ridden cellar. The paint was peeling off the walls and the one unsanitary loo was used as a store cupboard as discovered later after ordering. We sat outside near a rusting staircase. The waiter cajoled us into a larger plate than intended assuring us that they were proper crayfish and to buy thre combo sauces. Eventually despite the place being almost empty a heap of what looked like "Parktown prawns" a real pest in South Africa arrived. Littlle red knuckles. The waiter asked if we knew how to open them and then was unable to do so himself. The sauces had to be asked for and went unused. They were in revolting little mannikin dishes and no napkins were provided and I had to ask for a bowl of water to wash our hands in. It was reluctantly provided in what looked like a dog dish. The little red bricks of crayfish were totally inedible even if you could open them. It was alo the most expensive meal that we had in a week in Tbilisi and we were badly misled to go to such a revolting venue. The staff were also rude when we pointed out that the food was awful and the service abysmalTruly one of the most revolting culinary experiences of my life!!!Dear Mr Godalming,We remember well when you and your wife came here Wednesday evening two weeks ago, and since reading your review we have also studied the CCTV recording of your visit a couple of times to be sure of what really happened. Because of the vast quantity of misrepresentations and outright lies, we were shocked by your absolutely appalling review.Misrepresentation: You claim at the end of the review to have been “badly misled” to come here. No one made you come here; you arrived of your own free will. I can only assume that you feel let down by the 274 Trip Advisor members who reviewed us prior to you, 244 of which gave us a 5* review. Sorry, but they can’t all be wrong!Misrepresentation: You say that we are a supposed “restaurant”. If you Google for the definition of "restaurant", you will see that we qualify perfectly: "restaurant, noun, a place where people pay to sit and eat meals that are cooked and served on the premises." That is why Trip Advisor include us in their list of restaurants. Having said that, we see ourselves more as a bar and this is clearly stated on our outside branding, including the banner above the front door: "Bar: Drinks And Crayfish". By the way, we are also a highly rated bar on Trip Advisor :-DLie: Yes, it is true that parts of the old town are currently undergoing restoration works, however the road that you “struggled” down to reach us (per the CCTV) certainly isn’t one of them. No rubble, no demolition. We are very sorry that you had to “struggle” a whole 300 yards to reach us. Next time you are in Tbilisi, please let us know where you are staying, and we’ll be sure to open a branch right outside your hotel, to save you the effort. In the reviews that you presumably studied before making your decision to come here, you would have read about and seen photos of our authentic old-town ancient building half-cellar setting. Given that our building is located right in the heart of the historic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, I am surprised that you were surprised - I really don't know what you were expecting. Most of our customers love this charming district of the city and the authentic vibe that is offered in this area.Misrepresentation: We are in a half-cellar, which is very common in Tbilisi. We are not fully underground as might be inferred from your review. To access us, you merely need to go down five steps We have tons of natural day light and fresh air coming in through our windows and door!If you only want brand new shiny buildings at street level to be part of your dining experiences then I recommend that you don't go for food in Old Town city areas in future!Lie: Admittedly, our bathroom is not super spacious and does not have brand new shining tiles everywhere, but to describe is as “unsanitary” is a blatant lie. That word evokes thoughts of dirtiness, and perhaps just a hole in the ground with no paper or soap. On the contrary, our bathroom is always kept very clean, has anti-bacterial hand soap, is stocked with plenty of toilet paper and hand towels, and even has some of those nice smelling incense sticks.Misrepresentation: There were a couple of empty beer kegs stacked neatly in the corner of the bathroom, waiting to be picked up by our drinks supplier the next morning. The bathroom certainly isn’t a “store cupboard”.Misrepresentation: You asked your waiter, Edo, for a recommendation for the quantity of crayfish to order. You came at dinner time, and he asked if you were hungry, to which you said yes. He then correctly recommended the 1kg portion between the two of you, of course with the option to order more after should you still be hungry. (This is the live, uncooked, un-shelled, weight.) If you knew the quantity that you wanted, you wouldn’t have asked for a recommendation, and you absolutely weren’t cajoled by Edo into ordering more than you wanted.Truth: Edo did indeed assure you that they are proper crayfish, because they are. When you poked your head into the bar, you would have seen the crayfish happily swimming around in our purpose-built aquarium. We normally have two sizes of crayfish available, <50g and >50g. It was explained when ordering that unfortunately we only had the smaller size available on that day, and again, you would have seen this in the aquarium. So, having full knowledge of the size of the crayfish available you then proceeded to order anyway, so I don’t understand your anger about the size. Your crayfish were cooked fresh to order, and this obviously takes a little time compared to other establishments which maybe reheat old food or use microwaves.Lie: Edo demonstrated to you both how to de-shell the crayfish with no hesitation or problem whatsoever, and the CCTV footage confirms this.Simple misunderstanding: When ordering initially, you talked with Edo about our sauces, and said that you would confirm whether you wanted any after he brought the drinks. Once he brought the beers to you he asked you about the sauces, and you made a noise and a hand gesture which he interpreted as a “maybe”. I think that this was simply a miscommunication which we apoligise for, however I’m sure that you comprehend that although our local workers have a very good level of English, it isn’t their first/native language and sometimes misunderstandings can happen. After the cooked crayfish were brought to you, you pointed out that the sauces were missing, we understood the mistake, and then Edo delivered the sauces to the table as his highest priority.Lie: You complain that the sauces are served in “revolting little mannikin dishes”. The word that you are looking for is “ramekin” – the purpose of which is the cooking and presentation of food, including sauces. Our ramekins are white, sparkling clean, and the size of which varies according to the sauce portion size ordered. A large picture of the sauces in the ramekins is included on the sauces page of the menu. Nothing about them is revolting!Lie: A large stack of napkins was brought to your table shortly after your drinks, and certainly well before the food. To say that we didn’t provide them is again a lie.Misrepresentation: We provide large stacks of napkins to all tables for use during eating, and wet wipes are available at the end of the meal. And as noted above, our bathroom has a sink with anti-bacterial soap. Therefore we don’t, by default, offer a finger bowl. However, we have a couple of small metal bowls available specifically for the occasional time when a customer would ask for it, although I must say that you are the first customers to ask for this BEFORE starting to eat, which would have caught Edo off guard. Also, if in your opinion our finger bowls are like dog bowls, and you are dog owners, then I feel very sorry for your dehydrated dogs!Lie: “…crayfish were totally inedible even if you could open them.” Something which really surprised me when re-watching the CCTV of your visit is that, for reasons known only to yourself, you did not even ATTEMPT to open a single crayfish! (It makes me question your real motives for coming in the first place and then proceeding to leave the review that you did.) Further, the other table of customers sitting outside with you, plus the customers inside at the time you arrived certainly didn’t agree – they loved eating them and told us as much.Lie: “The staff were also rude when we pointed out that the food was awful and the service abysmal.” This lie really hurts - we pride ourselves on providing service which is attentive and friendly, something that you don’t always find in Tbilisi. Your wife was friendly and smiling the whole time that she was here, however you appeared irritated from the moment that you arrived. You frequently raised your voice to Edo, which he somehow managed to put aside to still smile kindly and treat you in a good way. And when my partner Daniel came to speak with you to ask sorry is there a problem, you proceeded to shout at him too. All of this was totally uncalled for and I would suggest that you try to treat any one who is providing you with service with the decency and respect that they deserve. Finally, we think that your comments about the price are in relation to the cost of “typical” Georgian food in Tbilisi? In this case, yes, our crayfish are more expensive than some Khinkali or a Khachapuri. However, compared to the cost of crayfish in other countries around the world, we offer some of the cheapest and this is often commented on by customers who are sad that they cannot afford crayfish in their own country. Of course, the price of our crayfish is determined by the price that we purchase them from our suppliers – if you know of a cheap supplier in Georgia then lets speak :)

I don't know why this place is #5 among cafes in Tbilisi. Breakfasts are very simple and average. I had the English breakfast with a cheap boiled tasteless sausage from the supermarket and canned beans. Cappuccino was too hot so I burned my mouth. Cakes are dry, stale and boring. The food doesn't cost it's money.

situated in old town, cafe Kala offers Georgian and European dishes. You'll like Eclectic design (in a good way) and enjoy live music in evenings (but not every day as I remember). I would recommend dumplings (pelmeni) in clay pot, Caesar salad (actually, any salad), Khachapuri, lemonade. Place is always busy and sometimes it takes time to serve your order.

This is a great place to discover for craft beer lovers. 24 taps of draft beer and more than 50 bottles/cans can be found here. There are up to 130 seats in the restaurant, two floors with two different concepts. The dishes represent wide range of flavors

My wife and I stopped here to try some of their beers. On that front it was very disappointing. They had 3 of their own beers on their drought beer list but 2 were sold out. I asked about one of their canned beers and they were sold out of that as well. The good news is that they have a good import selection (e.g. Mikkeller, Stone, Brew Dog) and the service was good. Waste of time for us however.
