We found Southern Kitchen after Sunday mass and loved it! Breakfast was plentiful and quick in spite of the large crowd. Efficiently moved the tables as diners finished and left.

Barbie's Place

As a native of New Jersey, I am accustomed to shabby, well-loved, bustling breakfast and lunch spots that despite their dusty chachkies, worn out but attentive servers, and miraculous ability to pass health inspections, keep you coming back. I wanted very much to like this place. I didn't.I ordered biscuits and gravy and the turkey club. The biscuit gravy was the consistency of tapioca pudding and served at about the same temperature. It tasted like nothing except for maybe the paste I would sometimes sample as a small child at the arts and crafts table. The biscuits were completely engulfed in the gravy and disintegrated as soon as they hit the air, much like ancient artifacts. The club arrived disheveled and so haphazardly thrown together I gave up eating it after the first half. Wedges and toothpicks are traditional assembly components of a club sandwich for a reason. The filling to bread ration of 4:1, that miscalculation, coupled with rubbery turkey, super thin white toast, and the missing fortifications of picks, hastened a total collapse after bite #1, a tragedy catalyzed efficiently by 1/2 cup of mayo. The fries being cold and greasy were a fitting complement to a dud of a meal. I wasted a Sunday lunch here, and clearly I was ready to make a caloric commitment of epic proportions. Ultimately, I settled for a Fiber One bar I found in my purse. Maybe this place does something "just right" but I am not brave enough to return. I will never go back to Barbie's, even if I somehow convinced myself the kitchen must be cleaner than the dining room.

This is a little hole-in-the-wall diner serving what you'd expect for breakfast and lunch. I suspect that some reviewers don't take the specifics into consideration and may compare these smaller places to fancy (and expensive) restaurants. This is exactly what you'd expect from a strip-mall diner. The food is good, the portions hearty and the service is quick and efficient. Bottomless coffee was good and eggs were as ordered.
