Hill Cafe & Bistro

Reviewed By Anthony R

I wanted to take my fiancée for a really nice romantic meal and had heard great things about this place. We both absolutely love Mediterranean and Turkish style food so were really excited about trying it out for Date Night. Now, we always find the best way to judge this type of restaurant is on their Hot (as in temperature) Meze Platter. It's a little bit of everything and really showcases what the place can do. Squid rings, sausage, grilled halloumi, meatballs, cheese pastries etc. all give a great indication of the chef's prowess and the quality of the other delicacies available. So firstly we ordered drinks. My fiancée ordered an orange juice and was given an orange squash (for £2.00!). I took it back for exchange and was told this WAS orange juice and that's all they had. So she settled for a glass of tap water. The waiter insisted that their orange juice came from a carton and said he'd bring it over to prove it - strangely that didn't happen.Next came the Meze for two. What can I say. Grim. Just grim. We were so hungry but just struggled. We sampled most of the various deep fried shapes of food but all just tasted of old cooking oil and salt. We were so disappointed. I didn't even recognise some of the things on the plate and I've had Mezes from all over the world. No olives, no houmous, no bread - the waiter did say he'd bring us some bread (which would have been welcome) but then a party of six came into the restaurant and we were forgotten.Once again, we both really wanted to like this place and support a local business - I've been following them on FB and the food always looks amazing, so I can only assume we caught them on a bad day when, perhaps, the oil needed changing in the deep fat fryer? So we just paid the bill and left. That was £22.85 and 30 minutes of my life I'll never get back.As a footnote: Most of the bars and restaurants in Huntingdon have really upped their game to compete with the new Wetherspoons. Best of luck Hill Ephesus Restaurant!

The Cock

Reviewed By Andysview

Cambs Cuisine restaurants are usually so good, so quite a surprise with the Cock. Have been a number of times and usually good, however tonight not so!Tried a fish special starter, King Prawns with garlic, chilli and ginger sounded really nice, however reality was far from expectation. 3 small prawns with a somewhat bland dressing on a bed of blend puree. £8+, avoid, the Duck Parcels that others in our party had were much better choice. I know what I will have IF I go again. Main course steak was much better, if a little basically presented, however others that had the beetroot risotto reported to be rather bland. Deserts were basic fare, nothing to write home about. In summary, they really need to look at the taste of their dishes, after all what is the main priority of the food that is served. TASTE!On the positive side, service was excellent and the beers very good (apart from running out of their guest beer half way through service. May return, but will be keeping a keen eye on reviews first to see if they sort out their menu and flavours. Thank you for leaving us some feedback on your recent visit to us, sorry to hear that you had some disappointment with the food that you ordered. The tiger prawn dish does have a simple puree with it as the prawns themselves have been blasted with the strong flavours of garlic, chilli & ginger, we want to avoid losing these wonderful tastes with more over powering spices. It may well still be on the fish menu next time, if you were to come again. It was supposed to come off a week ago however its been so popular we've extended its time with us.Good to hear you enjoyed the steak. With the beetroot risotto, I like to mix the strong flavours of the smoked mozzarella & candied walnuts, that dress the top, into the risotto. It really brings the dish to life! Our current dessert menu does have a lot of classics on there but I feel chef has given them our own unique twist. If you come again, which I really hope you do, you must try the Pear Tart Tatin with celery syrup & Gorgonzola ice cream or the Chocolate Orange Fondant with chocolate soil & filled with orange curd.Sorry that the guest ale went while you were here, we only get 1 keg of each of the guest ales in, then once its gone its gone, the line is then cleaned & the next one then comes on. The change over can take about an hour or longer if its busy. However with the two house ales & IPA we can kept the flow going much quicker.Lovely to hear that you appreciate our service & hope very much that we get to see you again soon.RegardsBen

Old Bridge Hotel Restaurant

We sampled the delights of The Old Bridge restaurant three times over the course of our one night stay at the hotel. Our room rate included tea and scones on arrival which we chose to have in the hotel bar on a busy Saturday afternoon. Buzzy and welcoming, it was obviously a popular place for lunch and teas, and we thoroughly enjoyed ours served with clotted cream and jam, with starched napkins and beautiful china.Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. Having enjoyed cocktails in the lounge where we were invited to study the menu and winelist, we were then taken through to the main restaurant and shown to our table. No upselling here- complimentary water, still or fizzy, was served with delicious crusty homemade bread. Starters- tomato and mozarella salad, and chicken liver pate- were both perfect. Tuna, served rare, and steak fillet tails were equally good. My steak was the best I've tasted in ages and ages... Desserts- top notch!Breakfast the next morning was just as good- a plentiful buffet with good quality ingredients, lots of strong coffee, and variations on a full English (and more) were on offer. And everything looked good enough to eat!The chef obviously knows his (or her!) stuff, as do the lovely waiting staff who looked after us.We thoroughly enjoyed everything about our stay here, and the restaurant was most definitely a highlight for us.Thanks to all for a most enjoyable experience. Thanks so much Delius for an amazingly positive review. And a big relief for the team after a run of more negative responses below this one, which is of course very dispiriting. We really look forward to seeing you again soon.Kind regardsJohn Hoskins

Very friendly atmosphere, exquisite food, fast service. I came in for lunch yesterday and had the pakora, brisket and the white chocolate fondant. honestly some of the food I’ve ever eaten, without a doubt the tastiest food in the area. The flavour pairing is absolute genius and clearly prepared and presented by a true professional. My dessert was absolutely amazing, who ever cooked it must be a truly skilled human being with an amazing eye for plating dishes up. The food and service was brilliant, and surprisingly affordable. Would recommend!
