Find out what Gastropub restaurants to try in St Mawes. St Mawes (Cornish: Lannvowsedh) is a small town opposite Falmouth, on the Roseland Peninsula on the south coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It lies on the east bank of the Carrick Roads, a large waterway created after the Ice Age from an ancient valley which flooded as the melt waters caused the sea level to rise dramatically, creating an immense natural harbour, often claimed to be the third largest in the world. It was once a busy fishing port, but the trade declined during the 20th century and it now serves as a popular tourist location, with many properties in the town functioning as holiday accommodation. The town is in the civil parish of St Just in Roseland.

We visited on Sunday night after seeing the positive reviews on Tripadvisor. We didnât book (thereâs no option on the website but the team told us next time fill in the enquiry form and theyâll confirm.)Iâd recommend booking as there are only a finite number of tables and it is clearly very popular. For good reason! Despite the lack of booking the super friendly team made sure we were accommodated.Service was prompt but not rushed. Very chatty but not intrusive. Laid back but on the ball too.Food...terrific. We shared an indulgent Camembert together and then both had the burger. Bursting with great flavour and texture.Excellent selection of beer, nice wine list for the location. And value! We are Londoners and so the reasonable prices were very refreshingThank you team, it was lovely.

Here at the Star and Garter, we're passionate about our ingredients and work closely with some of the best artisan suppliers in the county. We cook over an open fire and have a "nose to tail" philosophy, meaning we can pick and choose what goes on the men
Went here for a work thing so wasnât in control of where we ate. Having looked at the menu online seeing zero vegan options I was worried that Iâd be sat drinking water and eating nothing in front of colleagues so I phoned ahead and was reassured that there were vegan options but that the menu on the website wasnât current. Feeling better about the situation I arrived to see only one vegan starter, one vegan main and zero vegan desserts :( None of the vegan options were labelled vegan either so I only knew they were SFV because I asked. The starter option was some kind of pepper dish, I ordered it because there was nothing else expecting stuffed peppers or something, but was genuinely shocked when I was served literally 20 plain peppers on a plate. Meanwhile my colleagues are eating delicate salads, delicious looking chicken wings and fancy potato croquettes... I was upset to be honest as I felt forgotten and that a vegan option was a last thought when it came to menu development, and realised halfway through my 20 peppers that I wasnât enjoying them. Then I got nervous because the only vegan main course, which I therefore had to order, was aubergine (literally no ones favourite vegetable) with yet more peppers. My colleagues had ordered loads of chips so I was hoping to turn this evening around with potato only to be told the chips had duck skin sprinkled on them. The staff who were so lovely and patient with our obnoxious group offered to bring me some non-duck skin chips which I really really appreciated. Watching my colleagues tuck into hearty portions of roasted meats, cauliflower gratins, buttered greens and more while I was faced with more plain(ish) veg was pretty sad and has been the only time in my four years of being vegan that I felt truly disappointed at my life choices. Then I sat through dessert with nothing while everyone else ate cheesecake, ice cream and chocolate tarts before I could leave. My group was large and difficult so I would like to acknowledge the great service, polite and thoughtful staff made me feel a lot better when I was getting embarrassed by my groups poor timekeeping skills. I really expected better from a place Iâve heard only good things about. The starter was definitely lacking, especially when compared to the standard of meal the non vegans were given, and then to be followed by a meal that was more of the same peppers but now with added aubergine was absolutely not worth £16. Itâs so easy to make amazing vegan meals, and to not offer one even one vegan dessert (not even sorbet!?) was pretty rubbish. Vegan pies, tarts, curries, gourmet burgers, nut roast, pasta dishes are all things vegans love to see on a menu so it would be great to see something more like that in future. Iâd recommend this place for drinks as staff are fantastic and atmosphere is lovely but the vegan food was not up to modern standards. (Great staff though guys thank you really sorry to complain)Next time, please let us know your specific dietary requirements and our kitchen will make something for you; weâve nothing against vegans, I assure you. However, our menu is very much shaped by the superb local meat and fish sourced on our doorstep and weâre not afraid to admit it!

Food was very heavy and calorie laden, had heartburn for 2 days afterwards .garlic bread was literally dripping , if you like greasy food its definitely for you, I had the scallops which I thought was a healthy choice, but they were so swamped in sauce they were deemed tastless.Sorry to hear of your disappointed. The scallops are actually one of our most popular dishes and we've never had a complaint about them. it's a shame you didn't mention any of the issues during your visit with us. I'm also very sorry you had too waste time writing your very first review on trip advisor when again you just have simply mentioned it on the night . What did you have for mains ? Hopefully they were to you satisfaction ? Also the only gave 2 stars for service. This shocks me as Sarah is an absolute diamond of a host and is fantastic with all the customers. Thank you for you wordsPaul

Beautiful old building in a stunning location. It was Thursday night and we were in luck - curry night! Superb beef rogan josh with nan bread poppadum, Mango chutney and a free drink! Curry was delicious and good value. My dessert was weird and expensive but my husband really enjoyed his. All in all an excellent evening, good wine choice too at sensible prices.Thank you for your review, delighted you enjoyed our curry night! It's a regular fixture during October and November, and we also have other special food nights which you'll find publicised on our Facebook page. We're not sure what your 'weird' dessert was as you don't specify, but we're pleased your husband enjoyed his! Our wine list has won awards and we put a lot of time and effort into selecting a great range of wines at good prices â we're glad you approve! We hope to see you again soon.
