I used to love Miller & Carter but my latest experience has put me off completely. In an over crowded food market (especially in chelmsford) a lot can be said for good friendly service. My sister made the booking for me and my family to have a a celebratory birthday meal for my 31st and specified in the booking the occasion and to make it special for us. This certainly wasn't considered. I arrived with my parents and was seated on a cramped table. I ordered a glass of prosecco and was asked for ID. I am 31 years old, out for a dinner with my 60 year old parents! Common sense says I am not under 18! I understand the think 25 policey but that night I did not look under 25, and certainly not under 18. There are rules I know, but you can also use a bit of intelligence. I was fuming when refused as were my parents, as they wanted it to be a nice evening for us. We nearly left but not wanting to cause further stress I went home and collected my ID. No apology was given when I submitted my ID either. A complete lack if compassion.We also ordered a bottle of the house red but were asked if 'we were sure that's what we wanted'? Odd question. On asking why is it not any good (jokingly) the waiter replied 'no'. Oh dear, you're selling HOUSE wine that your staff think is vile. Maybe that was an up sale, either way it was strange and unsettling. The food took forever and was purely mediocre. All the dishes were high fat and rich, even the lettuce wedge (apparently a pallete cleanser before the steak) only had heavy rich dressing options. The service lacked warmth, speed and sympathy and there was definitely no effort to make it special for us. It put a real downer on my evening, and I will not be coming back I'm afraid. There are so many better options in the area. Visited for a late lunch with carnivore loving eldest son (thankfully not vegetarian girlfriend..) and took advantage of their £10.95 lunch offer. The salads and other hot bits were all fine but the meats served at the table were fantastic! Limited selection of about 5 or 6 items compared to their evening offer but this was more than enough and all served in perfect condition, really tasty and generous as always, despite the restaurant being very quiet. Service very pleasant, drinks fairly expensive and a hefty service charge balance out the value for money but will definitely return. Noticed they do a 241 Wednesday offer

Visited the restaurant with a group of friends on a friday night. Great atmosphere and decor. The staff were really friendly and the service was good. I had halloumi and chicken shish, the chicken was moist and they give you lots of rice and salad to accompany your meal.They even let me take my left overs home in a bag! I was also impressed with the cocktails...tasty and not too expensive either Will definitley be returning in the future! Thank you
