We were staying nearby and decided to visit for dinner. The specials board looked nice and we enjoyed some home made potato crisps while we browsed the menu. To start we had the bread board with olives, butter & the most amazing home-made hummus and Brie bites with tomato chutney. For mains we had haddock, ribeye steak and cheeseburger all served with triple cooked chips. The food was delicious and perfectly cooked and portions were large so we struggled to finish our meals completely!!! No room to sample deserts sadly! The staff were polite and attentive and there was an extensive wine list with a bottle of chilled water served at the table. A really lovely night and would highly recommend a visit here!! The locals in the bar enjoyed real ale and whisky which looked good also!!!Thank you Julia for such a lovely review and we're delighted you enjoyed your evening with us. Please do come back again soon and perhaps you might even stay with us next time!

Middle Ruddings Country Inn & Restaurant

My husband and I came to the lakes for his birthday and we were stopping at the Royal Oak which was busy and vibrant with the option to eat. However we decided to venture out and see what else was available. We came across this pub that we actually loved on first impressions for the fact it was still old in interior and had some character. The barman was very helpful on arrival, and was happy to seat us and told us when we asked that we could eat outside if we wanted or indoors. We ordered some wine and took the menus. When we decided what we wanted to eat, we were informed that they didn’t have this or 2 other dishes. This is when the tone of the service changed. We asked for the seabass but without the chilli and lime glaze, and the barman seemed annoyed by this, and then we asked for an extra side of veg on top of our mains, he informed that there was veg with the dishes and did we really want more. Of course as we asked for this and wanted extra veg. He walked off pulled a face and then came back and asked if anything else was wanted. Then informed that he now wouldn’t bring the food outside and would simply leave on the table when it was ready (by this time already had we spent £55 on wine). The waiter in the restaurant came and offered us bread, and then delivered our food. The slow cooked beef brisket “hot pot” was nothing more than a dry Sunday roast dinner with cheap meat that should have been in a casserole, pie or hotpot as described. The extra veg ordered didn’t arrive and the one that did was swimming in water and blanched to death. We asked for the extra and it came quite quickly however this again was waterlogged and over done and completely different to the one before. (Who even blanches a whole fennel with beef) the seabass which was £14 roughly was the smallest piece of fish ever, with basically boiled peeled potatoes described as gremalata .. no parsley, no lemon, no garlic which is exactly what my partner was told they would be when he went up to the bar to order some chips instead. It was all very over sold and under delivered. The atmosphere was awful. No music.. no conversation and then when we left the table to pay for the bill because we didn’t want to make an even worse atmosphere, we were charged half of the price of the beef despite not even eating it. We refused and the chef came out and being very condescending and ranting at us about how the beef is cooked and that hot pot is put on the menu because he “cooked it in a HOT pot” . At the time my partner never mentioned that he owns his own very successful restaurant. Has been a chef and also worked in this industry for 20 years. They took the extra off the bill but only after arguing at the bar in front of other customers which made us feel uncomfortable. If you want a sandwich or a brisket Sunday lunch.. then this is your place.. but for our final bill of £72 when it was awful and we had to go back to our hotel to eat.. this isn’t your place.

I've been to the Swinside a few times now but until yesterday I hadn't eaten there. It was an extremely busy bank holiday Sunday afternoon and it was lovely weather so the garden was heaving... I was with my wife, two young sons and two friends.... There was a bit of a wait for our food however that was totally understandable considering how busy it was... I had the Lamb Sunday Roast. It was perfect. The lamb was tender and the gravy was delicious. The veg was cooked perfectly, not too soft, and there was even cauliflower cheese... The portion size was generous too... My wife and son had burgers. My Wife had duck & chilli burger and one of my son's had the standard burger. My youngest son had the kids egg & chips.Again everything was perfect with these meals. Our two friends had burgers too and they were equally happy. All the food came out together and the service was fantastic from very busy waitresses... I think one of the girls was called Leah??? Based on this experience on a busy day I would highly recommend dining here... The setting is also breath taking.... Keep up the good work guys...

This review covers two visits. Overall still a 5 star review but one visit was better than the others. Had dinner on Saturday night and the food was really lovely. Hearty, tasty and plentiful- just what you need after a day on the fells. Went back in for Sunday lunch on Sunday (obvs!) and given the standard of food from the night before it was a bit disappointing. Under-seasoned. The roast potatoes were literally whole potatoes so were too big to be really crispy and roasted. Bit disappointing but after going up skiddaw we were ravenous so we cleared plates anyway but perhaps a bit more care required on the Sunday food.Thank you for your 5 'star' review. So pleased you had such lovely meals with us on the Saturday...the chefs have seem you comments. They are a little disappointed, as I am, that we didn't quite hit the note on the Sunday. Some of the roast potatoes were left too large when roasting off We were short staffed this Sunday however that is not an excuse and your point has been taken on board. We do apologise. Thanks again and hope you will call in again next time on the fells.Michelle(owner)
