The Travellers Rest is situated in stunning Northumberland, only a short drive away from the market town of Hexham. The inn, which dates back to the 1840s, has a warm and cosy atmosphere due to the low-beamed ceilings and large open fire. We offer a warm
One of us had a delicious steak -the other an inedible Thai green curry. Complimented them on steak -no question was everything ok with the curry-clearly barely touched but completely uninterested-not acceptable today-maybe uninterested-young untrained team? We're really sorry that your visit didn't go as planned. My husband and I had lunch today, as we do frequently at the Anchor, but today was exceptional. I had hake wrapped in pancetta with a light wine and cream sauce, served with samphire and finely chopped tomato. Exquisite is the only word. Tom had fish and chips (or should that be whale and chips), beautifully crisp batter, and fresh salad. The Anchor serve fabulous food, and the service is superb.

Went here with a couple of friends on the Sunday of the Allendale fair weekend. Staff had had a super busy weekend but were welcoming and friendly. We all got food, I had some great homemade onion rings. Great pub food. Staff deserve high praise for their customer service during a hectic weekend. Whenever I'm next out for a walk in the area I'll be sure to come here afterwards.

Went to The Red Lion specifically due to the new vegetarian menu. The cauliflower buffalo wings were soggy and uncooked, with uncooked batter dripping all over the plate. The veggie pie and chips had gravy so thick and jelly like that it wouldnât pour. All the vegetables were limp and cold. It was frozen food, reheated and awful. Other meat eaters in our party said the same about the burgers and scampi. Definitely wont be eating here again.

We booked ourselves in for a meal last night having found the restaurant on the tastecard website. We arrived 15 minutes early for our table at 7 to be told the chef wasn't here yet and offered a drink. It is very much a locals pub, with the bartender continuing to chat to the locals whilst serving us. After 15 minutes we were provided with menus though not shown to the dining room so we walked over ourselves. It's a small restaurant with only about 10 tables. It's very quaintly decorated. It was a different waitress in the restaurant and she seemed much more keen on friendly hospitality. Our order was quickly taken and bread and olives were provided as nibbles which was a nice touch. There was no music in the restaurant and as there were only 4 tables it did get awkwardly quiet at times and you could hear other diners conversations with ease. One couple who were seated did walk out before ordering, which I could understand as all in all it was a rather strange set up. Anyway, it took about 45 minutes for food to arrive. The portions were generous and tasty. With the tastecard the bill came to £20 for 2 mains and 2 drinks. Would we return again, probably not, even though the food was lovely based primarily on the atmosphere. I do feel that this place has lots of potential if front of house was a more friendly and approachable.

We weren't sure if this was going to be another pub where it's all meat and potatoes but were delightfully surprised at the variety of choice and the quality. The Stilton and broccoli soup was outstanding. They happily accommodated our request to skip the potatoes and double the veggies.
