Precisely the type of cafe/restaurant you hope to stumble across in a small market town. Smart, sophisticated and stylish - without appearing to try too hard. A great and interesting menu full of surprises. Not the cheapest - many menu items share a £5.95 or £9.95 option (starter or main) - and it's the same menu for lunch or dinner. They also do special food nights - later this month it's a range of tapas courses which looked pretty good for £15.95.

I had high hopes for this pub after reading the reviews however I felt disappointed with our stay. The rooms themselves were quite nice, a few interesting touches and quirky features. Clean and modern considering the age of the pub and a style that complimented the building. On booking it took several attempts to pay, using different cards only to find that there wasn't a problem with our cards, it was operator error with the card machine. I emailed to ask for a receipt and to inform the restaurant that I am gluten-free but we never got a reply. On arrival, we checked in but our restaurant booking at 8.15pm hadn't been made, luckily there was a capacity to fit us in.3 our of the 4 main meals were good but I ordered Lamb rump only to find the piece of meat nearly unediblle as it was tough and chewy. I told our waitress about the meat however the manager told her to tell me that it wasn't his fault, it was just a bad cut of meat. I then ordered a cheeseboard and made a point of mentioning that i am gluten-free only to be sent regular crackers. I had to ask if it was gluten-free, only for them to then change the crackers. This could have made me extremely ill had I not noticed. The next morning at breakfast, there was food on the floor from the night before. We poured our milk for the tea to find it had gone off.Throughout our stay the only person who made feel welcome and seemed happy to be working there was our waitress for our evening meal. Even on checking out I was met with the same glum face that met us at breakfast. I think it's fair to say I won't be returning. So I gave you a generous rating of average.

The service was slow and poor. There were a very small handful of tables in - our waitress came over to take a drinks order but then never came with the drinks so we asked a young lady who was very lovely, she was nervous but will grow to be an asset to the team. After we got our drinks we waited 20mins to order food - in the end we had to go up to order, we then had a 38mins wait for food although tables who ordered after us got their food earlier. Once we had finished our meal empty plates were sat in front of us for 29mins until a lovely young lady who had just started her shift came over to take them away, she also came back promptly to take our dessert order as well.We visited at 3.30pm, tables were quiet, the manager and a trainee were in and due to other tables being annoyed by the service other staff members got called in early. The food itself was good, the reason many people go is because it's good for the low cost of it. The steak was supposed to be medium but was well done. The quick bite bbq and cheese is a new favourite and the chunky chips are delicious. This is the 4th time we've visited as it is close to us, usually food is cremated and it has shown that some staff lack training.Would not advise.Visited on Wednesday the 30th.Gosh, just for the benifit of Trip Advisor readers, I have reported this review for 2 reasons, 1. The dishes you say are your "new favourite and chunky chips deliciou"s (despite after stating food is cremated ?)However we serve neither of the above, what we do sell is clealy advertised on our online web site.Plus additionally I am GM and unfortunately collect my son at 3.15 every day and I am only person that collects him, I was most definately not in the business. So thank you ocean reviewer, apart from being writing a review for the wrong business, if you are going to rate a "do not advise" I would say seems a little harsh as you named a new favourite and how lovely team were. Also, despite writing over 66 reviews and you live local, its the first for whichever running horse it was that you visited? The team here at the Running Horse Fakenham, jump hoops and work really hard to ensure our guests are happy. However on a personal note if after 4 visists, you still don't like?

Booked for dinner on a weekday evening. Upon arrival greeted by a sign saying 'order your drinks at the bar'. There was no sign of anybody to greet you and take you to the restaurant. The young lad behind the bar was serving two customers who arrived before us. It took him an age to serve two drinks and by this time a few young lads had arrived and stood at the bar. Once the barman had finished serving the couple he ignored us and started chatting and serving his mates. We walked out immediately. Cannot comment on the food as we didn't get that far by the bar looked very shoddy and uninviting. We won't be returning here.Hi Graham,I'm really sorry for your experience. As you can see from our reviews we are highly rated for our service, food and ambiance so my sincere apologies for what you say. If you can let me know what evening it was and I will investigate who was on shift as that shouldn't have occurred and hasn't before as we focus a lot on our guest service training so something went wrong on that occasion, apologies. We always take guests through to the restaurant and that would've happened. It's a shame that you didn't bring it to the manager's attention as we could've dealt with it then, all would've been resolved and you would've enjoyed our excellent food. I do disagree with your personal point though that the bar looked 'shoddy' and uninviting, I don't see how you can make that comment, most guests love this old 18th Century riverside mill and it's beams, flowers, cosiness, gardens and our range of beers, wines and local spirits is second to none. Are you local? I do hope that you return and please introduce yourself to me so we can help to correct your view. Many thanks, Ian

We brought our son and grandson here for a fish supper after a long hot day out. We were surprised that it was open on Sunday. This was news to us but I am aware that it appears to have changed owners as I didn't recognise most of the staff. It seemed busy and we were informed that it would be 10 mins before we would be served. We actually got our food over 30 mins from sitting down, then one of the orders was wrong, we then had a five minute wait for our sides to arrive and another 5 mins before the drinks, again one wrong, arrived. By this time the queue was out of the door and down the street. The quality of the food was comparable to previous visits but the service wasn't. It appeared, I may be wrong, that there were only three working behind the counter plus one serving tables. My point really is that it would appear that you open on a Sunday because it is profitable, so make sure you have enough staff to serve your customers. So be prepared for a very long wait for your food if you go at a busy timeHello Jim,I understand you visit us regularly from your many reviews. The Sunday you refer to was August bank holiday weekend and yes we was VERY busy which you rightly state in your review, you was informed of a wait which you obviously accepted so why then feel the need to complain out it? The shop hasn’t changed hands simply some partners have left, the staff have largely unchanged for over 10 years, but thanks for noticing! I suppose I must apologise for your extended wait and shall take on board the need for a small army of staff next bank holiday. On the upside I’m glad you enjoyed your food.

We ate in this restaurant mid week while on holiday in Norfolk. Luckily we had booked - it was busy with mainly local families. Service was friendly and prompt and the food tasted home cooked; I had the Lasagne and my husband a gammon steak, pleasant change to fish and sea food. Reliable restaurant and useful for self catering holiday visitors.

Freshly prepared and very tasty food.Good sized portions attractively served.Quality ingredients and great value for money.Very clean pleasant surroundings away from the traffic and noise on the street.Staff very pleasant and working very hard indeed. There have been some earlier reviews citing delays between ordering and serving.Yes it wasn’t pit stop speed, but it did take a reassuringly appropriate amount of time such that the food could be freshly prepared. I’ve never heard of anybody asking their surgeon to rush or to hurry up. Well I feel exactly the same way about hard working staff preparing my food.Well done and keep up the good work!Perhaps think about doing occasional (Saturday?) evening meals please?Thank you very much for your kind words in your very extensive review, my response won’t be as long . You are quite right about when ordering food with us, it is not served at pit stop speed. We prefer to treat all our customer’s orders as individual ones and take great care in our presentation of all orders. Some of our ingredients we grow organically ourselves, thereby guaranteeing both freshness and quality. We have thought about doing another occasional evening event as we have previously done. If we do one we will advertise it on our website. Next time you are in Fakenham we will be very pleased to see you again.
