Chester-le-Street (/ˈtʃɛstər li ˈstriːt/) is a town in County Durham, England. Its history goes back to the building of a Roman fort called Concangis. This Roman fort is the "Chester" (from the Latin castra) of the town's name; the "Street" refers to the paved Roman road that ran north–south through the town, and which is now called Front Street (shown at right).

A âPay As You Feelâ café on Chester-le-Street high street. Built by volunteers, run by volunteers, and fuelled by food waste, a beautiful place of inclusive community and creativity. REfUSE is Durhamâs branch of The Real Junk Food Project: a network of or
Having walked past a couple of times I was keen to try this cafe where the ingredients are donated foods that would otherwise go to waste. Surplus produce from allotments and unsalable supermarket fresh food, for whatever reason, find their way onto the menu and the community fridge and shelves on a "pay as you feel " basis. The cafe is a large, quirky space with mismatched tables and chairs, bare brick walls and recycled pallets. We ordered a selection of hot dishes and chose what appealed. The soup, spiced pumpkin, was tasty if a little thin. Beef stew and mash was standard winter fare. The squash and grain dish was a dish of two halves. One part was a mixture of squash cubes with quinoa that was just warm but seemed to have burnt on the bottom of the pan while the other was a pile of mashed spicy squash that was piping hot. We also ordered tea and one piece of cake and took a pot of soup from the fridge that came from Booths, the Waitrose of the north!!The positives are the friendly volunteers and the overall concept. Points for improvement include the general finesse of the dishes and the temperature of the cafe which we found a bit chilly, especially when the staff went into the back. One toilet had no toilet paper and the other had no hand towel. Overall it's worthy of a repeat visit and I wish them every success. We paid what we would normally spend on lunch at one of the pubs on Chester le Street Front Street but ate freshly prepared rather than commercial food which is always a bonus. You can also pay by pledging a service such as washing up or playing live music.

Come here with family twice a week and on average spend £45 which over 46 weeks add upto over 4k spent in here Today what's the old school pudding? 1 jam pudding left then it goes to syrup sponge ! I will have a syrup sponge. I will have to ask chef answer NO it's the rule not until the jam sponge gone !!!!how annoying and what happened to customer choice ahahahahahahHi Im David Burnside the owner of The Chester Moor, after reading your review i was very disappointed in how the staff have dealt with your request. I have spoken with everyone involved and this will not happen again. if you would like to E-Mail me at [email protected] so hopefully we can resolve this issue as i would hate to lose a very loyal customer. Comfortable, tasteful decor with great music playing. Staff were very pleasant, helpful and attentive. Good range of dishes at very reasonable prices.Mediterranean pasta with chicken was delicious, very tasty and piping hot from the kitchen. Cumberland curl and mash equally delicious. This came with very tasty gravy and a small amount of crispy leeks. (An extra vegetable served with this may be a good idea)Chocolate brownie with ice cream and a white chocolate and lime pie with cream were both very nice. Will definitely return

This Sonnet 43 Brew Pub and Restaurant, has recently been refurbished to a very high standard offering locally sourced food from the finest of suppliers. You are guaranteed a warm and freindly welcome.
This was my first visit to the newly refurbished Charlie's Steak House in the rear of Lampton Worm The first impressions are definitely very positive; the restaurant area has definitely benefited from the redecorating , but I am left with the distinct impression that this is all about simply trying to make more money for the owner , rather than provide greater value for money for the customerThe steak theme is very obvious ( even in the decor ) , and whilst the steaks themselves are pretty good quality, the prices have gone up and the whole " Himalayan Salt " thing just feels like a ruse to charge a significant premium The menu has lost some old favourites; for example the mixed grill has bizarrely disappeared in a steak house, and the beautiful cod dish has been disappointingly replaced with sea bassI had the chicken Caesar salad starter , and it was the worst value for money Caesar salad that I have ever had for £6+ : very little chicken and loads of croutons - never again The wine list has changed as well - but again, it feels like they have just taken the opportunity to up the prices rather than provide good value for money They should make the bar food menu openly available in the restaurant - and I am sure that customers would accept an uplift of a few pounds per unit to eat in the nicer surroundings As all the food comes from the same kitchen - so I am not sure why they restrict the choice Nevertheless, Charlie's is an improvement but , for us, I suspect we will eat in the bar more often than before - which I don't think was the aim of the exercise!!
