Sidmouth /ˈsɪdməθ/ is a town situated on the English Channel coast in Devon, South West England, 14 miles (23 km) east-southeast of Exeter. In 2004, it had a population of about 15,000, of whom 40% were aged 65 or over. By the time of the 2011 census the population was 12,569. It is a tourist resort and a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. A large part of the town has been designated a conservation area.

Today was special. It was our wedding anniversary.We came down to Sidmouth to avoid the congestion of our local area currently hosting an air show.When in Sidmouth, we usually eat out at âThe Shipâ.Tonight the Ship was full and unable to accommodate any further bookings.Thank goodness for that because we strolled around the corner in search of an alternative venue. We noticed The Blues Wine Bar and from the menu we thought âLets give it a go!âFirstly the ambience was just right. The seating is traditional 2 or 4 tables, with a suite of leather upholstered chairs and sofa for patrons partaking of a wine and a gossip.Each table was lit by proper candles..(not tea lights!)Anyone who has read any of my previous reviews will be aware of my pet hate...(piped muzak). Well I have to say the owners of this venue have it just right. There is music but it is pleasant and âbackgroundâ low enough to hear but not intrusive and a lovely selection of easy listening jazz. We could therefore hold a conversation without having to shout! There were a few very friendly and pleasant locals in who slid made us welcome.This has to be one of the best decisions we have made in ages.We were made very welcome by a very attentive young lady who, whilst being attentive was not overbearing and knew the choice of pasta dishes that are available and gave sound advice on the consistency and taste of each dish.My wife had spaghetti Bolognese, whilst I had spaghetti carbonara.Now Iâm very fussy about my carbonara. I donât like it floating in a heavily creamy sauce!Wow! This dish certainly did not disappoint. I have to say it was without doubt the best spaghetti carbonara that ai have ever had! Oh and yes I did compliment the staff on this.I canât wait to come back to a Sidmouth and come back for a second visit. We might even come on a Sunday for a roast.Thank you and well done Blues Wine Bar for helping to make our special day.

Recently had family visiting and decided to visit the pub for an evening drink. Young chap behind the bar served our drinks politely, but didnât make us feel particularly welcome. Beer was good and owners were in the garden chatting with customers. Pub has plenty of potential. Still some work to do inside to give it more of a relaxed and welcoming country pub feel and hedging round the garden looks scruffy and needs trimming, but still early days. Will return in a couple of months to catch up on improvements.This is the second time you have written a review about the otter since we took over in November 2018. It is obvious from your first review back in January 2019 that you donât like the way we have refurbished the pub. A considerable amount of money has now been spent including £500.00 having the hedge trimmed right back and new hedging placed in the gaps. I have no intentions of trimming the hedge at this moment in time as the birds are feeding on the fruit. You mentioned a number of venues in your first review that you like to visit, and I suggest that you stick with them. I also note that you have never written these venues a review on TripAdvisor, one may ask weather you are a professional complainer.The pubs interior is here to stay as there are a lot of people that appreciate what we have done and love the decor and furnishings (which is more than it had before we took it on). I have no intentions of doing anymore work in the near future as regards to purchasing sofas and chairs and I hope this reply will put everyone in the picture. Nothing more to do at present.

Lovely pub well decorated and lovely relaxed atmosphere. Nice to nip in for a couple. Live music at weekend. Didn't get to see this but if went back to stay would definetly go back in here

We have been regular customers at the Blue Ball up to when the long-standing owner sold it back to the Brewery and it went rapidly down hill. The food suffered immeasurably and the staff lost the polish that we had been accustomed to. As you will see, the reviews mirror exactly that and what was an excellent local facility disappeared. New owners have just taken over. Local people with a good track record and a mountain to climb to bring the Pub back to its former glory.We visited today with my family - 6 of us in total to enjoy the Carvery and I am delighted to say Welcome Back The Blue Ball!The food was back to the high standard - all cooked to perfection. The staff were bright and cheerful and could not do enough to help. The management can also be seen making sure that everything works like clockwork. Not surprising but it was full without a table to spare. They appear to cater for a 12:00 and 14:00 sitting so be sure to book to ensure that you can be accommodated.Itâs a shame that the reviewer below rated the Pub so low taking into account that they did not even sample the food on offer. If they were also able people they should blame themselves for walking into a busy and again a popular pub expecting a table in between sittings. Empty tables does not mean that someone else has not already booked it! Blaming someone else for your bad decisions always make me chuckle.Keep up the hard work and we hope to see you again very soon.

We stayed just around the corner in a holiday cottage, the last time here the pub didnât do food so being so close to the cottage we gave it a try. We must have ended coming here more than any other in the area due to super friendly staff. Two young fellas and a girl who usually served us were so very very nice! I apologise we canât recall their names, one young chap even off duty went out of the way to greet us. Also the locals were so nice. Apart from being a good place for a drink and chat we ate here twice and the food was excellent. The SUNDAY ROAST was the BEST we have ever had anywhere, it was so perfectly cooked. What a top notch chef they have. We are 6 hours drive away but it is tempting to return just for that Sunday lunch. Well done all at the Volunteer. All the best for uni and we hope one day to return and meet again.

As it was Bank Holiday weekend I prebooked a table for Sunday lunch. I asked for a table outside as we would have a dog with us. This would have been a good time to inform me that we should go straight into the garden with the dog, as dogs are not allowed in the pub. When we arrived we went into the bar to enquire which table had been allocated to us as the place was clearly very busy. We were greeted by a very aggresive and agitated owner who kept telling us to take the dog outside as dogs are NOT allowed in the pub. At the same time he was standing in the way of the exit to the garden. We scuttled out, tails between our legs and found a shady spot at a table on the grass part of the garden (This is where dogs are allowed). Having settled ourselves here one of our party went to inform them that we had a table booked, out of curtesy. The allocated table was on the patio (but dogs are not allowed on the patio) Then we were told that the dog could sit with us on the patio as long as she stayed on the grass side. We opted to stay where we were!The menu is varied and looked good but the food was average. The pork was rather tasteless, the roast potatoes were hard, as if they had been cooked several times. The vegatables were overcooked, although the cauliflower cheese was delicious. On the positive side the plates were piping hot, so at least the food was still hot by the time it had completed its journey from the kitchen to the top of the garden.The best part of lunch was the friendly and helpful waitresses. The owner could learn a lot about customer service from them.Bearing in mind it was a busy Bank holiday Sunday lunch time, the provision of one member of bar staff to serve drinks was appalling. The queue for drinks was so long that people were getting agressive with each other, arguing who was first. One of our party was in the queue for drinks for so long that another member of our party had to go and relieve her so she could eat.Not an experience I would want to repeat in a hurry.

Our 13, 11 and 9 year old had already sat down nicely before we were told by the bar lady they weren't allowed inside. A pub in a seaside town that accepts dogs (one was barking loudly as we arrived) but not well behaved children inside to eat!? We were made to feel very welcome spending our money elsewhere rather than sitting outside in the cold at The Swan Inn. Wouldn't now return as a couple or with friends. Signs not obvious. Rules out of touch with today's norms. Such a shame as Sidmouth is lovely and the other pubs welcoming. Get with the times The Swan Inn! Discrimination at it's worst. What next? "Dementia tolerant?, "Autism tolerant"? Or maybe "Disabled tolerant"?Thank you for your comments, as it will be helpful to first time visitors unaware of our policy. Children are welcome at The Swan Inn, but the bar area is reserved for adults and over 14s only. I am sorry for your embarrassment you may have felt for not researching us on trip advisor, our website, google and for not reading the sign stating "No Under 14s in the bar area" written on the front door.

Great pub food, good choices well presented and cooked. Can recommend the fish & chips with mushy peas. Waitress staff was excellent, bar staff not quite so on-the-ball. Ice cream parlour on the front and outside seating if the weather is nice. Had a good evening out here.

This is an excellent place to eat. It is located a fair way from the centre of Sidmouth but well worth a visit. We went there twice during our stay and had the carvery both times. It was great. Good choice of tender and well cooked meats with all the trimmings you would want. The menu has a good variety of other things and a good selection of ales. Staff are very friendly and helpful.Lovely review and thank you so much for taking the time to give your opinion. Thank you also for your encouraging comments with regard to our staff they really do appreciate this valuable feedback.With regard to The Bowd Inn famous farmhouse carvery I feel this really does speak for itself but do please try the menu and specials board I believe you will also appreciate the quality here. Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you again when you are again in this glorious part of the country.

Visited on a Saturday night in October for a social evening meal with 19 friends in the private room upstairs. Then on the Sunday morning held a club AGM with a buffet lunch for 30. On the Monday night dined here again with friends from Sidmouth. Everything well handled by staff who have the right attitude about service and with a smile. Food really good on all three occasions and super value for money especially catch of the day and the fish & chips. As we are regular visitors to Sidmouth we always have a meal here at least once. Well done and thanks to Jo for giving us a good night.
