Unique gastropub in Kendal the heart of South Lakes. Amazing food, great atmosphere and fantastic service. Quality ales, artisan gins and craft beer. Log fires, historic setting at Kendal's oldest Inn. Perfect for groups, families, friends and solo travel
I came in today (Sunday 6th October 2019) and what a lovely experience I had for being a single person the young gentleman behind the bar whoâs name I asked was Chris was Very pleasant and friendly made me feel quite at ease as I was on my own for at least half an hour before my friends turned up as I got the time wrong for meeting I will definitely be visiting again

Stopped into this pub during a coupleâs trip to the Lakes as part of minimoon. Not sure what some people are expecting - but for me, this was a great little place. We had chicken curry and scampi and chips - both delicious. The curry was wholesome with nice chunks of chicken, veg, chilli and rice with crunchy popadoms and the scampi was tasty with no grease and a great portion. Staff were friendly and food was served quickly and piping hot. Would recommend.

We were on holiday in Cumbria, out and about on a Sunday, in and near Kendal and specifically looking for a pub lunch that had a carvery. And purely by luck found Romneys in an online search engine. We were a party of four and arrived by car at the peak of lunch time but there was still space in the car park which was a big bonus. Inside was bustling with people and a really nice atmosphere. We were so warmly welcomed and a table was found for us right away. Space was a bit tight, but the delicious scent of Sunday roast was far ahead of any consideration of space. The pub was very traditional looking in terms of decor and felt comfortable and friendly. The carvery was great! So much tastier than any we use at home and such generous amounts heaped on our plates of the various meats on offer. And when any item was depleted it was replaced as fast as possible.Staff were working flat out but retained smiles, good humour and offering really great service. On a non-food topic, the toilets were also spotlessly clean and a pleasure to use. There was nothing I didn't love about Romneys and I highly recommend it. If I had my way I'd send staff from some of the carvery-style buffets down south there, to see how to do one really, really well. Thanks to everyone for a warm welcome and delicious food.Thank you for your lovely review

I tried to book this hotel/pub for the previous night but it was full. My daughter and partner were booked in for two nights and I wanted to join them so booked a local b&b for one night but decided to stay another night, and now a room was available. I would normally stay in remote village pubs in the central or northern fells so the south Lakes near the fleshpots of Windermere was not what I would have chosen. When I first walked in just after lunch service I declared it my âvision of south Lakeland corporate tourist hell!â It was full of diners, smelled of food and was very busy. I was wrong and glad to admit it. I went back a while later to find delightful staff, a fabulous selection of doggy-themed beers brewed on the premises, and a comfortable lounge with a wood stove. I booked for the next night and the staff joined in my ruse to keep it a secret from my daughter. My allocated room was up two flights in the attic but that is good for my spaniel and my daughter was in the only other room on that landing so there were no outside movements to upscuttle the dog. The room was relatively small with a double and a single bed, but a good rate for a family room with a dog in a busy tourist area. The room is very modern but quirky. The bathroom is small but modern, the room was spotless. A very comfy double bed with plenty of storage. The telly was a reasonable size and had an adjustable mounting. However, I cracked my head five times on the beam on the side of the room as did my daughter, and her partner in theirs! I still have the lump days later. On first lifting the loo seat it came off in my hand and I had to fix it. On checkout when I reported it the staff discussed it and she saidâ oh yes, itâs always breaking! â Well fix it then! The double glazing doesnât quite keep out the noise of the busy trunk road but that wouldnât bother guests from urban areas. It did me a bit. The pub is large with viewing windows to the brewery. There are stoves in both main bars but we had to ask for the one in the bar we were eating in to be lit because it was cold, supported by other guests. The answer was it smoked a lot when first lit. Then light it earlier then! There is adequate WiFi throughout. There is a good âpub grubâ menu served quickly and with a smile, as is the beer. The food was, erm, pub grub. It is extremely dog friendly with the bar server giving treats to the dogs and there is a very quiet lane nearby to walk them. The location wouldnât be to my choice; itâs just off a busy trunk road but only a couple of miles from Windermere, and there are bus services if one wanted to use that to get back from the fleshpots in an evening. Itâs ideally situated for the south lakes and all its mass tourism fleshpots, but for me it was only 15 minutes to Ambleside and more importantly only 25 minutes to the real Valhalla of Great Langdale. My daughter, who has worked in the luxury hotel industry for 20 years, (now as a senior manager) declared herself delighted with this venue and that is praise indeed. I enjoyed my stay although the location and style wouldnât be to my usual taste. The staff deserve particular praise as does the beer. Give it a try. Dear Sir, I remember you staying with us and recall your kind comments at the time of your visit. Many thanks for also following up on this with your great review. I'm pleased you quickly changed your opinion of our Inn, we try our hardest to appeal to a broad range of clientele and we feel we have many unique selling points which make us stand out from your average Lake District tourist trap. I've fed your comments back to the staff and the owners about the service you received, and our brewer is thrilled you enjoyed the beer. We're pleased to read that your daughter and partner enjoyed their stay and we all hope to welcome yourself and them back in the future.

Called into The Beer Hall after a walk in the area. Was lucky enough to visit on a Sunday teatime when Fiona (Music in the Lakes) was leading the music session. It was packed but we managed to find some seats and enjoyed 2 hours of fantastic music from local artists, great food and an incredibly friendly atmosphere. It really was very inclusive from a little girl who sang a lovely song from Frozen to Fiona herself who was wonderful. We only popped in for a quick drink but stayed until the end. Fantastic!

A small, relaxed, informal European style cafe bar. Serves a fabulous selection of Gins, Cocktails, Platters with continental meats and cheeses and vegetarian specialties, Bombay Street food, locally roasted fine coffee and incredible cakes.
Have visited Slate a few times and staff are helpful and friendly. We have been able to reserve seats on occasions. Friday nights are good for the free nibbles. Unfortunately the toilets let the place down and have mentioned this to the staff. But overall a good bar to visit when in town.

Cafe-Bar in the heart of Kendal, serving locally sourced home made food - famed for our pulled pork & homemade BBQ sauce, slow cooked beef chilli, soups & breads, home roasted meats, and of course Karen's famous cakes.
This is a really enticing looking cafe in Kendal town center. The local market was on and we decided to call in for drinks and cake for a break. Karen's chocolate & beetroot cake was one of the nicest we have ever had, absolutely delicious and so moist.Good coffee (latte) and, what I assumed was the owner, was a very welcoming and friendly chap.

The Black Labrador is a traditional country pub serving home cooked food with all ingredients being locally sourced along with local real ales.
We booked a table for a Sunday afternoon and were initially seated on a very small table so asked to move as we were planning to share starters. The starters we chose were really good, especially the mezze platter with guacamole, hummus and feta salad - but please serve an adequate amount of pitta bread for the volume of the dips! The haloumi sticks were delicious with the cheese still soft - just lovely. Three of us had the Sunday roast - pork for me and beef for two - this is probably where we went wrong as nothing was particularly hot, and the beef was overcooked - it was 6pm so maybe that was the issue as my husband chose a steak with peppercorn sauce off the main menu and his dish was very good. Service was good and we sat in a nice, light dining room. I would eat here again but unless I came actually at lunchtime on a Sunday would eat from the main menu.
