Reviews on Asian food in Oxford, England, United Kingdom. In the "city of dreaming spires," academia takes center stage. Gaze out at Oxford's world-famous university from the top of Carfax Tower before heading into the city's pedestrian-friendly streets. Follow your nose to the Covered Market for the makings of a picnic to enjoy at Headington Hill Park. Mix the historic and modern with visits to the 12th-century village church of Iffley and trendy Cowley's ethnic shops and music venues.

Edamame

If you desire tasty home-cooked style Japanese food served in a cozy setting then look no further than Edamame ! For the last 3 years (2017/18/19) Edamame has been endorsed by the Japanese government as Oxford’s ONLY truly authentic Japanese restaurant. W

Edamame can be great, providing you abide by the rules. The opening hours are very short - it is never open later than 8.30pm, on Sundays it is just 12 - 3.30 and it isn't open at all on Mondays and Tuesdays. The restaurant is small and narrow and does not have more than about six tables. As a consequence, it does not take bookings and there is frequently a queue of people huddled in the very narrow doorway and sometimes stretching out into Holywell Street outside. If you do see this you are out of luck and should probably repair to the Turf Tavern over the road for a bit. Be prepared to be seated on a table with people you don't know and to be shifted part-way through your meal to another table if a party come in and want to sit together and if you are in a large group of people then chances are you will be asked to split and occupy different tables. The fact that the restaurant is small and the tables are close together means that it can get loud and echo-y and we learned more about one of our neighbouring diner's jobs than we ever wanted to (to be fair, she was a bit of a latter-day Stentor and her friends didn't get a word in).On the plus side, the waiters are friendly and the service is quick - it kind of has to be! The same couple (English husband, Japanese wife) have run the place for 21+ years. The stir fried strips of pork loin marinated in soy and ginger is fantastic, as is the wakame seaweed and chopped cucumber. Drinks are not limited to Japanese fare - while my wife had Asahi, I opted for the German Köstritzer Black Lager which is superb. Now we know the drill we are curious to try the Thursday only sushi menu.Thank you for posting your review about your visit to Edamame. You are correct to point out that our opening hours are unconventional. Our system of menu rotation is unusual, and the restaurant itself is undeniably small and narrow. We truly hope that our guests are able to enjoy their meals here without feeling the need to “abide by a set of rules”, so may I respectfully suggest it might be better to state that guests should be open to a new kind of dining experience.....? There are no rules, it’s all just rather different. It is certainly a delicate challenge for us to try to minimise the wait for guests queueing at the door whilst maintaining swift, friendly and courteous service to our guests sat inside. Occasionally we might ask (always very politely) guests who are already sat to move to a different spot to help improve the seating efficiency. We rarely if ever ask to move guests who are part way through their meal. Although such a request might be unusual at other restaurants at Edamame it forms more of a “mutual back-scratching” exercise which can often result in an improved situation for the “moved” guest. After consulting with my staff it appears that you were asked to move from one of our large tables where you had been subjected to the “latter-day Stentor” and were offered one of our small tables to have to yourselves, where you were able to sit with your wife far more comfortably than before and undisturbed by unknown co-diners. Sadly for us the bulk of your review is negative, but we are very happy to read that you enjoyed some of the food at least and your beers !We hope you will give us another try. You mention you are curious to try our Thursday evening sushi night. We will certainly do our very best to make your next visit a more positive experience, and we hope to see you here again one day soon. With best wishes from us all at Edamame

Was attracted by the good reviews so turned up on spec. Got a table quite fast, liked the layout and it was happy hour 2 for 1. Cocktails tasted like they had shared the alcohol from 1 into 2 glasses....rubbish. food was ok bit disnt blow us away and for just under £100 for two, with a bottle of wine, thought it was pricey given the quality. Service was very attentive and fast. I wouldnt bother going again though.

Was in Oxford for business and looked up this restaurant on Trip Advisor! This is situated near a large car park which is fortunate because parking on the street is horrendous. The car park is pay and display so be warned. The restaurant itself is welcoming and serves very good food. The duck starter is VERY spicy- as it claims on the menu. The naga chilli dishes are also very hot - as it states on the menu. The staff are very helpful and have a relaxed and welcoming manner. Food not overpriced and all in all a lovely tasty meal. Definitely go again if I’m back in Oxford. A hidden jewel.

Great little bolt hole of a restaurant with lovely albeit very heavy food. Lots of it is fried and clearly has lots of sugar but the flavours are still delicate and well executed. The bar-man cum waiter is rude enough for it to be off-putting and some basic manners and patience wouldn’t go amiss. Pause over your choice and he hoiks his bosom and flounces away. It’s truly a bit bizarre and noticeably odd. Shame really as it detracts from the food. He’s just a bit agitated to the point where the table behind us was chatting about it as well. Sort that and it’s perfect.

Chunks of potato in sauce with meat was very tasty. Booked ahead as was very busy on a Friday night.
